  • genius

  • Just watched some of his groove workshop. I had to turn it off after he said that if there was no space in music and sound then there would no longer be the world, there would be only one...

His genius makes my head hurt as it expands.

  • when heard unaccompanied like this. I do not mean this as any dissrespect to victor himself, he is clearly one of the best bassists in the world its just that when you compare the sound he gets out of his instrument to the sound from other top level guys on other instruments this just sounds terrible to anyone who is not a bassist. Bass is not really an instrument designed to be right at the front taking center stage like this. It should settle almost unnoticeably in the background(to my ears)

  • @ChrissyChiChi thats bullshit,a bass is an instrument that can be in the main focus, you just seen a viideo of it so why the hell are you saying that a bass cant be at the front ,its just stupid to say that, your one of thoose guys who listens to bands just for guitar solos , and this sounds absolutely great you have no sence for music ,you probably dont even know the name of the technic hes playing ,just stop posting stupid comments

  • @Rammstein7012 Read all my comments before jumping to personal insults, I said that FOR ME the bass should not be the main focus in a song BECAUSE of this song here, this song is an example of the point I was making. To me bass on its own has just got a very very ugly tone. Victor is obviously an outstanding player, one of the best bassists I have heard and yet even with all his talent to me he still cant get the bass to sound pleasant on its own.

And I dont just listen to guitar solos, what

  • @Rammstein7012 gave you that impression? There really is no need to get your knickers in such a twist over someone giving their opinion on youtube...take deep breaths...calm down and try to accept that throughout life you are going to encounter people who disagree with you.

As to what technique he is using presumably its slapping and popping? Not that it makes any difference to the point I made, I dont play bass because(as mentioned before) I think its an ugly sounding instrument on its own.

  • @ChrissyChiChi bass sounds ugly ??? give me one point for that and i accept your opinion, and i play bass and i can play this song ( no kidding) ,and whatever makes you think bass shouldnt be in the focus, thats nonsence too, or do you like thoose bands with shitty bassists, drummers and great guitarists that play one shitty solo and then another one ? thats lame

  • @Rammstein7012 if you are a guy, bass sounds bad (i'm a bassplayer) but it's so sexy, if you are chick you have to fuck a guy with a bass (especially since as a phallic symbol, it looks like you are playing with the worlds biggest dick)

Look at the facts, what make a girl shake her ass is funk, hip-hop, jazz, all bass influenced instruments.

Do girls shake their ass when listening to metal? Even rock without a bass?

    No. Sorry, they don't.

  • I exaggerate, bass does have a very beautiful sound, it's just harmonically it is limited by being rather low-pitched and only have 4 strings (traditionally).

But as for ChrissyChiChi and Romans10Verse9, bass is the groove section. A good drummer will tell the bass player how to pawn, and a good bass player with a good drummer will pawn.

  • @maxdafield well you seem to have more sence of music than this chrissychichi guy,i must say bass is limited in the higher tones, but there are more techniques to make it sound cool and grooving than on guitar,i dont want to say that guitar sounds bad or anything but i think that too many poeple underrate the possibilities of bassplaying, they just have no idea of music like chrissychichi in my opinion

  • @Rammstein7012 How exactly do you give a point about something sounding ugly? It either does or it does'nt, its that simple. I would say a big part of it is probably its lack of range when compared to other instruments, you are pretty much stuck playing in very low frequencies which are just not that pleasant to the human ear. Sure you can play on the higher strings and go further up the neck but the tension and thickness of the strings ends up giving notes up there a pretty sickening 'twang'

  • @Rammstein7012 you are also very limited with regards to chord usage, sure you CAN do chords on a bass but with no where near the same freedom as many other instruments and again presumably because of the tension and thickness of the strings chords stand out a mile with a really nasty thud. It sounds odd but its a pretty common observation, the bass quite often sounds unfortunately similar to someone farting..not the most pleasant of noises. Bass also misses out because unlike other stringed

  • @Rammstein7012 instruments its not really possible to have very fluid vibrato (yet again due to the thickness of the strings), you just dont have that control on a bass which is normally one of the most beautiful aspects of stringed instruments, even if you could pull of a solid vibrato due to the frequency of the instrument it would be nigh on impossible to hear anyhow so it would be pointless.

I dont know if there are buskers where you live but in my city (london) they are all over the place

  • @Rammstein7012 I have never seen a bass player busking, I have seen keyboards, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, saxaphones, trumpets, even a harp but never a bassist and its easy to understand why, a bass on its own is just not a pleasant sound to people who are not bassists, no one would give them money if they tried busking. It is still a very necessary instrument dont get me wrong, it adds that extra low frequency which gives bands a bit more balls but that is when its used as with 99% of

  • @Rammstein7012 all songs containing bass, very far in the background.

I just had a quick look through your favourites in your account and saw it was mostly six feet under, amon amarth and equilibrium, with all of those bands if you heard their songs without bass you would notice it lacked a punch for sure but the songs would still be easily recognisable and you would still have all the main riffs and themes of their songs which make them stand out. Take away another instrument however like

  • @Rammstein7012 the electric guitar or something, leaving just bass and drums on the instrumental side then there would be a HUGE difference, you would loose pretty much all the riffs and the songs would be ruined. In most rock/metal bands a good drummer and good guitarists make much much muuuch more of a difference than a good bassist, good guitarists and drummers more than make up for a dodgy bassist in a way that a great bassist cannot make up for a dodgy guitarist and drummer.

  • @Rammstein7012 As a final point I would say maybe compare a bass virtuoso like Victor Wooten (who's skill and talent I do not deny for a second) to a virtuoso from another instrument like the electric guitar, so compare a piece like this to anything by Shawn Lane..its just a whole other league, there is so much more variety and feel and so many more ideas avaliable to someone like shawn, its not because Wooten is not incredibly talented, I just feel that he is held back by his chosen instrument.

  • @Rammstein7012 essentially if he wanted to do lead work its a shame he chose an instrument far more designed for just sitting in the background rather than one which can handle both with ease.

As to you saying you can play this song (not that it has any bearing on this discussion at all) but people over the internet big up their skills all the time, especially those without any material on offer so whilst it may be true that you can unless I see you play it I dont believe you, sorry.

  • @ChrissyChiChi so you did your homework watching my channel, did you recognize that i have only about 9 favs,i just started out adding i will add some cannibal corpse wich would sound like shit without alex webster, and how the hell can you compare virtuoso of diffrent instruments, thaats pointless, you should just think over your opinion of music ,in the instrumental way, i dont want to discuss with you because we wont get on the same side of the view so , i dont need a big argument bout this ok ?

  • @Rammstein7012 Again with the personal insults saying I have no sense of music...I explained my thoughts very clearly in my comments and have not insulted you once, maybe just accept that some people have different opinions to you, it does not necessarily make them terrible people.

I thought it was obvious why I would compare virtuos's of different instruments, I my entire original comment which started this was saying that I thought victors talent was wasted on a limited and (to me) ugly

  • @Rammstein7012 sounding instrument like a bass, thus I referenced a virtuoso from a different instrument with a better range so you could compare and see how limited Victor is by his instrument NOT by his talent.

You said there are more techniques avaliable on a bass than on a guitar, I disagree, practically every technique you can do on a bass can also be done on a guitar but because a guitar has a more pleasant range and larger tonal variety I think many of them end up sounding significantly

  • @Rammstein7012 more pleasant on a standard guitar. Check out some of these videos for some cool grooving techniques that to my ear anyhow just sound soo much nicer on a guitar.

    /watch?v=iz9XVnF1BsQ&feature=related

    /watch?v=lIb2mXKKzi8&feature=related

    /watch?v=NsYfLjsHBDE

    /watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4&feature=related

Try and listen to those with an unbias ear if possible.

Whilst cannibal corpse would of course not sound as good with just guitars and drums but no bass I think they would sound far faaaaar

  • @Rammstein7012 worse with just bass and drums but no guitars, again restating my earlier point, bass works really nicely in the background adding that extra kick to the sound of a band (in rock and metal) but when its the lead instrument and main focus to me it just sounds hideous, its not an instrument designed for lead playing and I think that really shows.

I have at least explained my views carefully here whether you agree with them or not, yet all you have done is throw out personal insults

  • @ChrissyChiChi o absolutely dont care what you think of my ´´insults´´ i never insulted you ,i said that you ned to think over your point of view and that its pointless comparing two diffrent instrument,by the way :have you ever seen someone slappung a guitar ??? thats what i mean, but as i said i absolutely dont need a big discussion about this because we will never get along with our opinions ,just leave me and i leave you understood ? just listen to the music you like and so will i ,peace ?

  • @Rammstein7012 Of course I have, its not that rare, if you actually looked at the videos I linked you to in my comments then you would have seen videos of several people using the slapping technique on a guitar, so that would be a yes then.Watch the links if you are interested.

As to you claiming never to have insulted me that too is nonsense, you said I

have 'no idea of music' (more than once) and that i like listening to one shitty guitar solo after another amoungst other baseless sillyness.

  • @ChrissyChiChi you seem to ignore that i told you that i dont need an argument about this, because we have two diffrent opinions that will never get along so just stop waisting time wich you could spend on watching videos you like alrigth ? i wont answer any more comments

  • @Rammstein7012 Sure but you asked me a question in your last comment and threw an accusation my way...why ask if I have ever seen someone using the slapping technique on a guitar if you did not want a response? I presume you asked it to try and make a point as you assumed I had not, of course yet again though I proved you wrong so instead you got angry..you are amusingly predictable...and watching you put your foot in your mouth again and again is amusing.

  • @ChrissyChiChi look at Victor Wooten Amazing Grace Live at the quick and tell me that bass alone sounds like shit.

  • @ChrissyChiChi Actually it is tapping slapping and popping and using dead notes

  • He is obviously a fantastic musician with great technical ability but im afraid im going to have to say it seems as though its wasted on a bass guitar... To my ears the sound of bass on its own like this is very ugly and just plain flat, it sounds pretty horrific when it attempts to do lead work too..Even though its undoubtably very impressive to play at the speed he does it just sounds abysmal. There is a good reason for why bass tends to be lowest in volume on cd's, its tone is just too ugly

  • @ChrissyChiChi bass isn't low on volume incase you didn't know its the frequency for most they tune it intune to the guitar so its not obivous. But when you normaly play its much lower then the guitar so its more obivous, if you played in a band you would know.

  • @ass95ass ...obviously bass is lower in frequency, I would have thought that does not need to be pointed out? They are also usually much lower in volume in comparison to the other instruments too.

I have played in bands before but you dont need to have played in a band to know that a bass is at a lower frequency than a standard guitar, the clue is in the name.

  • @ChrissyChiChi in a band you make it softer but in a studio they tune it to the same frequency so its not obivous but its really a very loud instrument that doesnt need to be in the back of the band if its so why do people need such big amps for bass guitars as well its just that in most songs it just sounds nicer

  • @ass95ass ....I dont think you have understood anything I have written...reread my comments caaaaarefully.

Listen to studio produced albums by just about any band, the bass is almost always way way waaaaay down in the mix and barely audiable, it works best as one of those instruments that you only notice when it is absent (hence old jokes like'there is something wrong with your bass, I can hear it') When it is the main part of a song as in the case here to me it just sounds very very ugly.

  • @ChrissyChiChi

In my opinion it really depends on the type of music. Funk, Hip Hop, R&B are good examples of music that works best with the bass up in the mix. It's an important register to occupy, especially if want people to groove to your tunes.

If you don't dig the sound of a bass in the front though, that's your choice. No biggie.

  • @Romans10Verse9 Yah that is true, I guess it does completely depend on the genre, im not much of a hip hop guy so it stands to reason.

Im not entirely sure why people so often talk of bass being what decides the groove in tunes, surely in the majority of cases that is what the drummer provides? Of course the bass can exaggerate it by slotting in but surely so can any other instrument?

  • @ChrissyChiChi

It's that frequency. Drums are crucial to the groove too, but a bass added in can amplify it so much. Keep in semind that we're talking about an instrument, NOT the players. A bad bassist won't increase the groove all that much, but a great bassist like Pino Palladino can change up the groove completely.

It's because the bass (in the right hands) takes up the lows in just the right ways and times. Most other instruments can't do that because they occupy higher registers.

  • i guess 5 people were high when they watched this

  • @MrRockDude777 no cuz if they were hi they would enjoy this. this is fucking amazing

  • @jpineda9391 dude that's exactly what i mean only someone who was high wouldnt enjoy this

  • @MrRockDude777 i'm high... this is still soooo awesome :)

  • @jpineda9391 i was about to type this

  • I can play this on my Bass Guitar... and then I woke up.

  • Isso não é um vídeo.

  • he should stick to instrumentals

  • Vic = Awesome sauce.

  • wow 4 dislikes wtf, who doesnt like this?

  • @unknownbassist67 Just the people that want it to be a video and when it isn't, they diss. *Shrugs*

  • so sick

  • Victor...undefeatable!

    thumbs up

  • jo cool

  • no way the lyrics are wat make the song!!!!! lol just kiddin =) catchy as hell 'JUST ME N MY BASS GUITAR!!!!!!!!'

  • just a little before 2:30, Holy Nuts!

  • @saisugoi its so hard to do that lad, its called a double thump :L i can do it, but it absoloutley hurts my thumb bad! Amazing song :)

  • @saisugoi It left me speechless...

  • hey i just thought about it this song reminds me of What it is (aka nina's song) by the red hot chili peppers if u like this search it up its kinda like this just bass and rap/vocals

  • @thtmusicloser

except victor wooten is ten thousand percent better than flea

  • @NapalmTOX well to by what victor says no body is "better" but i DEFINATLY see where your coming from, he like is technical bass god :P

  • Victor wooten is cool man. A mean i just discovered him yesterday, and i'm starting bass too so. Cool !

  • he shouldent sing but i bow to his bass skills

  • Lyrics are good! Probably a short version of his life. He and His bass guitar. He played at all the places if he had the chance

  • is he impersonating keith jarrett at the fade?

  • this song is sooo much fun to jam on (sans lyrics, of course ;D)

  • as silly as the lyrics are i still find myself singing them all the time lol amazing bass like all vics stuff :) one day im gonna get my bass signed by him

  • my first bass got his sig about ten years, i never play that thing anymore, its a POS but worth more than the rest cause of that sig

  • crazy good bass line but agreed stupid lyrics though catchy as

  • this song rocks, but its still alot better on the Live in America album

  • lol at 0:12!!! lmao i love that sound whatever the hell it is....

  • This song is a fantastic song! Really got me into bass lead music!

  • haha cheesiest lyrics ever but this is a BEAST bass song (of course). i was thinking earlier, "you know, wooten is like the vai of bass." and then i punched myself because you can't compare vic wooten to ANYONE. above and beyond for sure.

  • agreed...lyrics are painful but damn he can plaaaayyyyy

  • @stratifymecaptain Lyrics are great...and Vai wishes he was a good as Wooten.

  • @stratifymecaptain STEVE VAI and VICTOR WOOTEN are at another class of their on (on their respective instruments). Marcus Miller is still my favorite bassist though.

  • @stratifymecaptain have you even heard of Flea?

  • @theguywholovesyou2 Flea sux compared to wooten, he doesn't even deserve to be compared with him...

  • @HaggzoDehPwnzor well obviously you haven't heard his older stuff. cause if you have you'd know he is clearly equivalent to mr. wooten here...

  • Comment removed

  • @theguywholovesyou2 Well even though i love flea, i have to dissagre. Vic is hugely superior to nearly any other bassist technique wise and in groove. Fleas older stuff (while being very funky) isnt diffcult in the slightest and, while sounding great, sounds very empty just by itself. In comparison a single bassline by Vic holds an entire song up just by its self. The only one i would say who is close to Victor, or even equal, is Gustavo Dal Farra. Look him up and prepare to get your mind blown.

  • @stratifymecaptain its like really old school rap

  • @stratifymecaptain Steve Vai wishes he was the Vic Wooten of guitar.

  • @stratifymecaptain did it hurt?

  • @melak6 When Victor wooten fell from heaven? lol hahaha
