I remember watching this live back in 2007. Right when the three out of the four horsemen of the New Hollywood era of the 1970s came out on stage, I immediately knew that Scorsese was going to win. I mean, it's nice to have Coppola, Lucas, and Spielberg give Greengrass, Frears, Inarritu, or Eastwood the Oscar...but it's truly RIGHT and JUST for the Four Horsemen of New Hollywood to reunite on stage for the presenting and awarding of Best Director.
The fact that He won and oscar for this just proves how stupid the academy is. This man Has made some of the most powerful films i've ever seen. This wasn't even his best work. He should have at least 6 oscars
@DINKOvoXo That's sorta the reason why he won this time. The consensus was that it was absurd Scorsese got snubbed so many times for his past works, they wanted him to have atleast one academy award.
@homer422 well, this was just their excuse for them not to give him an Honorary Oscar. It's not that The Departed wasn't a bad movie, but I just don't feel it was worth the win. Now Scorsese at his best in my opinion? Unquestionably "Goodfellas" but for me personally, "Raging Bull", phenomenal directing on his part, which helps when he works with an actor he knows very well. Makes me wish Marty would make Leo piss off and work with De Niro again like the good ol' days.
I still get chills when the ovation continues long after the music ends. Long time coming to the greatest there ever would be...You're the man Marty!!!!!
@madiboy77 No. Black actors and actresses have won, it just doesnt happen as much. Hattie McDaniel was the first black person to win an Oscar over 50 years ago. Then Sidney Poitier, Louis Gossett, Jr., Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Denzel Washington (Twice), Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Mo'Nique, and Morgan Freeman. If you watch this year, Viola Davis will be nominated for her role in The Help. I hope she wins cause her performance was amazing.
that is 4 of the best directors to have ever lived. christopher nolan is great, but he isn't near them yet. Star Wars, Schindlers List, Apocalypse now, the godfather, and everything, just..not yet, he will maybe get there, but now, those films are masterpieces, the prestige ain't no apocalypse now sorry bud. @PrimaveraPictures
George Lucas should have an oscar for everything he has written and directed. poetic literature is totally undermined in holly wood and to the academy
George Lucas should have an oscar for everything he has written and directed. poetic literature is totally undermined in holly wood and to the academy
It's funny how I thought at the time when The Departed came out and MS won Best Director, I did not think The Departed was his best, now that I have watched it about 6 times, it is certainly one his best. While TD was a remake, there is still Scorsese, the language, the crispiness to the visual aspect of the film.
Martin Scorsese's best movies: Goodfellas, the departed, gangs of new york, shutter island, the aviator. Stephen Speilberg's : catch me if you can, saving private ryan, E.T, A.I, minorty report, war of the worlds, the terminal. Clint Eastwood's : million dollar baby, grand torino, invitius, hereafter, mystic river. Peter Jackson's: lord of the rings trilogy, king kong. chistopher nolan's: memento, inception, the dark knight, batman begins, the prestige. they jus make crazy movies

Oscars are crap and mostly serve as a governmental political tool! Or else Altman, Hitchcock, Scorsese (Prior to the departed - which itself was a poor film), Kurosawa, Nolan and Kubrick woulve won 1 single oscar for directing. While Speilberg gets an oscar for glorifying the miniscule US presence durin WW2!! Also, as good as Schindler's list was, if it had pretty much the same screenplay, black/white image, tragic/heroic story, but wasnt about the holocaust he wouldnt have won - ie color purple
I salute to Mr.Scorsese, and I really enjoyed The Departed honestly. But I beg you, good hearted American movie lovers, to go rent DVD of Infernal Affairs and enjoy the difference of two masterpieces. Which is superior, doesn't matter. Enjoy the magnificent acting of HongKong stars as great as Hollywood casts, it will enrich your love for the Departed even more. Just enjoy the difference, I assure you it will be a rich experience.

The difference is Scorsese is still RELEVANT! Spielberg is also a bit but nobody cares about Coppola and Lucas. Scorsese still among the Best of Today with: The Coen brothers, Paul Thomas anderson, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan and all the others from the "90's Generation"
@shotta0121 I don't know what it is, but for some reason, people think that just because a movie is old, it makes it better? . . . it confuses me . . . A LOT! Sure, taxi driver and raging bull was good . . . but goodfellas played out as more of a documentary then a movie . . . leaving the departed to be a all around better movie . . . of coarse, not better than taxi driver and raging bull, but I think gangs of new york should be up there with those two.
@shotta0121 they were all made in different years and the departed didnt have much competition here and deserved it over the other ones nominated they other ones were in years that had a load of other amazing movies so they didnt win. i like departed the best though :)
@shotta0121 you cant compare the three to eachother..completely opininated saying miles better. I personally liked the departed more than casino. Each Scorsese film has its own unique vibe to it. dont compare epic to epic
Martin Scorsese's speech: I knew I was gonna win, it would have been a little awkward to have three of the movie brats up here and the guy who was nominated for Babel won. I would like to thank the producers Michael and Julia Phillips, oh wait, this speech is for Taxi Driver, I have to thank Robert Denrio, this film couldn't have been made without you, wait this speech is for raging bull, This film couldn't have been made without Pileggi's great book, oh wait this is for goodfellas.
@PrimaveraPictures i'd rather do next: Martin Scorsese + Steven Spielberg + George Lucas + Francis Ford Coppola+ Christopher Nolan > Uwe Boll + Paul W.S. Anderson + Peter Hyams
@PrimaveraPictures Christopher Nolan is a brilliant director but he has nothing on Spielberg, Scorsese and Coppola especially these guys have a real sense of vision and understanding of cinema they address important issuses aswell as make a political and social statements Christopher Nolan relies too much on special effects and big names, he has a great sense of vision and style but there is no comparison really with him and these pioneers that thave been making films for 30+ years
@blablaman233 Nolan has a very visual style. If you look closely you can see his work is similar to that of Hitchcock and Kubrick. To say he has nothing on Spielberg as Nolan uses to much special effects is a bit strange when Spielberg has made films like Close Encounters, E.T and Jurassic Park which changed special effects. Look at Nolan's work, Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige, no special effects, that leaves the Batman films and Inception which needed the effects to work.
@MsJilsephonie I beg to differ. Lucas, Coppola, Scorsese and Spielberg have already developed themselves as greats, But seeing that every movie Nolan has made is utterly fantastic, I think he'll wind up having an equal degree of excellence when he reaches that point in his career.
This shows corruption and there is corruption that's for sure with the 2008 election even in the highest office there's corruption this guy in there now
Lucas' idea for SW alone, was more original than anything Nolan has ever done and SW will be be remembered 50 years from now, unlike Inception. Overall, I enjoy GL older work way more than overrated Nolan.
Oh man, You should imagine your dad is like, Francis Ford Coppola. Then you could go like: 'hey mom, I'm writing a report about jurassic park so I'm of to see uncle Stevie. that's just nuts :D
No way he won that. Everybody who saw 'Internal Affairs' knows this isnt right! How can you straight copy a film and win an oscar? Unbelievable how he takes credit for something he didnt create. Not fair at all!!!
@shifta187 ...SO YOU ARE SAYING THAT THIS IS THE 1 REMAKE EVER MADE?...COME ON! WAKE UP! THE DEPARTED ISENT ORIGINAL FILM OR IDEA....BUT IT IS NOT SIMPLE A "COPY"....IT IS A WONDERFULL CRAFTED AND DIRECTED FILM WITH GREAT SCRIPT (ALSO THE DEPARTED WON FOR ADAPTED SCREENPLAY) AND PERFORMNACES BY THE ACTORS...GREAT FILM! STILL, THIS ISENT HIS BEST FILM BY FAR...HE DESERVE OSCARS FOR TAXI DRIVER,M RAGIGN BULL, GOODFELLAS....
@TheLunaticSeries OF COURSE...THATS BEACAUSE YOU NEVER SAW, AFTER HOURS, TAXI DRIVER, MEAN STREETS, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, GOODFELLAS, RAGING BULL, TO NAME A FEW!!! GROW UP!
Call me a snob, but in my world you can't call yourself a film buff unless you're a devoted fan of Martin Scorsese's work. Creative, often dazzling, with a keen narrative sense and striking style all his own. Marty.... oscar well deserved!!
Call me a snob, but in my world you can't call yourself a film buff unless you're a devoted fan of Martin Scorsese's work. Creative, often dazzling, with a keen narrative sense and striking style all his own. Marty.... oscar well deserved!
"Guys, I never won an Academy Award." That's because you're the only one of them who never made another good achievement in directing after the seventies, Mr. Lucas.
I love Martin Scorsese so much. He'll have this serious look on his face and then as soon as he smiles he looks like a mischievous little boy and you can't help smiling with him.
Sorry to say this but marty never won an oscar bc he wasn't hollywood based, but new york. Look at his greatest movies, all set in New York. All produced in New York. The academy is more West Coast Based. It sound's half assed but its right
@urloldude I don't know if I agree. Saying it's West Coast Based when such non-West Coast filmmakers like Robert Redford who beat out Scorsese for Best Director or child rapist like Roman Polanski who beat him out with The Pianist doesn't seem to be a valid reason. Even fellow New Yorker Woody Allen has an Oscar. Still, it takes the academy a while to catch up and give someone an Oscar. Russell Crowe for Gladiator when it should have been for The Insider is one example.
@potterwork In the documentary "Hearts of darkness" there is a part where it shows De niro, scorsese, spielberg, coppola, lucas, De palma and a bunch of other famous people having a cookout at Francis Coppola's house... It's crazy!
Clint Eastwood has 2 Oscars for directing, I mean he's pretty good, but something wrong with Scorsese only having one. He should have atleast 3 by now. Wake the f@#K up Academy!
This award is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overdue. There's something wrong with the Academy when Martin Scorsese, who has been called the best director alive, who has a movie declared a classic in every decade since the 70's, wins his first Oscar in the 21st century.
Martin surely deserved winning an Oscar at some point, and the Academy knew it too. He won this year mostly for a kind of compensation than for really being its best piece of work.
i love george lucas' neck

@markrulz30 yeah. I hope it'll be soon!!
BreakWatcher 2 months ago
No way he won that. Everybody who saw 'Internal Affairs' knows this isnt right! How can you straight copy a film and win an oscar? Unbelievable how he takes credit for something he didnt create. Not fair at all!!!
shifta187 3 months ago

It is an insult to the art of film that Scorsese wasn't standing there 30 years prior.

Call me a snob, but in my world you can't call yourself a film buff unless you're a devoted fan of Martin Scorsese's work. Creative, often dazzling, with a keen narrative sense and striking style all his own. Marty.... oscar well deserved!!
JKM8511 3 months ago 3
@JKM8511
you can like film and not like Scorsese, easily.
What s stupid statement.

liam197199 3 months ago
@liam197199 films are adopted all the time & The Departed's about 400x better than the original
Frantepic18 3 months ago
@liam197199 It's not his mistake to win for it and he have far better movies than departed....now about him before commenting.

And he's a fucking genius.

Sorry to say this but marty never won an oscar bc he wasn't hollywood based, but new york. Look at his greatest movies, all set in New York. All produced in New York. The academy is more West Coast Based. It sound's half assed but its right
urloldude 4 months ago

It's crazy!
DonRMB 1 month ago 3
Clint Eastwood has 2 Oscars for directing, I mean he's pretty good, but something wrong with Scorsese only having one. He should have atleast 3 by now. Wake the f@#K up Academy!
lherman22 4 months ago
This guy deserves way more than one oscar, I swear he is like a movie genius!
But I gotta say, it must have been hard to choose, Eastwood's "Letters from Iwo Jima" were bloody brilliant as well!

does anybody know which song that is thats playing while he walks up to the stage?
epicstudiosable 4 months ago
This award is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overdue. There's something wrong with the Academy when Martin Scorsese, who has been called the best director alive, who has a movie declared a classic in every decade since the 70's, wins his first Oscar in the 21st century.
Coldplayere 4 months ago
Anything with Martin Scorsese's name on it is enough for me, this is gonna be awesome!!
LemmyDecaution 4 months ago
Yeah Eastwood probly beat the shit out of Scorcese
LBJstevenash13 4 months ago
It seems to be an honor NOT to win one, which he did for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and Mean Streets.
WikiNixa 4 months ago
Martin surely deserved winning an Oscar at some point, and the Academy knew it too. He won this year mostly for a kind of compensation than for really being its best piece of work.
