Still my favorite band of all time but I think America ruined them. Why do the Yanks always do that? And why do we let them? Seems everytime we get something great we send it to America, they piss on it and send it back broken. At least our actors are taken seriously over there but I wish they'd stop ruining our rock bands (and racehorses).
Suze DeMachi is the all time godess of Australian rock'n'roll and the band was lightning in a bottle.
How did Americans so-called "ruined" B.A? Do tell. Groups, bands, soloist, ect. just happen to do good/better and certain/other county(ies). That don't mean they're "ruined".
Specifically, what I mean is that in spite of doing very well with concerts, thus proving they had more than sufficient appeal to the American audience the Baby Animals were destroyed commercially by the mismanagement of their American record label, Imago. This is not a new thing, it happens to a lot of Australian bands that go over there (probably the majority). I'll cite Cold Chisel and Spiderbait (Chisel in particularly, and *there's* an interesting story) as similar examples.
Imago? Never heard of them, but that's besides the point...I understand your point, how you typed they were " ruined" over here. Vica Versa can be said. Umm, of the top of my head P!nk does better in Australia then she do here. Some acts that are from the U S of A happen to well in Japan (just to name a country). Maybe Americans just didn't like them as well as Australians. STILL doesn't mean they were "ruined" just not well receive :D.
Once again, they played a *lot* of concerts, both with Van Hallen and on their own and more than proved that American audienced *loved* them, as did every other audience that saw them.
You've never heard of Imago becuase they folded not long after the tour. However, the nature of the (American) music industry is that the record company basicly *owns* any bands signed to them, such that no other label can get a look in. This ownership continues even if the label folds.
The depredations of the American music industry are not news, Courtney Love was particularly vocal about their monopolistic, gangster like practicies (and then she went insane; funny timing that).
Add to these normal anti-creative, purely for profit, gangster practices the fact that an Australian band is operating far from their usual contacts and support base and you can see how a band can be "ruined" for no reason other than the whim of some suit who had a bad day.
Bad (and good) people are all over the world. They just got a very bad deal with some greedy, money hungry people, which are all over the world also. HA! Courtney Love, just HA.
Sure there are good and bad people everywhere, in fact there are probably lots of good people in the American music industry. Problem is, it's not about the people, it's the system, which chews good people up and spits them out. It's no more than random chance if a band actually runs the gauntlet, talent and originality has nothing to do with it.
What makes it worse is that you've got all the money, so we *have* to come to you, even if we *know* you're just going to screw us.
This going back and forth is pointless. You're going to continue to type (say) American so-called "ruined" them... so-freaking-be-it. OKAY... America "ruined" them. Happy?
Suzi got married and after that the band came second basically, their back togther at the moment touring around Australia, which is sweet seeing them on 20th of Jan at the Prince of Wales in Melbourne check out the myspace
i have to say though, they could have been massive, they were so close, not mention they're like ghost now, hardly anyone remembers them. talk about them, u can;t even find the albums any more
The first 2 albums are re-mastered and in stores on the 19 JAN 08 and available on itunes and other digital outlets,,along with new Acoustic(LIBERATION) record of the hits re recorded...very earthy, dreamy feel about it...when you listen to it,just go with it and enjoy the journey.
The reason they stopped gigging is the record company they were signed to went belly up but apparently they were tied into a long term contract that did not allow them to sign elsewhere and they were stuck!! Doesn't sound legal, however this is what I've read.
Suze & Nuno - best compare of energy!
