  • I do about 20 a day after I finish with stain. I started doing it the way you are doing but I was wasting to much time. I now just center my blade with a little angle and fly through them, I try not to spend more than a few min per body. I love the shape of your guitar body!

  • @club805clothing Had a similar experience since uploading this one. When I did the slime green V for Dee J Nelson, I switched to the bi-metal blades, and scraped on an angle. Way faster. :)

  • Have you ever tried making a double neck?

Awesome vids by the way they are very helpful. I'm about to start making my own guitar (an explorer style) and your videos have been very helpful

  • Can you Shoot clear over the binding?

  • @1993Revhead Yes, the binding gets cleared with the rest of the body.

  • how much could it cost to have a binding scraped on my Tele, if I took it to a luthier? :) It's SO COOL :D

  • @supermoserre Does the body already have binding on it? If so. scraping the color from the binding is part of the paint process.

  • How much would this end up costing??

  • @craigcampbell94 ....to have binding scraped?

  • @jsullysix just for everything :L

  • @craigcampbell94 There's a custom quote request form at sullyguitars.us. That's the easiest way for me to getcha whatcha need. :)

  • Nice Shirt ! whose sully? lol jus kidding where could i get one? ill advertise for ya

  • @The80sFreak1984 you can get a shirt at sullyguitars.us

  • Thanks. I'm building a double neck Musicmaster (Mustang) bass over a 91 Strat. Your videos are very helpful. I want to first practice on a some scrap before painting.

    Best of luck!

  • So, if my goal is for a black guitar, do you suggest an initial flat black base coat and then apply the clear coats or clear coats and then black? Thanks.

  • @goodsac No need to seek out flat black. Just get black. :) Once your sanding is done, hit it with sealer, sand that flat, shoot your color, then clear it, then sand it flat, hit it with some more clear (depending on what you're shooting, do that within 24 hours), then shoot your last coats of clear. Google "reranch" (I can't post a link in comments) and read their "Reranch 101" about a million times. That'll give you all kinds of great info.

  • Thanks for your info. How would describe your paint process from beginning to end?

eg. 3 coats of lacquer...wait 24 hours.... sand ....3 coats of color....wait 24 hours. I would like to know if the process is a 5 day to 10 day process. What's the average for you?

  • @goodsac I have to figure in time for swearing and throwing things. :) I'm rarely (if ever) working on just one thing, so I can't really answer the question. It also depends on what you're shooting; I didn't use lacquer for clear; it was automotive urethane. All I really needed to do was hit it with about 4-5 coats in a day, and I could wetsand the next. It depends a lot on what you're shooting. In a nutshell, though, you should be able to get everything done within 10 days.

  • I am replacing tuners on a Musicmaster bass neck and the new tuners are not exactly lining up to the old holes. What do you recommend on filler and redrilling? Thanks.

  • @goodsac You could fill it with little Maple dowels; or mix up a filler made of maple dust + wood glue.

  • I like your video. Is the binding that you are scraping a painted on binding or something else? Thanks

  • @goodsac No, it's actual binding. Instead of masking off the binding on the face of the body, it's easier to just mask the sides of the binding, and scrape the top clean.

  • Hey Sully! Great videos. On my first stab at scraping the binding, I took off a little more than binding on the first 3 to 4 inches. After that I got the technique down and it looks great. What do you suggest for fixing the few spots of black lacquer that got chipped off?

  • You can jam the knife blade into a cork to make a depth stop as well. Then you won't have to be as finicky with your fingers.

  • @PikkaBird Nice one!

  • wuts the song playing while your scraping the binding???

  • @gibsonlespaul915 That's a song called Adrenaline by DJ Nelson. DJ is the guy that wrote and played the Sully's Guitar Garage theme song, and most of the instrumental heavy stuff that I use in the episodes is played by him. He's got a DVD coming out called Lead Guitar DNA and it's distributed through Doug Marks' Metal Method. Great player, even better person!

  • Hey Sully, ive been following alot of your builds, and i must say, u sir are on of the greatest guitar builders ive ever seen

  • @metallicafan1129 Wow, man, that's really nice of you to say. Thank you!

  • Do you get these parts like the body and binding from warmoth or do you do it all yourself from scratch?

  • @FireboltAce I built this body from scratch. I'm pretty sure that this particular body is in the opening credits, and you can see parts of its construction in previous videos.

  • Man, I would love to make guitars for a living. I just don't see it very practical... I'll defiantly be making a nice set sometime later in life!

  • @GunsNSnakepits heh...I'd like to do it for a living as well! It's definitely not the most lucrative career choice, that's for sure.

  • you are one funny dude my friend

  • @guithero11 Thanks! Gotta be good for somethin!

  • I find ALL your vids extremely helpful ! thanks a lot man !!

  • @DrShankenstein Thanks man!

  • cool

  • i love ur vids man!

  • @sr2elite1337 Thanks!

  • thanks so mutch sully :)

  • see thers a problem im replicating eddie vanhalens uitar and i hav the whole design on there if i strip it off im gonna have to redo it all or just wet sand it until its gone that you so mutch for your help please reply matt.

  • @MadAirsofterMatt you can sand the clear off, but it'll be a lonnnnng process, for sure.

  • awesome !!!!!! sully you rock !!!!

  • @piewacket thanks! there's a little outtake after the end credits....

  • i deriously need your help i sprayed my project white fender with acrylic enamel clear coat like the paints and it yellow tinted the white would sanding or clear coat compound take it out ??

  • @MadAirsofterMatt nope. Strip it; that enamel isn't going to ever cure hard enough to protect the finish. That said, most lacquers yellow over time, some more than others. If you want to keep it as white as possible, you should use a polyurethane clear.

  • hey sully if i wanted to do binding on my ibanez how would i aprouch that its a bolt on neck i just wanna do the binding on the body

  • @texashatemachine420 in a nutshell, you run a rabbeting bit around the body. search stewmac for binding router bits, and you'll see what i'm talking about. I can't post a link in the comments...sorry. The main issue is that if it's already painted, you'll most likely repaint it, and if there's a forearm contour, it may be more difficult.

  • @jsullysix hah so i should deffinatly practice this on one of the broken body's in my room then first an i found the bit u were talkin about.....i also heard u were from texas from my rhythm guitar player an i was like get the fuck out of here that guy could fuckin fix the world if it was made of wood and had 6 strings ha u r from the states right but r u from texas?

  • @texashatemachine420 Definitely practice on scrap. I should tell you though, that if the body is rounded over (which it probably is), you'll need to rout enough of the edge away so your binding ledge has a perfect 90 degree angle from the top to the side. I'm from Chicago, actually, but I've lived in Texas since late 2002.

  • do you plan to keep or sell this guitar? it seems like a personal project. alot of pain to sell it. its a beautiful finish i must say.

  • @superbandace thanks! This one is a prototype, so I wouldn't sell it because there are some things that I'll change on the production line. So if you'd like one in that finish, lemme know!

  • Gee Sully, I thought I was going to orgasm with the sexy way you said "relaxing" and then you had to ruin it by inviting me to go make coffee and cook for you. :P Interesting stuff!

  • @misslestat LOL Attract and repulse - that's my way! :)

  • Sully you should make a custom shop, because the guitars you make are amazing

  • @slashlp118 Thanks! That's the plan! All I need are some customers....hmmmmm. :)

  • this process would KILL me. patience is what i dont have lol

  • @deanrockerr1994 I hear ya, but it goes pretty quickly, believe it or not. You just have to be careful.

  • That laugh around 1:20 scared the shit out of me

  • @xxmatt95xx d'oh! I forgot to mention that Sully's Guitar Garage is "taped in front of a live studio audience!" ....or something!

  • that finish looks beautiful!!!

  • @guitarheo3 Thanks!

  • Seems like One could make some type of tool, maybe something holding a razor blade that has a lower roller that rides against the side while maybe 1/6 + off the blade sticks out over the edging top and scrapes the paint off. Some Engineer minded Person could easily design that I bet.

  • @iatemine Not a bad idea!

  • Nice work!

    you deserve way more views

  • @RockstarDaniel Hey, thanks man! Tell your friends!

  • Riveting Dude!

  • @HUNT4MUSIC Thanks!

  • again, great job sully!

  • @juanimuller Thank you

  • It's purrrty!!Nice work Sully.

  • @pulse0000 thanks!

  • Dude.. if i ever need something scraped, you're my man! \m/

  • @voodooriders That's what SHE said!

  • In the video at about 7:44 it looks like the neck pocket is chipped up quite a bit. Whats going on there?

  • @KilluhSoda The neck pocket is taped with masking tape, and there's color on it from shooting the burst. What you're seeing there is tape that's pulled away.

  • Hey, I'm first! (it says 0 views). Another excellent Sully video!
