Death is no dream, For in death I'm caressing you With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you Gloomy Sunday Dreaming I was only dreaming I wake and I find you Asleep in the deep of My heart Dear Darling I hope that my dream never haunted you My heart is telling you how much I wanted you * Gloomy Sunday
Sunday is Gloomy, My hours are slumberless, Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless Little white flowers will never awaken you Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you Angels have no thought of ever returning you Would they be angry if I thought of joining you Gloomy Sunday Sunday is gloomy with shadows I spend it all My heart and I have decided to end it all Soon there'll be flowers and prayers that are sad, I know, let them not weep, Let them know that I'm glad to go
In memory of my father who committed suicide June 15, 2010...I miss you so much and there's so much I had wanted to tell you and some things I wish I hadn't said--forgive me and give me some sign ... You'll stay in my heart and soul until we meet again...
@EmmaRose473 I am so very sorry. I hope that there were good memories though as well. I never knew my father properly due to the fact he was always drunk. He didn't kill himself but died a few years back and it hurt the things that were spoken to. As to see your father in your dreams and see if he returns because mine did. He told me it was ok and that he knew he would go and was proud of me. It was more closure and kinder than he had ever been in life.
@blackadder84 Thank you very much for sharing your experiences and your kind words to me...It's never 'easy' when it comes to matters like these...I did have so many good memories with my dad--maybe that's why it was and IS such a shock that he chose to do what he did--something I never thought he would ever do--but then again, that's the problem with 'never'...God Bless and good Karma to you...
Sarah MacLachlan has better range, especially in the higher registers. I'm still partial to the raw power of the original, but of all the versions I've heard, this is a solid second in my opinion.
As to hearing it in different languages, a group called Transsylvanians has a trilingual version, in Hungarian, English and German. You might try looking up "Szomoru Vasarnap" to find the original.
maybe wen i hear dis song as of now in english version, it would'nt sound depressing and even to hungarian version bcoz i dont understand d hungarian language
but, maybe it wil do if i.

I love this song so much. I love depressing songs. Except I hate that I used to be depressed, and now everyone says I always look depressed. I love this song.
~You gave me a flower as a symbol of our love, but flowers die, so I guess our love isn't that strong.~ Misti
The original composer was depressed because he couldn't come up with another hit after Gloomy Sunday. He didn't commit suicide right after the song was composed in 1933 but he killed himself 35 years later when he jumped from his building in Budapest. I like this version - like the cool pictures!! I also Diamanda Galas' version a little bit more. But Billie Holiday's is my favorite!
the very reason for which it ha been forbidden is the war : it could destroy the moral of the soldiers! anyway i hope you enjoy billie but this one is very good too in another style
This is a superb rendition of a song that isn't easy to do convincingly. Very beautiful, but easy to see how it might push certain types of susceptible people "over the edge." Seress must have been one intense and musical individual to have come up with it.
Hungarians make fine musicians...speaking as a violinist with some Hungarian ancestors of my own ;-)
dont be foolish. the song along isnt gonna make you suicidal. those who killed themselves listening to this song, were currently experiencing something quite sad in their lives, and the song is the thing that pushes them over the edge. to them, its a message, and sucks them of any remaining will to live.
im tired of seeing comments from people stating that they "survived the suicide song" no shit sherlock.
just dont listen to it after you find your lover dead in your bedroom. get the picture?
This is the Sarah McLachlan version. It is a very deeply emotional song, but the stories of mass suicides caused by it are urban legend, and likely partly started to promote earlier versions of the song.
beautiful and appropriate clips for such a heart-wretching song...I like the version from 'the man who cried' soundtrack...BUT this one is probably just as good and the video is amazing...goes perfectly...
I've always hated Sundays...and I am told I was born on a Sunday...maybe that's why I hate them...
WHY does everyone think this is Sarah McLachlan????? It's Loreena McKennitt. I have the album. I can PROVE it. And for all hose who think this is the most depressing song ever: You've not heard depressing until you've actually heard Gloomy Sunday. This is not the original version that was banned. This is not the version people killed themselves over. The original starts out with "It is Autumn, and the leaves are falling." You all have computers. Google it.
This version is definitely by Sarah McLachlan. It was a live performance and was released on her CD "Rarities, B-Sides, & Other Stuff" about 12 years ago. I have this CD.
true! and the original song is in hungarian . but the one that composed it eas a pianist , singing it only at piano(raszo serres) in 1930 or something. but i like the version from the movie :) in german :D it is absolutely gorgeous. but this posted here doesn't even resemble to the original , it;s tottaly different! :-<

Another masterpiece ruined by the media. I can't stand the 'dreaming' part. The singer does an amazing job... I really wish it didn't have to be changed. Okay, the first half of the song is great, but in the original, as in the way it went brfore Billie Holiday changed it, there is none of this "I was only dreaming" crap. Why can't people leave a perfectly good song about despair and suicide as-is? What the hell are you afraid of, Sarah? Jesus. Grow a pair. If any of you would like to hear the way the song really ends, check out Diamanda Galas's version.
oh yeah, iv been listening to this song since my friend emily introduced this to me..i think its a great piece of music..a bit sad...but not necessarily suicidal..
Just to let everyone know, (people are saying the end isn't good) the last verse was not written by the original composer, Billie Holiday write it for that version, to brighten the mood.

Just to let everyone know, (people are saying the end isn't good) the last verse was not written by the original composer, Billie Holiday write it for that version, to brighten the mood.

billie holiday didn't write any of it

When she remade her own version she wrote the last verse, atleast that's what about 4 sources say.
