I think Alan Wilder was better musician than Gore. If you see, best Depeche Mode albums were made wih Wilder: Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, Violator, Songs of faith... And the worst Depeche Mode albums without him: Ultra, Exciter, Playing the angel...

I personally love Playing the angel and Exciter more than any of their older albums cause these two were the ones that got me into them. And Ultra is a wonderful album too. SOTU is not an easy one, it needs some time, but I start to really like it. :)
