  • sorry about your mom steve :(

  • I have never heard something this cool sounding ever. I am speechless.

  • This so great, you are such a inspiration too me i love your music, and your guitar playing you have touched my soul, and i love you, and all your wild music notes keep up the great work.

  • whoa! damn i stepped in shit 11:24 LOL

  • Sounds like early 20th century atonal composition...Berg, Webern etc.

  • What's playing from 3:14 to 3:30??? This is so awesome.

  • Love to play on one of your compositions!

  • Somewhere around 13:50 I'm pretty sure Bugs Bunny was getting chased by Marvin Martian

  • Compose more melodic and accessible stuff or loose me as a listener.

  • @wwwYecom bye :).

  • @wwwYecom Stop being so righteous

  • I am sorry about your mom, Steve. My condolences. I send you wishes of comfort and wish you the best.

    Sincerely,

    Razwell

  • 5:19, looks just like Steve!

Steve, you are now in the Mozart, Beethoven league.

  • Devin's definitely had an influence on you, man. In due time too, I'm not sure anyone can be as bizarre as Infinity.

  • @DaveDragon1985 I'm hearing more Zappa than Townsend here.

  • How'd it go Steve? The Rach 3 huh? that's pretty crazy to go before, maybe the greatest most difficult, most romantic composition ever created...no pressure.

  • Hey Steve ! The 80´s called and they want the glases back :)

  • Steve can you speak french ? On the score of Harp cadenza there is written " Laisser vibrer "

(let vibrate). Is the Harpist French ? Just wondering.Thank you for this great video and even greater music !!

  • is this going to be release on any cd?

  • Makes me forget who einstein was

  • hey someone knows the program steve is using in the minute 12:24

  • @meminzone Looks like Finale Notepad.

  • Grat stuff. Some parts made me think, that norman bates is standing beside my shower :-)

  • So, not only is Steve Vai an amazing guitarist who inspires me to want to be like him, he's also one of the most unique contemporary (or really from any time period) composer I've heard... I wanna be Steve Vai when I grow up, mom!

  • WOW, Steve and his Mom look so much alike!

  • Was it recorded?

  • Steve is way more than just a guitarist!

  • rollin a fatty @ 1:54?

  • Steve Vaiyou are one of my idols , I admire you deeply as a more than just a guitarist , you are a composer and a very perserverant person

  • Sorry to hear about your mother's passing and that it took me so long to find out. My most sincere condolensces. Thanks for the music.

  • planet of the fucking apes

  • hi Steve! Martin from Argentina, please sory for my english, did you wrote the guitar solos in the paper to? how you transporte all this music in a live performance, keep rocking man, we wait for you in Argentina! Regards!!

  • Hey everyone (and Steve), check out stuff by Tyondai Braxton (who is the son of Anthony Braxton, some famous jazz guy?)... he was in the crazy-innovative band BATTLES [but left last year] and put out a "classical" record last year that is fun and wild. He's another unique music genius. Watching this video reminded me of Tyondai's "classical" CD. I forget the name but it's GREAT and enjoyable to people who don't "like" classical music.

  • Hey Steve, my sweet 16 is coming up... In july. It's based basically on you, live in donnington will be on the tv and some Steve Vai on the sterio... I was hoping, even though it probably won't happen, if you could stop by.. I can't afford a jem. But I have an rg, and it would make my life if you signed it. Please get back to me man.

  • sweet wind from orange county sounds like the only thing of his that I would genuinely enjoy. I respect his work and his story, but only from a distance. That piece that plays as he's describing it as his first compostion (i assume they are the same) is very appealing. I wonder if there's somewhere I can hear the whole thing.

  • The glasses are not "nerdy". Search Youtube for "Rapist Glasses" :p

  • every kind of steves music corporation is welcome. god plays JEM!

  • I was going to leave a comment about how talented you are. However, I'll just say that 11:24 is the hardest I have laughed in a long time!!! And yes, you are talented, sir!

  • Hey folks, Peter North here.

  • @DMB206 HAHAHAHHAHAH

  • Steve has the neatest hand-written notation I've ever seen.

  • Frank Zappa would be proud of you !You are a wonderful musican !!

  • you are awesome. Every bit of it. love the ending with the 3 notes.... :)

  • A+ to whoever edited this video together, that must have been a bitch.

  • Music is amazing and you are amazing!!

  • Steve, if you are able please transcribe vivaldi's four seasons on guitar!!!! I've done it myself and it's awesome!!! Especially the winter part!!!!!

  • I cannot wait to hear this piece.

I am so proud of you, Steve.

I find it fitting that your work is being played along with Stravinsky and Rachmaninov (esp. Piano Concert No. 3!!!). Jaya!

You've been inspiring the hell out of me for 25 years now. I cannot physically play the guitar right now...but you and Jason (Becker) continue to inspire me to keep writing.

    And studying. And listening.

You keep writing- I'll keep listening,

    Bhakti Brophy

    "Ocean Moon Sky Vai"

  • I described the first chord of my "Open Letter to Steve Vai" video as sounding like "an electric ham sandwich" haha!

  • Im happy to tell my future children and to my grand children how great you are

  • Steve, this music is beautiful. It's a very special treat to see your process, and these funny little private moments! You positively inspire many many people, and that's sometimes an even greater gift than your music (and sense of humour!). Just, thank you. Crispin

  • Master Zappa's former Jazz from Hell freakish compositional attitude coming to mind. Not that it's inspired or similar, but it comes to mind. You're such an inspiration Steve, to us all, musicians. I hope you haven't come to realize you've done it all on the guitar already, because that wouldn’t only be a shame, but a lie as well. ;)

    Keep up buddy

    Francis Mann

  • GENIUS !!!

i would LOVE to see . STEVE VAI and JORDAN RUDESS in a project

  • R E S P E C T !!!

  • Thanks for sharing this Steve!

  • Maestro te admiro! :D

    saludos desde mexico

    bye

  • @MetalHeart8787 It's all just a matter of taste. I didn't like some stuff that Zappa wrote when I first heard it, but that was because he was so over my head it took me years to sort of halfway understand what he was saying and appreciate it. The first time I heard The Black Page I thought, "WTF, was that noise?"

  • @skimam I wasn't talking about people who smoke pot and/or have dropped acid. I was talking about those who were hooked on and eventually OD'd on heroin, coke and pills. That is what I meant by, "who dies way before his time."

  • who are you teaching now ?

  • @skimam you'r an idiot... if you think that everyone should try drugs you r a fuck*ng moron... save the world and kill yourself...

  • watchingfrom 11 onwards makes me think it's a trailer for a nutter whos talking to himself. I LOVE STEVE VAI ...iT PUTS THE MUSIC IN OUR HEADS OR IT GETS THE HOSE AGAIN.

  • Steve's level of guitar is beyond our imagination... to the point where I cant understand his work.

  • pleaaase, give us subtitles!

  • Yes!

  • Steve. You are the ones that inspire me. To play the guitar. And you just keep amazing me. I would love to see you soon on stage. I am amazed at your abilities. We hope you will create a work out.

  • Steve, i saw now so much of your videos, but in this you're not smiling at the beginning...

    Everything right?

  • You are an alien man!!!! awesomee!!!! you are, to me, the best guitar player in the universe!!!

  • You're the best, Steve..

  • haha those eye glasses are definitely the antithesis to your look in '85. My how you've grown up, love this work Steve, every new adventure is as fun to explore as the last!

  • very cool - example from 7.20 is SO jazz in hell-era Zappa! Gotta love it

  • Quite animated! kinda reminds me of a back ground sound track to one of those cartoons we all grew up on. almost an altered states meets fantasia! as usual genius work. would be great to set it to some artistic animation!

  • ??

    Je suis partagé.....mmmm.

Franck aurait surement aimé cette musique ou y retrouve un peu ses traces.

    On est loin de Juice.

Je préfère quand tu joues de la guitare.

  • i I admire to Steve because it makes a fabulous job and I've always wanted to do the same.I play guitar for 25 years, and music is my passion, aside from the paint.

I waiting ansiously any work of Steve Vai..... thanks.

  • Steve , so great, And still Zappa influeneced. Beautiful!

  • The snippet that starts at 7:16 sounds kinda vaguely reminiscent of Ghouls n Ghosts on the Genesis. Very cool.

  • @mindsaber It does indeed! One of my favourite games ever! Ahh, they don't do 'em like that anymore, eh?

  • dig that glasses))

  • Six people are dumb enough to know who Steve is, go through 16 minutes of video and expect anything other than this?? Jesus... sorry to hear bout your momma, Steve. Peace. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • Very, Very, Very, Cool

  • I'm sorry to hear of your mom's passing.

  • Wow Steve Vai!. you really brought out the Zappa in you!, with a spice of the awesome Vai Vibe™ ... I know... I know... Just let me be, yes? haha...

  • @Obliaxe its called vaibe lol

  • ill be honest. you're a weird motherfucker. great music, though.

  • This sounds like the musical interpretation of 1Thes. 4:17 Steve. Where all believers are gather'd together circumambient around the Lord in cloudiness. Like Israel in the wilderness around the tent of meet (the tabernacle of God) Can't wait to hear it all together. {searching it out today} Peace bro.

  • ahhh Stevie Vai gotta love him "I just stepped in shit" :D

  • A very 80's sci-fi feel. The guy loves his era very much. I wonder how it would sound like with real orchestra.

  • I was there in Drachten. It was simply beautiful! thank you Steve, for being an inspiration not only musically but also personally. Your music got me through times i needed it!

  • You have your mum's smile

  • Starting to look like an OLD MAN !

  • WOW! Thanks for the peek into the mind of a genuis! Fascinating! I LOVE the whole concept about any place being the center of the whole universe!!!

"The Middle of Everywhere" Far out!!

  • Another Masterpiece, like everything this man do!

  • no no no steve it's banal your last job, you can do it, 10 times better,

  • Nice and cool, but what about "Real Illusions Vol.2" ? Part One is now already 7 Years ago, i guess most fans would be more glad about a new album !!

  • I can Hear Frank! :)

  • I was at the performance of 'The Middle of Everywhere' yesterday, it sounded so much better with the real orchestra than the computergenerated piece in this video. Thank you Steve for this wonderfull piece of music!

  • Love these update videos!!

    RIP SV's Fan :(

  • 4 People likes hip hop.

  • @ozzystereo Nothing wrong with liking Hip Hop...it's a booming culture that has saved many lives - including mine. Don't be on that commercial shit, ain't a good judgement of Hip Hop. I like Hip Hop and Steve Vai...:)

  • Steve in the Middle!

  • steve vai is a master!!!!! thank you! and thank you frank zappa!

  • I think Frank Zappa's spirit has manifested itself into Steve's work. And that's AWSOME!

  • Thank you, Steve, for not being one of those drug addicted geniuses (like so many artists we have known) who dies way before his time. Your work keeps getting better and better every year and we deeply appreciate what you do.

  • @pcs56 Steve is a hair dye genius.

  • @pcs56 I also Respect steve for not being a dumb Drug adtic.

but i will say his CDs / Music is not getting Better & better.

I like his music & he knows what he is doing musically BUT it gets Boring sometimes.

you think this piece/Music is better than the stuff off the first 2 Roth solo lps?

I don't think so. Flexable & P&WF 1990 are way better than this.

  • Were not worthy....

  • Eu sabia que tinha um segredo ainda não revelado!

  • theory in itself baffles me, I've hardly scratched the surface with it in my playing, this dude is a killer

  • @flanzashreddah The theory should be in your head NOT in your playing!

The sound of theory is not very musical!

Music theory is like the mathematics of musical tones and rhythms, and should always be used with great meaning and conviction!

Music Theory is not something you need to make great music, but it is a good tool to be able to (see what you hear) and then have the ability to analyze and develop your music!

Do not be afraid of the theory just dig in to it and have fun with it!

  • Bernstein and Zappa would be very proud, Steve! You are their love child! lol You share the same musical DNA. Awesome work... all the best x

  • @VanishingRock I was just about to write "Zappa would be proud" but you beat me to it . :)

  • I know a guy who writes music similar to this. You should be able to find him on myspace under Steve Hart.

  • u have beautiful glasses vai, ur so talented and you go beyond guitar playing, you compose BUT yes, you are the best guitar player. bless u!

  • That's today!

  • is this a joke

  • LOL My father actually needs to play this with the NNO this week

  • \O/ Is TOday !!!

I Want SO Much be there in Holland to see this COmposition !!!

    :( Damn Lucky Guys !!!

  • That is a very cool video and a great look into the mind of Steve Vai so to speak.lol...Computer generation does help quite abit when composing a complexed piece of music like this for sure.Loved the ending of it to finally hear and to read some of the writing.Cheers!

  • what happened to finale?

  • /watch?v=QA9rIzMj7e8

  • Amazng!

  • 6:53 Mr Vai on the beatbox! :P

  • ''That Steve Vai, what a nice little boy''

  • sorry to here about your mom

  • @bsascottish hear*

  • a whole composer in work! you are my idol Steve!

  • nice haircut steve

  • rock on steve

  • i think this its the first attempt of a few mistakes every person makes when its experimenting with something new, i really dont like what ive heard in this vid, but im open to surprises.-

  • Wow that's some beautiful insanity going on there, love it

  • dammit steve i was supposed to be sleeping or doing my english work for school but now im watching you and wanting to pick up my guitar and study musical theory! (thanks tho its alot more fun than doing anything else :P)

  • When i heard the song, i remember that Mr. Vai is getting closer to Leo Brower, lots of disharmonic notes. But, well, interesting. Mr. Vai not become only a rock guitarist, but also become a new progressive composser. Good job, Mr. Vai!!. Keep rock on...

  • I see a lot of Zappa influence in this song. He'd be proud of you Steve.

  • One of my many favorites, is "For The Love Of God". Simply phenomenal!! :D
