  • "Suo Gân", as performed by James Rainbird and the Ambrosian Junior Choir directed by John McCarthy, is featured prominently in the film Empire of the Sun, where it is lip-synched by a young Christian Bale. It also appears, instrumentally, in the beginning of the movie Dutch. Here the Vienna Boys do it justice, as well.

  • this is the english version ?

  • While this is nice enough to listen to, I much prefer the original Welsh version.

  • King's College, Cambridge has the most perfect version and in the original Welsh language. On the other hand, there is a version by Charlotte Church who is actually Welsh.

  • that rendition has just blown me away what a way to beat a song and make it better listen to that more often

  • Beautiful, thank you for sharing.

  • Bendigedig.Maen hyfryd iawn.

  • godly

  • This is a powerful version...

  • Ever since hearing this song in the movie, "EMPIRE OF THE SUN", which is probably the finest war movie ever made, I've wanted to learn this song.

My own recording of it is posted on YOU TUBE, under my user name, "writesong".

This particular YOU TUBE recording has a problem with the sound.

To listen to it, I had to maximize the volume on both my computer and my television.

  • @writesong dont think there is anything wrong with the sound u done a really good job well done xx

  • @TheSmoggylad

    Thank you!

  • Those who are comparing this version to many others and know of a lot of choirs and are analyzing may not like this version. But to me, who hasnt heard tons of versions and choirs, I think this is the most beautiful song and I didn't even notice any flaws. All I heard was Suo Gan.

  • This song is sung in Welsh, the same way it was sung in "Empire of the Sun". People look at the name, Suo Gan, and listened and thought it was being sung in Japanese. It was sung the only way a Welsh lullaby should be sung, in Welsh. That is why it was so poignant of a moment in the movie. The boy singing a lullaby to his friend on his friend's journey to death.

  • I DARE NOT APPROACH WHILE HE REPOSES NEAR HER HEART.....

  • does anybody know the lyrics to this version?.. and not the english translation.. ^_^x

  • i cried on this movie

  • Iamdieing.. .

  • When times are Tough and Dark, a Song like this comes and You are saved, Even at the Feet of Hell........... with a Song like this, You can see a way Home. I Love you Jesus!

  • I enjoy this. Fabulous song; fabulous choir.

  • Ouch......that hurt my welsh ears !

  • Terrible! Badly sung and out of tune. Try Chanticleer's version - beautiful.

  • ah, private Catholic school brings back so many memories for me........

    .....uhh, NOTT!!!

  • I agree with the shrillness being out of keeping. Listen to Kings College Cambridge singing it in Welsh - with just the organ accompanying.

  • the welsh kings cambridge is so much better

  • Najładniejsze wykonanie jakie kiedykolwiek słyszałem tej pieknej walijskiej kołysanki. Absolutely perfect !!!

  • MAGNIFICENT, SUO GÂN, MY MUM WAS DYING AND LISTENIG TO THIS. tHANKS 4 POSTING. ALTHOUGH THE EMPIRE OF THE SUN CHOIR BOYS WAS TOO, TRULLY AMZING.

  • Well if you've ever seen the movie Empire of the Sun, this is the English version of Suo Gan. The foreign version is even more amazing. You can listen to it on Amazon from the Empire of the Sun soundtrack listening. I think they are amazing. Thank you for posting this.

  • i don't find welsh to be very foreign.

  • @gobluesocks I think you'll find this is the foreign version.

  • @gobluesocks It's Welsh, not foreign.

  • @gobluesocks You mean the WELSH version used in Empire of the Sun? :)

  • Stunning...

  • awesome

  • Ich denke, dass auch sie neue Wege beschreiten wie das jetzt alle anderen machen müssen.Mir selbst fällt manches auch schwer anzuhören aber sie werden daran lernen und vieles wird besser werden.

  • This choir sounds amazing. Thanks for posting!

  • very beautifull

  • its "Hunan" not "Huna" xx

  • No, it is "huna" which means "sleep". This version is rather shrill considering it's supposed to be a lullaby.

  • utterly beautiful. uplifting and sad at the same time. amazing.

  • I bet that's what it sounds like when a great person enters Heaven

  • stunning

  • Huna blentyn yn fy mynwes Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon; Breichiau mam sy'n dynn amdanat, Cariad mam sy dan fy mron; Ni cha' dim amharu'th gyntun, Ni wna undyn â thi gam; Huna'n dawel, annwyl blentyn, Huna'n fwyn ar fron dy fam. Huna'n dawel, heno, huna, Huna'n fwyn, y tlws ei lun; Pam yr wyt yn awr yn gwenu,
  • Gwenu'n dirion yn dy hun? Ai angylion fry sy'n gwenu, Arnat ti yn gwenu'n llon, Tithau'n gwenu'n ôl dan huno, Huno'n dawel ar fy mron? Paid ag ofni, dim ond deilen Gura, gura ar y ddôr; Paid ag ofni, ton fach unig Sua, sua ar lan y môr; Huna blentyn, nid oes yma Ddim i roddi iti fraw; Gwena'n dawel yn fy mynwes Ar yr engyl gwynion draw.
  • I'm a great fan of WSK and this is beautiful as well but in this instance I think Anthony Way is just the best

  • oh diolch yn fawn..

i've been looking for a vidio just like this

    so thank you very much

    god blss you..

    and stay safe!!

  • Beautiful but of course it is a bit much for a lullaby. Sleep my baby safe at my breast. Anthony Way or the opening of the movie are sung better. Ond diolch mae'n da iawn.

  • Beautiful background picture too, from WA Bouguereau

  • outstanding, love this choir. brings tears to my eyes.

  • Magnifique! Merci

  • very beatiful

  • I 'm not sure the language is Welsh .

  • It isn't. It is being sung in English.

  • @fengbo1984 It is welsh

  • @stripeycup

'sleep on mother's gentle breast' ..

it's the English translation of the welsh lullaby :)

  • @fengbo1984

Indeed. I think they're singing in (a kind of) English: it's very difficult to make out their words (!), but they seem to begin with "Sleep, my baby".

All the same, I do like the astringency of the choir's tone in this performance: it contrasts nicely with what could otherwise be the overly saccharine nature of this beautiful Welsh lullaby.

  • Very beautiful video, thank you very much.
