  • I'm not really diggin that you need specific tools to do basic things on this rifle... that's not really practical in my book.

And it looks like your ACOG is super far back... are you still getting the right eye relief?

  • Ignore my comment. Thought I was doing a search. Sorry.

  • Scar16s

  • Thank you!!! BEAUTIFULLY MADE VIDEO.

  • amazing review. I am ready to go buy it right now.

  • This gas piston system is better than the system used in the Colt SP901 ?

  • Thanks for the very informative review. I am currently looking at getting one. You answered most of my questions in the video review. Great work!

  • This review was first class: very straightforward and thorough without being too wordy and even answered the one question of AR lower compatibility that I had on my mind.

  • would you go with this or the scar16s?

  • Comment removed

  • Looks like the M27 iar from BF3!

  • @iTziLLUMY The M27 is almost identical. It fires from an open bolt for better cooling and has a heavier profile barrel, different mag etc... It's essentially a MR556 designed for a sustained high rate of fire. From what Ive heard, the Marines hated it at first because giving up a 200 rnd LMG for a gussied up assault rifle was kind of heretical. But the M27 has its merits, and they've warmed up to it.

  • I'm already sold on the gun can't wait for mine! Fantastic review man really well put together

  • @LeonardMichaelis they usually run for about $2400 give or take a few hundred. Its crazy

  • AK reliability with AR accuracy. This rifle had 3 times less malfunctions than the M4 in the last U.S. Army tests.

  • Very nice and informational review!

  • how is your experience utilizing the iron sight on the acog?

  • Is the AR-15 upper compatible with the 416 lower?

  • i have the hk416n issued as my weapon in the Norwegian army, we have the disassembly tool on one side of the hk-karabiner hook on the sling and the magazine disassemby tool on the other side of the hook. and since the sling is hooked on to the sling adapter on the handguard we never lose it. hk should have included this sling with the mr556 if you ask me...

  • needle nose pliers to adjust elevation

  • Best HK MR556 review on YouTube thanks

  • ouch! rear sight, that would make anyone mad as hell. Well the Germans are learning to play the Capitalist game. Just make them buy a special tool only we make, lol. Nice shooting though

  • Great video.. thanks for your time to make/post it. I wonder if this is worth the premium over a LMT piston 5.56mm? (I have a Colt LE6920 now - this would be an add). TY

  • Was curious to know if there are any rifles with a left hand twist vs. right. Seems like most are right and I wanted to know why. Thanks!

  • Great video and review of the MR 556. Thank You!!

This will be a great addition to my current collection.

  • can this weapon pass the "over the beach test" ?

  • @williamblake69 i saw the video with the hk 416, and the "over the beach" test, but what i noticed was that the water spayed out the back of the stock upon firing after being submerged, this version seems to have a different stock, seems like there is no "outlet" for the water

  • why does the barrel taper like that sturm ??

  • ill justtake the upper personally., i hate the lowers.,takedown TOOLS?? buttstock sucks., buttpad falls off??, i dont want to have to have a tool to open my rear takedown pin>>> but yea, the UPPERS are top notch

  • your vids are still hands down the best available to the public, you are surely giving the literature at the stores a run for their money..... and best of all its free for us, thanks :)

  • I live in California. Can't have a pistol grip and tool-less detachable magazine on the same weapon except a .22... Would a Monster-Man Grip (originally made for the AR15) be compatible with this rifle? If not, maybe with some DIY modification? From my observation, they look pretty much the same... I need confirmation though.

  • wow looks liker im getting the AR that price is out of my league

  • @Sturmgewehre Have you had any problems w/ your ACR? I recall someone posting a video in youtube saying that the barrel says 5.56 nato, but when he shot 5/56, it started to cause problems. And after he returned it and got it back, they said he should shoot 223 instead. Lol, have you had any similar problems?

  • @timothychong48 It was one guy with all those problems, and I'm not sure how that worked out for him. The videos were pretty old, I would think the problems he experienced have long since been remedied. I have two ACR's and shoot them all the time (see my most recent video) and have no issues with either of them. Yes, I shoot very hot XM193F ammo through it and never have problems, and I shoot Wolf without issue. I think they're great rifles.

  • @Sturmgewehre Awesome!! Thanks for the positive feedback, the ACR's reputation aint that good with other people. Good job with all of your videos man, I think your vids are the most informative, keep up the good job and send them vids coming!!

  • anyone else think it was Larry the Cable Guy doing the review before they clicked on the video?

  • Just for reference HK designed the high reliability steel mag for the British army. When the standard assault rifle of the British army was upgraded a few years back to the L85A2 by HK the contract included new mags.

Irony is the British army purchased 1 million Magpul EMAG last year for use in Afghanistan.

  • Excellent review

  • is recoil on mk556a1 < ar15 since mk556a1 is 2 lbs heavier?

great review...this video will help me choose what I'm looking for...thanks!

  • is it worth $3000?? I dont think so. Paying mostly for the name. If it said HK416 on it they could sell it for even more just cause of the name

  • Why did you take down you ACR vs Scar video :(

  • Great review

  • Great job on the review.

  • If they would of kept the same 416 barrel with chrome lining, and I don't like the 'tapered rifling', rather just have standard hammer forged chromed, or even nitriding, maybe polygonal rifling? I REALLY wish that they had a bayo lug.. Why not, it's made here in U.S. right, at least they went with a NON M4 length handguard, prefer mid-length D.I.'s and GPU's, ESPECIALLY with a bayo lug on 16" mid length. I'd prefer an Adcor B.E.A.R. Elite, GREAT VID!

  • @reeseman67 For price, performance, chromed and hammer forged FN bbl, and a TRUE free float tube. Still wish IT had a bayo lug with a middy gas system.. Ehh, I'll stick my Bulgy/'K-Var' bayo I got on the cheap from Centerfire on the SOON TO BE HERE SGL-21 and my M9 on mid-length/20" AR's... And Mossberg 590A1, !

  • would a pmag work with a standard ar15 lower?

  • @humboldtgunguy The AR's I own, all of them use PMAGs without a problem.

  • Thanks for the excellent review. Best I have seen so far. Trying to decide between the HKMR223, HKMR308 and SIG SG 550 Classic Green (I live in Canada). I really hate that butt stock. Can see it falling off at the worst possible time. Do you think it is easily replacable with an aftermarket butt stock?

  • Thanks for the excellent review. Best I have seen so far. Trying to decide between the HKMR223, HKMR308 and SIG SG 550 Classic Green (I live in Canada). I really hate that butt stock. Can see it falling off at the worst possible time. Do you think it is easily replacable with an aftermarket butt stock?

  • @calgarywarmfloors You don't like a butt-stock that you have never handle or touched before????

  • @Frankfritz So sure of yourself Frankfritz? I have handled both the HK MR556 and the HK MR762.

  • Outstanding review.

  • Too bad this thing is so gosh darn expensive

  • You get what you pay for when it comes to guns & I know this oh to well. H&K products are built very well & thats one thing I do know.I own some very high end weapons & some cheap stuff over the years that I got for a steal.

I wont look at the cheap stuff at all because I know better, its hard to resell cheap weapons & most of its is just junk with a fancy badge on it.

  • i NEED one of these

  • German engineering FTW

  • Could you adjust elevation using bullet heads? I think that's what they tried to do, so that no tool was needed.

  • @Lardman678 using 7.62x51 you can

  • Great review of this rifle little too expensive for my tastes but you kept my interest through the entire video. I dont want to get into a whose videos are better discussion but i think i really prefer your style to Nutn's anyday. but thats just my preference keep up the good work!!

  • Ok, great! Thanks for the feedback

  • Ok, I've watched several of your reviews. But I'm just curious. If you had to own ONLY one rifle, which one would you own:

    Scar 16S

    Scar 17S

    AKS-74U

    ACR

    HK MR556A1

  • @Philippeorlando Of the ones listed, the ACR.

  • @Sturmgewehre

Would you mind elaborating more? Why the ACR?

  • @Philippeorlando I prefer the ergonomics. I shoot the rifle very well. The rifle can be completely stripped in seconds without any tools including the removal of the barrel. It's probably the most evolved military style rifle on the market right now.

  • @Philippeorlando that rifle with the best ammunition support!

  • Great video, great review! Keep 'em coming.

  • 2500$ are not mutch for the type of rifle that mostlikely killed osama bin laden

  • How would this compare to the SCAR 16S?

  • Great review!.. very professional. I interested in th 7.62 version. It would be nice if you could review that too. Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • never think compatible with others ar15 lover receiver.

  • And everyone bitches about how expensive the Ruger SR556 is. lol One day I'm gonna win the lottery and buy an H&K!

  • Awesome review as usual. How do u think this one stacks up against the Barrett rec7?

  • Very helpful review you just saved me over 3 grand thanks so much!

  • the Emag and the 20 round Pmag will work with the MR556

  • Why no comparison/mentioning of the trigger action/feel?

  • Your groups with M193 and Wolf are worse or no better than groups I can shoot with my Colt 6920, and I'm convinced you're a better shot than I.

So, then, my biggest question is, why should I spend $2500 to $3000 for a rifle that's as accurate as an AK... When I can just get an AK with all the trimmings for that much?

Alternately, why get that over a DD or Colt?

Fantastic reviews, sad to say the rifle doesn't seem worth it.

  • Fantastic review! Love the way it is structured - both table top and field. The guy seems very professional, and it's a joy to hear what he says. I'm more of a handgun-kind-of-guy, but getting into rifles. Here in Norway, the military uses Heckler & Koch, both HK416 and HK417. The civilian version of HK416 is called MR223 here, and MR556A1 in the USA. The HK417 is called MR308 here. But what is it called in the USA? Would love to see you make a review of the latter as well.

  • Hey Sturmgewehre, If H@K sells you one less tool in a toolkit you got hosed.

  • lol bild a zombie frankenstein gun :D

  • good unbiased review.

  • best review ever.good job mate

  • i absolutely HATE the hk sights on all of their guns, if i have a AR, i want it to have the old fashioned sights, chrome lined barrel, and 15 inch barrel, everything else on the MR556 is nice, like the stock, grip and magwell, but it would be way better if it could take Pmags, and id put a magpul handguard on it too

  • Seems like a nice gun apart from the weight. I was surprised to hear it weighs almost 9 lb barebones. Seems a bit much for a 5.56 with a 16" barrel.

  • Comment removed

  • MR762? and what's the little tube by the ejection port?

  • It's real?!

  • Are you going to do a review on the MR762A1?

    thanks

  • as usual great review, thanks. You could build one bad ass ar for 2500-3000, dont think i want something i need a tool to field strip, and pmags.........

  • Great video! Very detailed.

  • Awesome Review! Thanks for helping me in my decision :)

  • Great review!

  • I want the HK but no way can i justify paying that much $. I could buy 2 ARs and a pistol for that $. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the review!

  • H&K, perfecting the art of ripping customers off. It may be smooth, but I'll deal with slightly looser tolerances for several thousand rounds of ammo price difference.

  • Isn't elevation usually set by adjusting the front sight? Is the HK front sight not adjustable?

  • @KirShizzle

    Nope.

On HK's diopter sights, both the Horizontal and Vertical adjustments are done with the rear unit. The front post sight is fixed.

  • when you have a "group" of hits in a almost perfect horizontal line, thats NOT the gun.

  • @ 17:29 I seen the Krinkov AKS-74U! ! ! ! !

  • @TMHonfire102 Yup, that's my personal protection rifle. :)

  • @Sturmgewehre Oh my, I need to see a vid of this in action soon!!! LOL

  • @Sturmgewehre personal protection you can rely on no matter what right? :D gotta love those AKs...the only way you can get them to STOP working is run it over with a tank...LOL

  • I've notice that the curveture on the P-Mags are different than your typical STANAG AR Magazines. The curveture on The P-mag starts more from the top, while the STANAG type curveture starts almost half way down from the top. This plus the MR's magwell design been parallel to the barrel, compared to your typical AR magwell with slight upward angle from the back of the magwell is why the P-Mags won't fit. I have a similar issue with my FN FS2000.

    Another great thorough review, Thanks.

  • My kinda rifle right there, might sell one of my ARs for it...

  • sig 516 is half the price n just as good

  • You said it was a pleasure to shoot it, that it's smoother than other ARs. I suppose it has to do with the upper receiver construction, bolt and the lower receiver that doesn't rattle at all thanks to those pins. Does it feel the same way if you change HK's lower receiver with a standard AR lower? It's to take advantage in the disassembly, so you don't have to use that modified Allen wrench.

  • The more i live in California the more my brain starts seeing "Evil Features"... i hate this state.

  • The Oly barrel is 1:9 twist.

  • Do they sell just the upper? A LaRue lower and that upper would be a sweet system.

  • what kind of gloves are those and where can you get them

  • @arbiter569 They are Mechanix gloves and they can be purchased at Amazon.com.

  • @Sturmgewehre thanks

  • very good video, I think that like the bushmaster ACR prices will drop fairly quickly after a period of time. The quality of manufacturing, barrel thickness and HK reliability would possibly be what drives me to buy this rifle as I think you only need one good rifle however I would hope there would be a longer barreled version.

  • 3k rifle and requires a special takedown tool and a special tool to adjust the rear iron sight which isn't included.... Not to mention the probability of loosing both special tools makes this rifle a no brainer .... Buy a 5.56 bushmaster, cleaning kit and large amounts of ammo...an use the money saved and practice shooting once a month... Good review though...

  • 2011..... and no rear sight tool for a proprietary sight? No P-mags? that butt-stock and grip, and 9 pounds before Light and AFG? 2500.00 to 3K? I'll go Daniel's or Knights armament any day over that set-up

Sorry HK, that's a big Negative!

  • Did you do the Over The Beach Test to ensure its reliability? lol

  • For me atleast it would make more sense if you were going to buy this weapon is to only buy the upper if possible and a standard ar lower. No pmag problems and will probably save you a little chunk of change. Great vid I didnt think hk was ever going to comeout with a civilian version of there 416!

  • I haven't shot this rifle, and probably never will because of the price tag, but did examine one at the NRA convention. I'll second StG's comments about the grip. It just feels weird compared to any other AR grip I've used. The buttstock felt okay and to be honest I didn't check-out the trapdoor, so can't comment on how easily it will open. Overall I came away with a feeling of "This is what $2.5k buys these days?"

  • If you want to be objective when comparing weights you should compare MR with a monolithic rails -equipped M4, the difference wouldn't be so big ;)

  • @EmperorPalpa

Actually, the weight difference would still be pretty big. The MR556A1 has the heaviest barrel I've seen on a M4 sized rifle. Take a look at the disassembly video. Plus, I compare it to a standard M4 because that's what I felt most people want to see it compared to.

  • 9+ lbs with with the HK mag is way too heavy for an intended carbine with a 16 inch barrel, and that's stock configuration! My 20 inch SS barreled Ar15 with with FF rails and a Leopold 2.5-8 MRT optic is just under 10 lbs. I'll take my 10 lbs souped up AR15 over the 9lbs stock carbine any day.

  • lol I want to buy a mr556a1 upper with a plumcrazy lower. Make it cheap n ghetto! :P

  • Hi, a comparison between the SCAR and the 416 would be nice

    THX

  • Comment removed

  • the PMAGs thing is weird... I tried both 20 and 30 rounds PMAGs on a European MR223 and they did work...very tight fit but they locked inplace and hold the bolt open on the last round

  • Two questions. Do P-mags work with the HK upper on Oly lower? With the HK upper on Oly lower, does the rifle hold its zero? Thanks.

  • @scottcho The problem with the PMAG's is specific to the HK lower, so yes - the PMAGs work fine in the Oly lower. The zero doesn't shift when you swap lowers, or shouldn't, since the sights are mounted to the upper.

  • Any person who carries a rifle with assembly pins will always carry a multi-tool. The disassembly tool is just a redundancy.

  • $2500-$3000 for a MR556A1??!?!? I'll take it, In Canada we get the German made version MR223 which is $4500... Oh by the way, Canadian dollar value is higher than US right now...

  • So would you rather buy a POF or this HK? I think HK rapes you just for the brand name, we all know that. I would rather go POF.

  • "P-Mags No go. E-Mags Thumbs up" Hahaha amazing.

Also a great review as always :)

  • I really wish you had done a comparison with it against the SCAR 16, that's it's one and only current competition (same function, caliber, and price range).

  • Outstanding review,I'm waiting to pick mine up at the end of this month.thanks for the info on the mags! I was getting ready to put a order in for pmags!

  • Gotta love this bullcrap going on with youtube's view counter. You and some other great channels have been freezing at 301 views for hours today.

  • Good review, and seems like a good rifle, but it's a no go for me. Also why wouldnt HK give you the rear sight tool? I have a Rock River Arms DI AR-15 and one of their new Piston guns, both are great, no problems at all, and not to mention, cheaper. Also all but 2 of my 11 mags are magpul PMAG

  • Great review.

  • obviously the atf took ur sight tool so u couldnt shot anything haha. not my first choice for rifles if i was going strictly for accuracy, id probably build a 24in bull barrel with a nice scope and target trigger etc looks like a really nice gun tho (how much $?)

  • @mark16443 oops i saw it 2500 haha thats alot for something that dont take pmags, shoulda put a pmag when u mix matched the lowers

  • Do you really thing this would be a better rifle than a KAC SR15E3?

  • I think I'd rather have a $1500 rifle and spend the extra $1000 on optics and magazines.

Oh and I agree that pistol grip and buttstock have to be replaced the ones it came with look like junk.

  • Good review.

  • Great video! So happy to see a great review about this rifle!!! A+++!!!

  • On the P-Mag, it looks like it's the waffle pattern that's stopping it from locking. Hypothetically, if you were to sand down that part of the mag to be level with the rest of it, would it lock properly?

  • Great vid, it seems to me though, to be a very expensive AR-15 with some mostly minor modifications, i would like to see this rifle go up against a high-end AR-15 factory piston rifle, like my LWRC M6A2, and see what the difference would be, since they nearly the same price (the LWRC is about $500 cheaper). Would also like to see it up against the SCAR light.

  • It seems VERY german, precise to the point of being anal.

  • @1775marsoc Yup, and I LOVE that about it. God bless zee Germans :D

  • Awesome!!

  • @3:25 Damn.., howd you get that castle nut on backwards ???

  • @MultiSr16 Good eye! It's not my rifle, it's a loaner for a class I'm taking next weekend. I got it from a gunshop that uses it as a demo rifle. I'm not sure if they did that or if Oly shipped it out that way.

  • @Sturmgewehre i def kno its not yours there Sturmgewehre, great review., i just saw smoke so i thought i'd say somethin:) yea thx i do got a good eye !

  • @Sturmgewehre good ol' Oly >>>Booooooo

  • this video just made my night

  • Ze Germans make ze best toys, ja? Lol. Honestly I thought the best part of the vid was your krink laying against the tree.... ;)

  • Great review as always man. I wouldn't pay the money for a "battle rifle" that I need a tool to adjust the sights and disassemble the rifle with. Plus, as you stated, that butt pad is a joke. I can easily see that thing getting lost while maneuvering in the woods. I hope the 416 is a bit better.

  • This is outstanding Work, I am a fan of the MP5, I prefer it to the M4-16

9 lbs is very heavy for a carbine, However the Muzzle FPS is impressive.

$2k is asking a bit much for this weapon, It's not a PS90 or a new weapons system. It's an M4.

Great Video, it allows the consumer to make a better decision on their weapon of choice.

  • Have you tested a Fulton Armory FAR-15? If so what is your opinion on them?

  • a good alternative is the Sig516.

  • Very informative review - thanks again. I'm glad that the uppers are interchangeable.

  • I think this review was well done,I would have liked to see an accuracy test between the Olympic Arms AR and the HK AR. I think that for the price it would not have the negatives that you pointed out. There has been 60 years of AR production and HK version doesn't hit a homerun for twice the price.

  • no rear sight tool, heavy, and won't take pmags?! and too expensive. great review.

  • holyshit, u got a olympic arms?

  • You should try out the sig 516, $1,300 and very well built.

  • Too bad HK increased the price by 400 bucks not even 6 months after its limited release. For some reason I really want this rifle still though and I'll have to sell my M6A3 i don't want 2 piston AR's. The reason I would think of doing that is because I really do prefer DI over any piston AR rifle mainly due to the fact its not standardized yet. Another reason is while the piston design is a solution to a none existent problem it creates other problems. Good review!!

    Sturmgewehre SR-15 review?

  • Now all you need to do is a sand, over the beach, and mud tests for the colt, hk, scar and acr. Then you'll see which rifle is really the best.

  • @ajatella Which one is the best?

  • Great job. I'm curious why anyone would want to get the lower given the weird pistol grip/stock, need for tool to take down the pins, and inability to use pmags (and presumably the new surefire 60 round mag). Germans might have over-engineered it a bit. The M1/M14 safety is muck like a regular AR safety - you can't place it on safe when it's hammer down - I guess it hasn't been a priority for the US military these past years :)
