Diana has a kind of elasticity that I find incredible. She would seem to employ aspects of her body in movement that I just have not seen elsewhere. A nimbleness, a remarkable flexibility. I saw her do this in Three Point Turn in The Beauty in Motion series. Rubies, as well. A true master.
WONDERFUL ! BEST CARMEN EVER ! Her version is better than Alberto Alonso's one and she dances Carmen MUCH BETTER than Maya Pliseskaya or Alicia Alonso, with more character !
She has the spanish style. She's so skinny and very young (18 years old)... With dancing that variation she won the Lausanne Price (1994).
@dancer4freakinlife that's true, but to me every great dancer and every great company has a certain something that sets them apart from others, french dancers are incredibly moving and can handle contemporary and classical repertoire incredibly well. What I meant from my comment was that Russian prima ballerinas are easily identifiable because they are extremely regal. I love Diana as much as I love french Aurelie, or English Darcy. Keep dancing!
i know i did this in the past but i really think everyone should stop focusing on the people's weight and see the dancing. the emotion and character expressed by a 16 year old is unprecedented.
She is flexible alright, but that is supposed to be an asset and not label her as a gymnast. She is doing a Spanish dance as spicing it up to the exact degree without making it look cheesey. It is very entertaining to watch IMHO. Plus, she is only 18, in general ballet dancers do not achieve their artistic maturity until later.
I saw her live yeasterdag, she's now dancing with teh national ballet of Holland and she was great! It was Giselle, she wasn't in the rol of giselle, cause that was Igone de jong, but she also did a great performance!
Hmm, are you sure it was Vishneva you saw dancing with National Ballet of Holland a month ago? Because she's actually in New York dancing with ABT and has been here for some time. I saw her perform as 'Sylvia' last Wednesday.
You are wrong. Diana Vishneva graduated from the Vaganova Academy /Mariinsky in St Petersburg) with the highest grade EVER! And she won this competition, of course.
The fact that she graduated in the Marinsky with the highest grade ever doesn't mean that she's an artist. That only evidences the decadency of the Marinsky. She produces a great impact because she puts her leg against her ears and she dominates the scene but that doesn't mean that she's able to create beauty or to move the emotions of the people who's watching.
Anyone who has seen Vishneva dance 'Giselle' in recent years can attest that she IS a ballet dancer, and a great one (even if she's not your personal cup of tea). She's an international star and one of the most respected dancers in the world. This video is fifteen years old (although she won the Gold Medal at the Prix de Lausanne, from which this video is taken. Another Gold Medal has not been given out to ANYONE since.).
This is astounding... Her legs and arms don't even look like they're body parts. They're like streamers she can manipulate into pretty patterns. I think I understand ballet now.
The BALLET Carmen was first performed 1967,the music being the Carmen Suite by Bizet-Shchedrin and choreography by Alberto Alonso for Maya Plisetskaya. You can,t get the Russians and their culture out of this!
Sorry this is not a cultural thing this is about a story set in Spain, and if you 're going to dance it then dance it like the Spanish would put aside the Russian influence as it does not belong there!
To the extent that by replacing the Russian style to the Spanish would have given credence to its performance that it truly was indeed Carmen by Bizet. Unless, of course, it was composed to interpret a different version.
In response to your reply to me gastonlegrand your comments have me truly nonplussed.
The idea is to perform it as close to the style of its origin. Some dancers master the art while other's give it there own style as is the case here. Russian style dancing is not far from Spanish as they have some similarities. Yet, I'm being critical because this is too Russian for a Spanish dance! Spanish style dancing is fun and coquettish here I see more of the Folklore dance style.

It's not Vishneva's fault some russian teacher thinking he or she was Petipa came up with this garbage to show off her legs. She should have done the CAN-CAN.
she's only 18 in this video?! holy cow. i wish i could dance like that. my mom swears up and down i begged to quit ballet when i was a kid...but im inclined not to believe her. :/
Que pequeña q está Diana acá. No sé quien le habrá puesto esa coreografía pero no tiene nada que ver con Carmen. Coincido en que parece un número de gimnasia rítmica. No hay necesidad de levantar las piernas todo el tiempo para ser buena
I agree she has beautiful extensions but her style is a bit too Russian this is a Spanish dance, she adds more of her Russian flair to it, with very little of the Spanish to show for.
Carmen is a Russian ballet created in the Spanish style, in the Bolshoi by the composer/conductor husband of Maya in about 1954,for his wife. Of course it has a RUSSIAN flavour!
I must correct the above. The ballet was created by Alberto Alonso in 1967 for Maya and then her husband did further work on the music: thus there is a strong Russian connection. When danced by Alicia, in Cuba, then it does seem Spanish. When danced by Russian ballerinas then the Russian flavour comes over. I don't think we have to be critical about this.
Carmen is a French Opera, with ballet in it. Created by the great composer George Bizet, in the era of Romanticism, it was first performed in Paris, France in 1875. A year later the Austrian's performed it as a ballet then it went on to Italy. The story is set in Seville, Spain, into the lives of Spanish gypsies; thereby it is far from being Russian. Dancing the Spanish style of gypsies is where the artistry of the dancer comes in.
She is not in the New York City Ballet but in ABT. And what do you mean she is almost to end her career? At 31??? The career of a dancer is already short enough, don't make it shorter than it already is. She is a star now but maybe she still has some time ahead until she gets at the very top of her career. And we will enjoy her dance for many years to come, thank god. She is fabulous! :)
i'm sure he meant in the american way where if a dancer is passed 30 she/he should retire. they like the baby dancers.... the younger the better .... thank god for living in Europe!!!!
