look, I think to download a transformation of Lunix Ubuntu 10, so i have so importatn files in my pc. If i install that transformatio would my file delete or thay stay in my pc?
@hyper1077 I'm not sure I understand entirely, but I'll see if i can help.
If you're running Ubuntu, and you upgrade to a newer version, it should keep all of your files intact. If you're switching over to Linux from a different operating system, like Windows, you would have to back up all of your files when you do, because you'd be removing Windows.
If you are dual booting (running Windows and Linux on the same machine) you could leave your Windows files there and install Ubuntu beside it.
@TheAngelsDecay newer software, bug fixes, quite a few things. I've made several videos about 10.10 if you'd like to check them out to see what's new about it.
@rts100x5 I've been there, and I've given support there. Ubuntu Forums is a great example of what you can expect with Linux. Community. Support. Friendship. how to download files which are like save as target ones but linux dont have any browser that does it ive gotta download some mp3s but it dont give me option to save as target plzz help
Well till the 9.10 Ubuntu had a very successful OS production. But now... For example now i'm using the 10.04 and i hope that will finish writing this reply.Lol. I think that something is going on with the latest updates of firefox (Ubuntu).(Statistically i believe that this is one of the main crashes. If you ask me which is the BEST linux distro i've ever used(i haven't used so many)..but Fedora, PC-BSD and Solaris. I believe that are the most qualitative OSs. And i would say that Solaris is..
@gpanos85 I'll admit, I haven't used default Ubuntu 10.04 in a while, but my laptop is Mint 9, which is basically Ubuntu 10.04 plus a bunch of stuff, and firefox hasn't crashed on me once (running firefox 3.6.10 right now). I agree though that Fedora is a very nice distro, and is very stable.
I'll admit, I don't have much experience with PC-BSD or Solaris, because they're not Linux-based. :P
@gpanos85 well, technically just about anything can crash, no matter how stable it claims to be. In my experience, there were some issues with 10.04, but I never had a single system-wide crash.
@erick161616 What sort of wireless card do you have? You might try going to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers and see if it detects what you've got. That usually only works for Broadcom cards.
hi, i installed ubuntu 10.04 a couple of weeks ago in my laptop. one thing i noticed is that the battery drains faster than it did with windows 7. do you know of anything i can do to improve the battery life while i'm using ubuntu 10.04, like any tweak on the setting perhaps? i am new to ubuntu but i am liking it so far. (i have already dimmed the screen to the minimum but it's still the same result with the battery). thanks
@angusnyt1 you haven't disabled ACPI or AHCI or anything, have you? I know some laptops still require that to boot properly, and that disables all power management.
What sort of laptop is it? There might be utilities out there to help.
@thisweekinlinux thanks for the reply. i checked the set up and it says that AHCI is enabled. should i disable it or keep it that way? i installed ubuntu in my msi cr400 laptop. power-saving modes work fine in windows 7 installed in the same laptop comp.
@angusnyt1 I'd say leave it enabled, if it's working already. Sadly, power management is one of the things that isn't great on Linux yet. it's getting better. I did a quick search but didn't find anything related to power for the cr400. I'll keep searching.
@thisweekinlinux thanks a lot. i think i can live with this for now. but i'll also look for other solutions to my problem. i hope to find one because i want to keep ubuntu on my computer. it's great! :)

@hustla404 in theory I think it's possible using remastersys. you'd have to install that, run it (it's got a GUI), then take the .iso file it creates, copy it to your Windows machine and burn a copy (or burn it from your Virtual Machine if you can). then you should be able to use that to install on your physical machine.
hey thisweekinlinux, I tried 9.04 or w/e few months back on my AMD 6000+ with an ATI 4870 and it ran like shit. Now im guess there is something wrong (most likely my fault). I downloaded the 64bit amd version so i had the right one.
1. why would it run slow and crappy (worse then win 95?)
2. after updating graphics drivers, it got even worse!
3. any websites for noobs?
p.s. i wan't to game on linux too, but only if i can get it to be faster then my awesome XP (sorry but i love xp :/ )
@bastec666 I'm sorry to say it, but the fault lies with that ATI 4870. ATI's drivers for Linux are, well, not great. The open source drivers (the ones the community has created) are getting better, but are still a long way off from being "stable". I used them for a long time, but ended up just buying an Nvidia card instead.

@xpawnrip It's just something I was trying out. Honestly, I don't think I like it either. I'll go back to the old banner and see if I can come up with something better.

A question about the Thursday's live show, I would like to tell us the GMT time and day, because I'm confused about the live show time, I live in the GMT+2 time zone.
@hrbear I'll try to remember to do that from now on. There's actually a countdown timer on the thisweekinlinux site in the upper right hand corner, and a google calendar associated with it (if you click the timer, it goes to the Gcal).
@Dantei136 Ubuntu should work just fine with it, but if you know what model the chipset is specifically you can put that in google and add the word "ubuntu" to it to see if people have had problems with it.
@Dantei136 I just tested it here, and apparently Gwibber just won't do Facebook for the moment. I know I've had problems with it in the past. Looks like I had Facebook connected to Empathy for instant messaging, not status updates. Sorry about that.
i have a sort of bug in ubuntu. when I'm logged in i can't connect an external display like a projector because the OS gets stuck. i have to log out , connect the projector.
I have a hp pavilion dv2000. does anyone have the same problem ?
@thisweekinlinux some dv200 come with nvidia but mine is intel, that's why it seems wierd to me, anyway it's not biggie, i don't use it all the time and still like ubuntu n.n
You can easily run both Ubuntu and some form of WIndows as dual OS. I keep Windows XP because I like to play games like Call of Duty and others but use Ubuntu for everything else. Tried Win 7 Ultimate and it is a nightmare.
@thisweekinlinux I like your beard as well. I am jealous. -.- I want the one you have. BTW if Ubuntu could run Steam like WIndows does I´d immediately change to Ubuntu but it doesn´t -.-
It's possible to run Steam within Wine, but it's not perfect. There were rumors that Valve was going to bring Steam to Linux, but nothing substantiated, sadly.
@thisweekinlinux Yeah I already know that you can run Steam within Wine and that´s why I said LIKE on Windows. The problem is that the games are windowed as far as I know. Get over the edge of the window, do one click and it´s inactiv and you stop moving ingame... . Do you know what I´m talking about? I like Linux but there should at least be a Steamversion for Linux. Otherwise I´d change to Linux and get a good console. Cause upgrading my PC for any new game gets anyoing and expensive.
@thisweekinlinux What about framrate? Did you experience any loss or gain? My problem with Ubuntu was that I wasn´t able to get the correct driver for my Colorful GeForce GT220. On the website of the manufacturer there are no driver versions for Linux. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 I got a temporary NVideo driver or something. How about the lag? My problem is that I can´t find any linux drivers for my ethernet card and my sound card. And what about direct x 9, 10 and 11? These aren´t supported..
@PatriotGermanEmpire I will say, framerate definitely isn't as good as it could be. I have a Gt240, and it ran Left 4 dead 2 pretty well, and Half life 2, if I remember correctly. If you go to System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers (may be called Hardware Drivers in 10.04) you can get the majority of drivers you'll need. Sound/ethernet are generally there out of the box.
DirectX is installable through Wine (winetricks does this easily)
@thisweekinlinux I hope that there are at least some commercial games that run on Linux. I´m already thinking about a gaming console and a change to Linux Ubuntu. I´ve tried many Linux distributions and Ubuntu was the best of them.
@PatriotGermanEmpire there are some, but sadly, not many. There are quite a lot of indie games that are really impressive though. Depending on what you like, take a look at Amnesia: The Dark Descent (lots of videos about it here on YouTube), and World of Goo (puzzle game)
I'm really excited about this new distro! as soon as i found out about it, i made a live cd and tested it out a little. I'm gonna install it on my laptop as soon as i get it :D
I have used one of the previous versions of linux, exactly the 9.16 version, after a restart it deleted my graphics card driver on himself :S Where was the problem? Aye and after that the ubuntu removed somehow the kernel debugger and my computer was not able to run linux anymore, just when i installed it once again. My question: Where was the problem?
@janchokiss I'm not sure what the problem was without some more information. usually it doesn't remove anything without you telling it to somehow though.
the only thing is sad for me is the fact that i am playing Counter Strike SOurce for almost 2 years on Vista and im trying to find a way so i can play it on LInux...However the philosophy of Linux is amazing...Great free features...Cool themes...i mean LInux should be the first option for markets...Windows is just trying to make money from stupid upgrades as Vista and 7... :D
@thisweekinlinux You are lucky. How did you get this program? I want to get it if you want to help me make a transition I will send you my computer specs.
@Theyallfloatdownhere If you're interested in Ubuntu, just head to ubuntu. com and download the latest version. You can burn it to a CD or follow their directions to stick it on a USB drive, and have fun from there!
1. What sort of sound card do you have? you can type "lspci" in a terminal and look for something that says "audio" to find it.
2. UNetbootin just copies a liveCD to a usb drive, meaning no space is allocated to save settings. If you use the Ubuntu USB creator within Ubuntu (or almost any other ISO-to-USB creator), it can allocate space to save settings on reboot.
@ifarooqs there's a bug on launchpad about that family of sound cards, and they pointed the person with the problem here: help. ubuntu. com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS I think yesterday and lol it looks really nice. I love the new boot-up screen on 9.10. Hopefully the pulse audio bug has been fixed I'm too scared to check if it has been. Audio quality has been greatly improved since 9.10 though! For some reason WINE doesn't want to recognize any .exe files.
@thisweekinlinux It was a bug in 9.10 where if you changed say the sound balance or levels your subwoofer there would be bad quality audio and a high pitched noise. I'm not getting an error in terminal I get a popup saying that the file I'm trying to install is not marked as an executable.
@jimboinlimbo i totally agree with you. i format and reinstall every year so my hard drive doesn't get cluttered with old programs and drivers that i don't use any more... that's usually what happens that makes it run weird with me.
Hey thanks for the video! I just downloaded this version (ubuntu 10.04) and installed it on virtual PC. I'm currently new to linux but still use windows. And I am just wondering which is better fedora or ubuntu? I also have fedora but it's already outdated, version 9, 2008. So yeah I'm new to linux and like experimenting with it.
@kazzagazza2010 That's entirely a matter of preference. Ubuntu is wonderful for new users, and has a lot of great features that experienced users will love.
Fedora, on the other hand, is not terribly difficult to get running, and if you use a decent tutorial, you can have all the same codecs and drivers as you do on Ubuntu. I won't say it's as easy to get running as Ubuntu is, but once it's up, it's stable, fast, and easy to keep updated.
@MarcianitoRajoy In this video it doesn't show up, because it was a fresh install, but on my desktop all the Bookmarks I have created in Gnome show up in the main Places menu. Anything over 3-4 pop out to the right-hand side.
@ScreamOfSilence00 They're available from ThinkGeek! :) Check out my earlier video where I review the Plush Tux, there's a link in the description directly to it.
@Mafkeesdejong Check out my video titled "Ask TWIL: Why I Use Fedora & Creating a Video Intro" to see how I made my intro, and my video titled "Ask TWIL: How to Make a Screencast on Ubuntu / Linux" to find out how I make the screencast with the camcorder footage over it.
@Mafkeesdejong yes, that's covered in the "Ask TWIL: Why I Use Fedora & Creating a Video Intro" video (I go over the source of the background video, overlaying the Tux image and my logo, and making it all fit together). Good luck!
@kurthewett I completely missed this comment earlier. Sorry about that.
I think GIMP was removed because the "normal" desktop user doesn't use it much, if at all, and they changed from pidgin to empathy a while back (9.10?) to allow for video/voice chat, desktop sharing, etc.
@donavinschlosser233 Thanks! I actually don't use a webcam in most of my videos. I use a Flip Ultra HD, and composited the footage over the screencast using Kdenlive.
Oh one more comment for the day. I installed kdenlive in my ubuntu, but the end result comes incoherent. Sound come weird and the format is mp4. Do you know what I need to do to produce in another format like avi. I make videos and then use devede to configure the quality and compress them, but kdenlive is kind of confusing as far as format is concerned.
@Nanotech233 nanotech .. KDENlive is buggy as hell to me at least. i use OpenShot. google it and on their website under download choose what ubuntu version u have and download all 3 files. install the python one first. then teh rest. and you will LOVE openshot that is what i use for my daily video home editing and its fast and amazing. with lots of efffects.
@thisweekinlinux I took the recommendation of the hot girl making Linux videos in youtube (NixiePixel), I finally decided to get the Logitech Pro 9000 webcam, it worked right out of the box, but configuring the microphone when using RecordMydesktop was a challenge, but fortunately I found another video tutorial in youtube that told me how to configure the microphone on recordMydesktop.
@Nanotech233 very cool. I've been watching NixiePixel for a long time. I did a brief review of a program that's supposed to be included in Fedora 13 that is similar to guvcview
@thisweekinlinux really that is great, give the name of it I want to try it. Guvcview reminds me of luvcview only that guvcview has an interface and not terminal base as luvcview, plus it also records sound, luvcview is limited to sound recording. The only reason why I had installed luvcview back in those days was to configure the saturation and brightness of cheese, but now that problem has been resolved in cheese. Thanks again.
@Nanotech233 it's called uvcdynctrl-gtk, but I believe it only currently exists for Fedora. If it gets put into Fedora 13 it should get pushed back upstream into Gnome, though. It's entirely possible guvcview uses uvcdynctrl for the changes it allows you to make, and uvcdynctrl-gtk is just a standalone app that makes those changes for other apps.
any news about alsa? I've ran into a bug which forces me to reload alsa manually each time after boot up, because it don't see my sound system hardware somehow... Thats the last thing which annoys me with ubuntu, without that i wouldn't change it to any other OS... In my opinion windows is doomed, it will be used only as a gaming platform... Be Free - Use Linux! ;)
@jackasz1990 I haven't read anything about alsa, other than Ubuntu is now firmly entrenched with Pulseaudio. I know a lot of people refuse to use pulse, but I definitely don't mind it.
Looks very nice! I'm downloading this right now to test out on Virtualbox. And yes I hope they work on the ATI issues, which would definitely help support all the users with ATI.
@H4x0r18 out of the box, it's got some decent ATI support with the open source driver, but until ATI comes out with a driver that works on newer Xorg/Xserver versions, there's no possibility of working proprietary drivers I believe.

I have an AMD 64 X2 Laptop which is using a build in nVidia Chipset.
Does the Ubuntu works on nVidia Chipset Laptop ?
Dantei136 1 year ago
@Dantei136 Ubuntu should work just fine with it, but if you know what model the chipset is specifically you can put that in google and add the word "ubuntu" to it to see if people have had problems with it.

@thisweekinlinux
Hey thanks I just installed it a few days ago.
I totally doesn't have any problem with it.
It is just awesome.
But I do have a problem to connect my Facebook account on it.

@Dantei136 I've got my facebook account connected and I don't think I have any problems with it.

@thisweekinlinux
I still having that problem.
I just don't know why.
Dantei136 1 year ago
@Dantei136 I just tested it here, and apparently Gwibber just won't do Facebook for the moment. I know I've had problems with it in the past. Looks like I had Facebook connected to Empathy for instant messaging, not status updates. Sorry about that.

i have a sort of bug in ubuntu. when I'm logged in i can't connect an external display like a projector because the OS gets stuck. i have to log out , connect the projector.
I have a hp pavilion dv2000. does anyone have the same problem ?
davidsfc9 1 year ago
@davidsfc9 looks like the dv2000 comes with the Nvidia card, right? Do you have the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed?
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux some dv200 come with nvidia but mine is intel, that's why it seems wierd to me, anyway it's not biggie, i don't use it all the time and still like ubuntu n.n
davidsfc9 1 year ago
You can easily run both Ubuntu and some form of WIndows as dual OS. I keep Windows XP because I like to play games like Call of Duty and others but use Ubuntu for everything else. Tried Win 7 Ultimate and it is a nightmare.

@thisweekinlinux I like your beard as well. I am jealous. -.- I want the one you have. BTW if Ubuntu could run Steam like WIndows does I´d immediately change to Ubuntu but it doesn´t -.-
PatriotGermanEmpire 1 year ago
@PatriotGermanEmpire hehe, thanks.
It's possible to run Steam within Wine, but it's not perfect. There were rumors that Valve was going to bring Steam to Linux, but nothing substantiated, sadly.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux Yeah I already know that you can run Steam within Wine and that´s why I said LIKE on Windows. The problem is that the games are windowed as far as I know. Get over the edge of the window, do one click and it´s inactiv and you stop moving ingame... . Do you know what I´m talking about? I like Linux but there should at least be a Steamversion for Linux. Otherwise I´d change to Linux and get a good console. Cause upgrading my PC for any new game gets anyoing and expensive.
PatriotGermanEmpire 1 year ago
@PatriotGermanEmpire ah, ok. Well, the games I've run on Steam within Wine didn't run Windowed unless I told them to.
I agree though, a version of Steam for Linux would be amazing.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux What about framrate? Did you experience any loss or gain? My problem with Ubuntu was that I wasn´t able to get the correct driver for my Colorful GeForce GT220. On the website of the manufacturer there are no driver versions for Linux. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 I got a temporary NVideo driver or something. How about the lag? My problem is that I can´t find any linux drivers for my ethernet card and my sound card. And what about direct x 9, 10 and 11? These aren´t supported..
PatriotGermanEmpire 1 year ago
@PatriotGermanEmpire I will say, framerate definitely isn't as good as it could be. I have a Gt240, and it ran Left 4 dead 2 pretty well, and Half life 2, if I remember correctly. If you go to System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers (may be called Hardware Drivers in 10.04) you can get the majority of drivers you'll need. Sound/ethernet are generally there out of the box.
DirectX is installable through Wine (winetricks does this easily)
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux I hope that there are at least some commercial games that run on Linux. I´m already thinking about a gaming console and a change to Linux Ubuntu. I´ve tried many Linux distributions and Ubuntu was the best of them.
PatriotGermanEmpire 1 year ago
@PatriotGermanEmpire there are some, but sadly, not many. There are quite a lot of indie games that are really impressive though. Depending on what you like, take a look at Amnesia: The Dark Descent (lots of videos about it here on YouTube), and World of Goo (puzzle game)

My question: Where was the problem?
janchokiss 1 year ago
@janchokiss I'm not sure what the problem was without some more information. usually it doesn't remove anything without you telling it to somehow though.

1. if i use in my pc, it dosenot gives sound, though icon appears on the bar.
2.if i change the pc or even run same pc at restart, it dosenot remember last settings.
Can anyone tell me the solution?
ifarooqs 1 year ago
@ifarooqs Let's see if I can help

For some reason WINE doesn't want to recognize any .exe files.
joshuagregorio 1 year ago
@joshuagregorio What pulseaudio bug? I know on 10.04 I've had quite a few instances where pulse just stopped working.
What sort of error are you getting with wine in the terminal?
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux It was a bug in 9.10 where if you changed say the sound balance or levels your subwoofer there would be bad quality audio and a high pitched noise. I'm not getting an error in terminal I get a popup saying that the file I'm trying to install is not marked as an executable.
joshuagregorio 1 year ago
i would use this if my windows 7 crashed and i lost all my data. (not a bad thing) this new version is beautiful though.

@txprodigy95 It's definitely a very decent distro. Much better, imho, than 9.10 was.

@txprodigy95 Yeah, Windows always runs great at first but gets more buggy the longer you operate it.
jimboinlimbo 1 year ago
@jimboinlimbo i totally agree with you. i format and reinstall every year so my hard drive doesn't get cluttered with old programs and drivers that i don't use any more... that's usually what happens that makes it run weird with me.
txprodigy95 1 year ago
Hey thanks for the video! I just downloaded this version (ubuntu 10.04) and installed it on virtual PC. I'm currently new to linux but still use windows. And I am just wondering which is better fedora or ubuntu? I also have fedora but it's already outdated, version 9, 2008. So yeah I'm new to linux and like experimenting with it.
kazzagazza2010 1 year ago
@kazzagazza2010 That's entirely a matter of preference. Ubuntu is wonderful for new users, and has a lot of great features that experienced users will love.
Fedora, on the other hand, is not terribly difficult to get running, and if you use a decent tutorial, you can have all the same codecs and drivers as you do on Ubuntu. I won't say it's as easy to get running as Ubuntu is, but once it's up, it's stable, fast, and easy to keep updated.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
That's not true!
The PLACES MENU is NOT the same as it always was.
A stupid change that you should never do, because it's not a matter of preferences but a change to worse, was to remove the Bookmarks folder.
You should be able to put all that crap: video and all that inside it; as well as your favourite folders which often have a long path.
.
- FREEDOM -
.
These stupid changes are making people say that the distribution begins to suck.
MarcianitoRajoy 1 year ago
. . .. Moreover you should be able to choose whether you want the folders in there to show their content in further submenus
MarcianitoRajoy 1 year ago
@MarcianitoRajoy Was it removed? On my 10.04 install the bookmarks are actually a part of the Places menu, without their own category.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux
Which item in the Places menu is the old "bookmarks" folder where you could see all your bookmarked folders?
MarcianitoRajoy 1 year ago
@MarcianitoRajoy In this video it doesn't show up, because it was a fresh install, but on my desktop all the Bookmarks I have created in Gnome show up in the main Places menu. Anything over 3-4 pop out to the right-hand side.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@thisweekinlinux Your bookmarks are directly filed in (or added to) the places menu, but not into a bookmarks folder, right?

why was gimp removed?
and why is empathy in and pidgin out?
kurthewett 1 year ago
@kurthewett I completely missed this comment earlier. Sorry about that.
I think GIMP was removed because the "normal" desktop user doesn't use it much, if at all, and they changed from pidgin to empathy a while back (9.10?) to allow for video/voice chat, desktop sharing, etc.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@kurthewett
... and empathy has same options but has less code too, and GIMP hmm in my opinion GIMP dont seat on cd.

@Nanotech233 I've used the H.264 preset in Kdenlive, and it produces a pretty decent AVI file.

@Nanotech233 nanotech .. I think they should swap guvcview for cheese. Even if it was added customization for the color or saturation on cheese, guvcview has more features.
Nanotech233 1 year ago
@Nanotech233 that definitely looks like a pretty cool piece of software. I might have to give it a shot (though I do very little work with webcams)
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux I took the recommendation of the hot girl making Linux videos in youtube (NixiePixel), I finally decided to get the Logitech Pro 9000 webcam, it worked right out of the box, but configuring the microphone when using RecordMydesktop was a challenge, but fortunately I found another video tutorial in youtube that told me how to configure the microphone on recordMydesktop.
Nanotech233 1 year ago
@Nanotech233 very cool. I've been watching NixiePixel for a long time. I did a brief review of a program that's supposed to be included in Fedora 13 that is similar to guvcview
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux really that is great, give the name of it I want to try it. Guvcview reminds me of luvcview only that guvcview has an interface and not terminal base as luvcview, plus it also records sound, luvcview is limited to sound recording. The only reason why I had installed luvcview back in those days was to configure the saturation and brightness of cheese, but now that problem has been resolved in cheese. Thanks again.
Nanotech233 1 year ago
@Nanotech233 it's called uvcdynctrl-gtk, but I believe it only currently exists for Fedora. If it gets put into Fedora 13 it should get pushed back upstream into Gnome, though. It's entirely possible guvcview uses uvcdynctrl for the changes it allows you to make, and uvcdynctrl-gtk is just a standalone app that makes those changes for other apps.

H4x0r18 1 year ago
@H4x0r18 out of the box, it's got some decent ATI support with the open source driver, but until ATI comes out with a driver that works on newer Xorg/Xserver versions, there's no possibility of working proprietary drivers I believe.
