  • I agree with oceansagain71 very disrespectful we shud listen to our youth and understand clearly. Think they were saying our culture is lost and dying, that is far from being true. Mamy ppl stray but they always look for the path again. Thank to the youth who spoke so bravely you are courageous and many respects to you.

  • Niá:wen.

  • We have all lost our culture, even the white man use to live in tribes long ago. We need to go back to the land with no cars, no white man houses or any materialistic man made things, Now that would be called living traditionally, like I said...we have all lost it, we are all white men, we are all watching white man t.v. and living the white man way. We Are All Living A Lie. We honour the Great Spirit when we go to pow wows or when we want help. We should honour everyday all day long.

  • nice video, well at least your a positive person and your on the right track.

  • First 30 sec looks like the life of a traditional white man, wait, we are all white now.

I'll keep watching to see if anything changes in this video.

  • kwe Iohsennontion iontiats... im bear clan... whats the song playing in the background??

  • Is there manga in Mohawk out there? I would be really interested in seeing something like that and reading manga in the Mohawk language. It would def be a good idea because manga is pretty popular right now so I'm sure it would attract a lot of young people. It's nice to see young people embracing their culture and heritage. :)

  • Good video, but part of the time the singing prevents us from understanding what the kids are saying clearly.

  • My mother was raised as a non-traditonal and raised me as one aswell, but I am teaching myself as much as I can and will teach my children to be traditonals. I am a proud Tsalagi and Zapotec Native:)

  • All Natives must grow in numbers to keep the traditions alive, especially the language which must be taught from the moment of birth,

  • @purespirit9 There is only one language in the Spirit Worlds, and that language is... the language of the heart.

  • its always good to follow your roots because thats who you are.bless you.

  • I'm really glad you youth did this video. I can really relate to what you are going through. It is hard to live in the modern world and preserve your heritage at the same time. I got discriminated against too so I can totally relate to Ms Joseph. But I want to applaud you all for following the traditional way. Lots of Love and keep up what you're doing. I believe you're going in the right path.

  • Smoke weed

  • dont for gite hu u are .......pagan pride

  • I am a European and I find different cultures fascinating. It's so sad when I see people ashamed of their culture. I think Natives have an awesome culture from before white people and I would love to see that come back. In our generation, everyone is begining to look, talk, and act the same...I miss seeing the differences that make us unique.

  • this is a lovely done video! though it makes me sad that there are so many Haudenosaunee youth who dont want anything to do with their culture. I would give anything to be apart of the longhouse, but sadly there arent many mohawk in northern california. Actually its just my grandpa, mother, sibling and our relative Barney and his wife. We try and keep our culture alive as much as possible, but there is only so much you can do without your people. Keep the videos coming!

  • I'm Dutch. Stupid question.. aint Indians allowed to live they way they like? I loved to play indian at garden school. Have some bow and arrows... piew piew.

  • im navajo and this makes me sad for some reason lol

  • The natural way is for all man, black to white the shades in between are indigenous to earth. And earth intended for us to be balanced with it, we have lost that balance now and as time goes by the human spirit and love is being destroyed along with the soil beneath us. The spirit is alive, and is in connection with all natural life. One day we will see how it was intended to be, the natives have it right.

  • Awesome video.

  • I'm writing heavy metal (well, it's more like J-rock, but oh well) songs in Mohawk. Maybe if I can get something rolling with that, I could use it to make at least some of our culture attractive to the younger generation. Also creating a manga in Mohawk. ^_^ Gotta get the children's attention, right?

  • @Uwohilatlitigv thats interesting. but i think our own music and language has the spirituality that cant be expressed through heavy metal. although i do like heavy metal ;) and i have some friends that are makin their own manga too. i think a mohawk manga would be a good idea.

  • @skennen13 Might as well try though, right? :)

  • @Uwohilatlitigv That is awesome! I just told my daughter she should do Manga in Tsalagi!!

  • @OpaqueRegression I would buy it in a heartbeat. (My friend would have to translate for me though.) lol

  • Thats cool... I work for 2 things in my rez... the store and youths, i'm the assistant manager in the store and an co-ordinator for the youths. i also do small jobs around the rez like making bridges for the elders, just thought i'd let ya know most of us natives can keep traditional lives and regular lives at the same time, its just that we're on reserves and cannot practice our beliefs out on a street practicing how to play the drums and what not in a city... i actually like cities except for

  • is this at the akwesasne freedom school?

  • nice, my Aunt is Mohawk/Akwesasne (Wolf Clan) made me teary eyed watching this, the truth hurts. People just have to hold on to the things we love.

  • what is that song? where can i get it?

  • Its nice to see some other Natives out there keepin it traditional im Tuscarora,Blackfoot, and Algonquin

  • Nice To See People Showing Off Our N8tive Ways!!! BY The way im dakota sioux and pawnee!!! thnx for uploading this!!!

  • @DJayN8tive4life yea man thanks for your comment :)

  • I did the roof on that school. Whatever that means to anyone lol

  • @warner4455 it means alot man. thanks for your contribution to our community :)

  • many things you say, are for all young people! Having goals will always keep you on the right path.Knowing your tradition is a wonderful to pass on to your kids and theirs.Their identity! Perhaps you could record some of the elders, and make copies to archive! The internet is great for learning about others cultures, but it's from our elders we keep our heritage closer to facts. Thanks for being on positive path and sharing!

  • kinanaskomotinan for sharing this video. My heart was moved when I heard you all share your story. As a nehiyawiskwew (Cree Woman) from onicikiskwapowin Cree Nation located in Alberta, I am very proud of you young people for speaking your truth.

  • we should not let ourselves be clouded by negativity... negativity has its equal place in the world with positivity. when there is one who tries to do good, there will be one that will try to do bad. in the end it just goes to show that it is an attempt to make others feel as badly as they do. true strength comes with acceptance of your enemies as a way to show that you cannot be not be effected by acts of violence or harsh words, but with peace and respect will can prosper.

  • 4:05 if i was there he wouldve shut his mouth....id shut that whole situation down a bay area raised native with pride is sumthin to be respected fa real

  • Mohawk Pride!! shout out to my beautiful mohawk women and children....and shoutout to my strong mohawk men..we are not drowning victims we were meant to swim....peace luv

  • to woodss3, I advise you - still keep respect when talking to others - that shows most of what you believe in !

  • If ur afraid of a boys out burst, imagine being on a team full of natives and going to another school with bleachers full of non natives yelling at you calling u and ur team drunk and lazy ndn's, hitting pots and pans, and patting their hands over their mouths. Even when the game was over and they had won, they continued the harrassment by breaking our back school bus windows and meeting up with us on the highway in another vehicle cussing us out, mooning us, and throwing food at our bus.

  • stating that one should pay taxes should have the student punished? Perhaps integrating and embracing society will reduces or stop differences

  • If most Natives today did this like the way these Mohawk kids do, Turtle Island wouldn't have the problems like it does. Remember .... Ottawa's bureaucrats in Indian Affairs are always coming up with ways to take Indians away from their language and culture. It's an ongoing thing. Natives just have to keep on preservering, that's all.

  • you girls are beautiful for doing this :) makes me happy to see us young native youth having a voice. wo'-lhaw - thank you

  • I used to be a young person haha but i used to drink quite heavily when i was a youngin'....i've been raised traditionally by my family (Ojibwe, Bear Clan) and the difference between living traditional and the drinking lifestyle is I don't wake up with hangovers! lol Just like a drunk can't wait for his/her next drink I can't wait for next ceremony or powwow...it makes me feel good...and I learn a lot every single time...you dont learn anything when you drink all the time!! :)

  • I sincerely believe Native Americans should have their own schools with their own curriculum apart from the Canadian education system. Only native teachers running these schools. Please stay away from Christianity look what Christianity did to your ancestors. Christians are wolves in sheep clothes.

  • @MyHealingSoul You have no understanding of Christianity. There are countless people that have sacrificed their family, their wealth, their secular future, and their lives in the name of helping others through Christ. The few people (VAST VAST MINORITY) that exploit others in the name of God is grossly overstated and an exception- not the norm. If one wants an Indian school system- they can pay for it themselves like any other private school.

  • @woodss3 You are the one who has not knowledge of Christianity not me. The Torah and the New Testament are the source of all human suffering. The bible as a whole is a hate literature, a blue print for genocide and discrimination. The god of the bible is a tyrant if was in the power of the god of the bible we would all be destroyed, thanks to the great sprite for every thing. The god of the bible has been put to shame.

  • @MyHealingSoul then you're reading & understanding a different Bible than me. As said, I know MANY people personally and in history who have focused their lives on the priniciples of Christ and devote their lives to giving, serving, helping, feeding, sheltering strangers. People who use God for evil are evil- not God. The few teachers that use their rank and power in schools to hurt are evil- that doesn't mean ALL teachers are evil and education is bad. It is the exception. The same for God

  • @woodss3 Christians are wolves in sheep skin cloths. A Christians good will actions should never be trusted. The god of the bible is not the same Great Sprit who created everything and is in everything. The God of the Bible is a tyrant. The god of the bible is a hater a genocide maniac full of destruction. The god of the bible is a racist who promotes destruction and discrimination. Christians, Jews and Muslims should never be trusted. Where every Christian went death and destruction follows.

  • @MyHealingSoul I'll remember wolves in sheeps' clothes when I am thinking of Mother Teresa who gave her life to Christ by helping others. Or, perhaps I'll remember to sneer when I read about William Wilberforce, who as an Evangelical Christian, was motivated to stop slavery in England. Maybe I should shake my head when I think about the Christian motivated 'Undergound Rail' that saved US slaves in Canada...those are a FEW famous ones.

  • @MyHealingSoul (cont2). My Church sent a team to Uganda Monday to build a school and provide medical services. They personally paid for their own expenses and are leaving their homes and families for 4 months to serve in the name of Christ. Last year my friend's church funded a hospital in Tanzania to assist fellow human beings because they were moved by the Holy Spirit.....There are COUNTLESS NON-PROFIT Christian organizations in this world that assist because of Gods loving will.

  • @MyHealingSoul (cont3) Instead of blaming God for peoples' injustice and finding excuses to blame God, you should open your eyes and see the incalcuable good and love that has been done by God through people.God is about faith, service, and forgiveness. But people forget and feel that God needs to fit our purposes- this is wrong. We are here for his purposes and glory- not ours.

  • @woodss3 You stupid mother fucker, I am not blaming God for people wrong doing. I am putting down the god of the bible The Great Sprit and the god of the bible are not the same; you get it you stupid mother fucker!

  • @MyHealingSoul God in the Bible is the only god. A great spirit is a state of mind

  • @MyHealingSoul Anyways.....if you want to act uncivilized and need to swear like that- that reflects on you. If you think that natives should have schools taught by natives....fine! ...But not with my tax dollars. As far as I'm concerned, that is the same as me getting your tax dollars (do you pay taxes?) to fund a Christian school or another private school.

  • to woodss3, I advise you - still keep respect when talking to others - that shows most of what you believe in !

  • I wake up with a smudge thank the creator for another day... Good to see our medicine still burns strong

  • pleae keep that up....preserve your culture= live , your own language

  • you go kids, keep it up! you are special!

  • I'm mostly white, and American. I love America for it's melting pot and cultural diversity.

But I realized most European, African, Asian, Latino, and others have their culture represented wholeheartedly, forever in their ancestral homelands.

But Native North American people, and other aboriginal have to work hard and sometimes sacrifice their liberty to keep their language and traditional heritage represented in the world, let-alone their own community.

That fact hit me like an epiphany.

    -b-

  • Man, I am impressed by these kids.

They have a great burden to learn all they can, for the grandchildren of those who care not to learn traditional ways.

The old ones pass everyday, and the old-ways MUST be saved for the grandchildren who want to learn.

This reminds me of the pain a caregiver suffers when taking care of a sick and disabled family member. There is a powerful scene of responsibility to give care, all the while others are going about their lives oblivious to the power of love.

  • Ancient traditions are truly the way. It's not too late for us to transition back to the ways that our life was nurtured and raised on.

Good to see that people are making this connection, especially in their youth.

  • I am a lakota Sicangi from Rosebud Indian Rez in South central South Dakota. Born and raised traditional. I know from experience its kinda hard to be traditional minded in this modern world. But as long as you don't let your book education effect your old original traditional teachings. think Indian some say. Utilize the education you recieve at school. But you must never forget the teachings of our people. Never let western way of thinking interfere with your traditional morals.

  • I think teachers who are going to be in a school where there is Native children. Should know about traditional beliefs and or have native teacher's that understand the children.

  • Yes -to all young of any culture, creed, of religion, stay away from drugs.

  • Ho! Keep it alive! Peace and prosperity to you there in the East!

  • Wow looks like im not alone i been traditional for 5 yrs now,im from the NWT i go to sweats, ceremonies,Sundances! keep it up :)

  • i like your video so since your tradional like do you go to powwows and stuff....... hello. my name is johnnie antonio and im a "navajo". do you spaek your language fluencly hahaha......... and im from the "bear-clan" ............and what culture do you come from......... "dine-pride"......... stay real........

  • your lucky u have some traditional ppl we dont..... half of out ppl remain then we had long time ago but most dont even speak so....pritty bad shapy but where doing ok... oh yeah how sung that song if it u. ur a pritty good singer

  • Well im sure there is probably at least a few people left there that carry out their our old traditions, and language. You never know until you find out. The song in the background song was called the Baby Song, and it was written by my spirit auntie Bear Fox but this recording is sung by a member of Bear's women's singing society named Teioswathe i think. lol I do sing myself but i dont like to record myself really, unless its for learning or teaching purposes.

  • @skennen13 my best friend is a non-traditional mohawk living in Ft Covington,NY on the reservation.. he can speak mohawk fluently.

  • Nya:wen ko:wa continue to fight the good fight its a tough path but it rewards it makes my heart real huge watching this and the young people following the REAL ways :) almost cried felt the tears a coming lol.

continue to follow the Great Law and always allow the Peace to keep you safe love your people and protect them.

memeber of the Seneca nation of the Heron Clan

  • I'm Asian too and I also like Native culture. I live in east coast where there's hardly any natives. From all other utube videos I saw, it seems there's lots of discrimination against them which is very sad.

  • Thats good to hear you have interest in our culture, our culture is about connectedness and peace, so EVERYONE should be interested. lol but yes there is alot of discrimination, becuase for every thing that is real, there is a thing opposite that tries to bring it down. Our people have gone through alot , and is still going through alot of struggle today but we are strong people and will sustain. There is alot of positive to look at today, and i think thats what we should all be focusing on. :)

  • I hope I live to see Native Americans get back what was taken from them.

  • @UnakaWaholi: Well, that would require the United States government giving us back all of our Native Lands (which will only be by bloodshed and the help of God)- including to the Hawaiians- my White Ancestors would have to see their posterity put on the reservations, instead of the rightful owners of the land- the government of the past stole these lands from my Native Fathers, Mothers and Children- but God will give these lands back to the descendants of my Native Parents- I guarantee it.

  • Alcohol and drugs is not indigenous to America, its the whites curse so let whites partake of their own curse. Keep up the good work to revive your culture and the aboriginal way of life. If the foreigners to North America dont like to see indigenous people living their way of life to hell with them. Please do not assimilate with the foreigners and stay away from foreign religions; your spirituality is natural and pure and not the man made things of the other religions of the world. Good luck!

  • Like SarahRosehawk said more and more young people should be interested in their culture.Keep up the good work.

  • I grew up traditional. I loved it, best way to live. Wished i could go back to that lifestyle. Its hard when you live in the cities and all there are, are powwows to gather at.

  • Great to see, thanks for sharing. Keep your focus, it is very important for those to come that the threads to the old ways aren't broken.

  • I'm Black, and I see the condition of Native people, and it makes me MAD. Where are the young Native Warriors?!

I see the injustice in the laws against y'all and it is enraging beyond words. I ask myself why ain't there any radical revolutionaries in the Native nations; at least on youtube?

I see "modern" Native kids where I am talking down against their own culture and ways with white ppl. They are ashamed!

Take your land and freedom BACK!

  • that is nice to say, but you haven't been.. paying attention? look at the american indian movement, and the mohawk nations, and then see what happens when you try to fight the government..

  • @FinalRenaissance im native and black and i will never talk down about my native culture becuase the language and the happiness i feel wen i dance and speak of our culture i feel pride, being part black i celebrate some of it but my grandmother and mother are mostly in my life and they are very into our native culture becuase my mom's side is native

  • Well I'm glad for people like you. I hope you keep on going strong in that way. Keep learning about your true history and I would advise you to learn about your (true) Black history as well.

I feel like in this society our true essences of Black and Native are being eroded to the point that in a generation or two, we won't know anything about ourselves. We're being programmed to perpetuated white culture, attitude & mentality & completely forget our own. It's ASSIMILATION.

    It's a bad thing.

  • 4:41. I LOVE IT! They're breakn it down!

  • Skennen I am Seneca/Cayuga and have always wanted to go to the longhouse just been fighting overseas in Army since September 11th. My mom is from Cattaraugus, NY. I'd like to meet you. My father is Dine' Navajo from Arizona.

  • this is the most beautiful video i've seen...seriously...im NATIVE n me n my cuz jus the other day were talkin bout the very things u speak of...keep up wat ur doin...we also have been tryin to keep close to our culture...i jus had to comment cuz dis is more den deep...

  • This is a Fantastic young Lady!

All Native Youth should take a lesson from her! She is really With it!

  • I will tell you one thing. WE can dance. Good vid. :D

  • A traditional person talks the talk and walks the

    walk.There a many "great pretenders" out there,so

we must stay clear of negative influences.Learn

all you can while you can! Blessings and Peace

    to All!

  • Its profound and beautiful to see our youth regaining the ways of they're foremothers and fathers. Stand tall and proud always. Its not that being a "modern girl" its being europeanized. Always keep in mind our spirituality, values, and morality is Strength!!! The Mexica always got ur back just let me know if anyone gives u problems Traditinoal and proud.

  • Wonderful. Our beauty of our young ones are reclaiming their roots. Much respects.

  • I'm Polish and really fond of Native American culture. You're such proud people and I admire this.

You've fought an unequal battle rather than become enslaved - you can be proud of yourselves, your culture is very precious!

  • I totally agree. A very rich culture steeped in generations of tradition and yes, they should be proud. For a time, they lost they're way but the path has been found again. As always, one path ends so that another may begin..

  • @snuffles1111 i been to a pow wow in katowice i like how polish dancer will mix the two cultures some laugh i thinks its awesome.

  • I'm Asian and I love Native American people and culture! It's sad that there's none in my school.... =(

  • wow really. thats very interesting cuz im interested in other cultures too, and asian culture is one of them. im fascinated in learning about people from other countries and cultures as well. =)

  • @lovemyangel2007 u rawk! <3

  • Those dances look like a lot of fun to do! Nice video!

  • Native Americans have been through so much. It's good to see younge native americans participate in their own culture and stay away from drugs an alcohol.

  • Not cool, spstyles! Not cool at all. Its words and attitudes like yours that cause stress, strain and misunderstandings where none should be. skennen posted this to give all an opportunity to gain some insight into the lives of natives still living according to their culture. Maybe your mind was elsewhere but I'd suggest you watch it again and learn something.

  • Keep your traditions strong! The modern way of life is just living but other then that the language, the dances, songs, prayers, native foods, ceremonies, stories, games, etc. should never die. It is not just your tribe who faces this...as a whole we are many across the United States. Keep your heads up and be proud of who you are.

  • do native americans get along with mexican or do they hate them like white people ???

  • you think natives are all prejudice or something?

  • do natives own casino's? and if so why are so many people poor? oh and do you date outside your race?

  • use your head woman. i know you have brains, are you that ignorant enough to think that about an entire race of people? you really think we are all just racist, broke, uptight native people...?

  • @skennen13 Right, Tina. No racism can be good. As a white European, away from consumerist abusive culture, I am sometimes hurt by the hatred some other people have for my skin-colour. Thank you for your very nice video, I hope more young people can find their way home. You are a good example. You can call me Ken:reks.

  • I truly hope native american culture is around for a great many generations. There is much will be lost if their varied cultures were to vanish into the mists of time.

  • The girl that we first see in the video has beautiful eyes and hair

  • Nyaweh

  • io. niawen to you too

  • This video is amazing, and makes me proud. The song behind it is also breathtaking - where can I find it?

  • It's awsome that girls are trying to keep their culture. It should attract the guys who seems to not care. Must be hard though to keep your native language when the first language you learned was English.

  • true that. it is tough. but im doing what i can... niawen for the comment. :)

  • *****

  • Native women in the present are making visible efforts to renew traditions and to improve education, through self rule and by healing from within the culture itself. There is a strong effort being made by Native Women to improve their futures as well as to improve the futures of their children, spouses and the rest of the world. This traditional Native teachings is very mentor for the rest of the world to learn because that is the only teaching to save us all from biospheric and social destruction.

  • Nice to see some youth are keeping traditional ways. You set a great example for others!!

  • It's great to see the culture has hope because some of the kids today will carry it on with them to pass on.

  • Great lessons to be learned by our young Native people in this video. Nyaweh! :-)

  • awesome sister, Our indigenous culture whatever it may be is the only thing that can keep us free in this world of control and confusion. Our ancestors had many gifts they left us language, values and protocols, we got a proverb that goes something like. What is the greatest gift in the world...it is people...it is people ...it is people. A maori from new zealand

  • Great video!!!

    tc onen!

  • Awsome video!

  • niawen :)

  • sego, my fathers family is from akwesasne, i do what i can to be traditional, but the language went with my father when he passed away,,,,skennen13 do all you can do to learn,,dont be like me and not take the time to learn,i am full of regret nya-weh O:nen ki wahi

  • Niawen Koa for sharing, I have recently begun my new life of sobriety, and I am trying to learn my culture. Keep spreading the word!

  • Kwe Kwe, Nice film. Keep on learning. The song and the voice are beautiful:She:Kon...

    O:nen.

  • h0ka.. Niawen! Wela'lin! i know the feeling of being a traditional youth in todays modern society. Im Mi'kmaq from Nova Scotia, and from my community there isn't much traditional people, at that youth. Im sober all my life and i know its been tough. learning your language is most important, im 21 and i'm fluent in Mi'kmaq because my parents taught me well. Videos like this are inspiring. I go to sweats and ceremonies, and sometimes im the only one there that is under 40, but its the life i chose

  • that is awesome, im so happy that there are those that can relate with me, and its a good feeling when our people start supporting each other :)

  • thank you for sharing your life with us.

  • whoever said it was just about singing and dancing? you should learn all the facts before you go around giving advice....

  • awesome young women! NEVER forget your culture..no one should. Sadly few care.but there are enough to make a change and you show that.Never let people take who you are ..its all any of us has

  • Actually I'm of "white" European Descent...

I'm not native, but have a deep respect for the plight of all natives everywhere on our planet. The history of ignorance and greed that has lead to the decline of these cultures.

That they can be valuable in their contribution to our culture in the wealth of natural knowledge and social wisdom's the possess.

  • It would be a great tragedy and sin to see a culture die. I applaud the efforts to keep indigenous cultures alive, and encourage all who would to follow the steps of their ancestors.

  • Niawen kowa, thank you for the appreciation! i am truly grateful for support from our people!! keep you the good work!!

  • This video makes me proud, we will never loose our culture and traditions. These young people will teach their children and it will continue in that way. thanks for sharing , Lilah

  • Thanks for sharing this video. keep your hearts strong ok and on the good side of things. Toksa. John

  • I seeing the young people going back to their culture. I don't like it being called traditional, i.e. not sure if our ancestors sat around and said "Hey you traditional?"

That's just a dumb pet peeve of mine, but hey its good to see the young ones walking in a good way!!!

  • WOOT WOOT!

    lol go tina and brittany!

see you guys at the longhouse sumtime =]

    i'm loving the video too..

alot of youngings our age really dont realize that it IS up to us to learn our culture and keep it strong for when we are adults it can be passed on to our kids! =]

    YOU'S ROCK! lol =]

  • This is great! Its good to see native youth showing a revival in the traditional ways!

  • Kwah tsi yoyanere ki:ken tina!!! this is very good tina. konnoronhkwa tahnon kwah tsi wakatshenon:ni tsi niyoht sonnontonnyon. I love you and it makes me happy the way that you think. Nia:wen
