  • Beautiful girl, good moves but no feeling for the music tempo!

  • Diana has a kind of elasticity that I find incredible. She would seem to employ aspects of her body in movement that I just have not seen elsewhere. A nimbleness, a remarkable flexibility. I saw her do this in Three Point Turn in The Beauty in Motion series. Rubies, as well. A true master.

  • If you search for "vaimusic Carmen Plisetskaya" you will see some commentary mentioning Alberto Alonso as the choreographer

  • Anyone knows who created this choreographic version?

  • Pure class! Gives me goosebumps EVERY time I watch it :)

  • sexy is something else.carmen ?

  • PERFECTION.

  • She perfectly captures the fluidity and feistiness of Carmen - BRILLIANT DANCING! :)

  • I WANT HER BODY

  • My friend has the exact same body as her it makes me so mad! GAH!

  • title of prima well deserved! :)

  • I WANT THOSE LEGS!!!

  • She takes my breath away...

  • she is the highest ranking student ever in the Vaganova Academy, and this is why.

  • AMAZING

  • This performance won her a gold medal.

  • charming

  • Why do Russian students not compete in the Prix de Lausanne anymore??

  • WONDERFUL ! BEST CARMEN EVER ! Her version is better than Alberto Alonso's one and she dances Carmen MUCH BETTER than Maya Pliseskaya or Alicia Alonso, with more character !

She has the spanish style. She's so skinny and very young (18 years old)... With dancing that variation she won the Lausanne Price (1994).

Wonderful Diana. Best carmen ever !

  • No ballerina can rival a Russian dancer's attitude on stage

  • @01103mv That's not true, there are plenty of wonderful dancers not from Russia with even more attitude than Russian dancers.

  • @dancer4freakinlife that's true, but to me every great dancer and every great company has a certain something that sets them apart from others, french dancers are incredibly moving and can handle contemporary and classical repertoire incredibly well. What I meant from my comment was that Russian prima ballerinas are easily identifiable because they are extremely regal. I love Diana as much as I love french Aurelie, or English Darcy. Keep dancing!

  • when anyone else does this variation its boring, when she does it its pure magic

  • Best carmen EVER! Amazing stage presence.

  • Her jumps are amazing, I love the choreography, and it's amazing how she commands the stage even though she's just a teen!

  • this is perfect... It's hard to believe she was only a student then...

    did she win the prix??

  • lol the comments here are the exact opposite of what they're saying on her coppelia variation...:p

  • Every inch of her--even the energy around her--is perfectly placed at every moment. Brilliant! The best Carmen in history.

  • i dont even know what to say

  • the best carmen of them all... ballet isn all about extending ur legs but having the character as well.

  • i know i did this in the past but i really think everyone should stop focusing on the people's weight and see the dancing. the emotion and character expressed by a 16 year old is unprecedented.

  • I loved it beautifully danced !!! But for my liking.... too skinny. I was kind of distracted by that...

  • BRAVISSOMO

  • wow very refreshing. the variations danced today are all the same. i can't remember anyone dancing carmen in the past years!

  • what variation of carmen is this?

  • Wow she's good, but really really skinny. Does anyone know how old she is here?

  • @gamgeegirl87 If it's 1994 so she was 18.

  • gymnastic...also she is very beautiful...but gymnastic in this variation....

  • She is very good, but no Carmen...

  • She is flexible alright, but that is supposed to be an asset and not label her as a gymnast. She is doing a Spanish dance as spicing it up to the exact degree without making it look cheesey. It is very entertaining to watch IMHO. Plus, she is only 18, in general ballet dancers do not achieve their artistic maturity until later.

  • Que lindo!

  • i was 2 yrs old when i saw this and i started dancing ballet 'cause of her :)

  • wow,, keep going.

  • so thin

  • hot

  • whoah thats great. What kind of ballet is this? It seems more spiced up lol. but i like it? Or is it not different, just different music?

  • Well this is from Carmen- a Spanish ballet.

  • Beautiful!!

  • i would kill for all of that

  • damnn i want her legs

  • i was just thinking the same thing.

  • @fooitstinazheng oh hell yeah, i would kill for her legs!!! its amazing!!!

  • I saw her live yeasterdag, she's now dancing with teh national ballet of Holland and she was great! It was Giselle, she wasn't in the rol of giselle, cause that was Igone de jong, but she also did a great performance!

  • Hmm, are you sure it was Vishneva you saw dancing with National Ballet of Holland a month ago? Because she's actually in New York dancing with ABT and has been here for some time. I saw her perform as 'Sylvia' last Wednesday.

  • Oh, so that's where she is!

wonder when she'll be back in nyc.

  • Her performance was so matured as her age...

I can't believe that she was teenager at that time.

  • so loooong legs!!!!!!:))lovely dance

  • Awesome! She does the variation perfectly!

  • UH-MAY-ZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She is 18.

  • how old was she in this vid?

  • she was 17

  • amazing!

  • she like a olimpic gimnastic girl but not a ballet dancer.. Sorry for my english.

  • You are wrong. Diana Vishneva graduated from the Vaganova Academy /Mariinsky in St Petersburg) with the highest grade EVER! And she won this competition, of course.

  • The fact that she graduated in the Marinsky with the highest grade ever doesn't mean that she's an artist. That only evidences the decadency of the Marinsky. She produces a great impact because she puts her leg against her ears and she dominates the scene but that doesn't mean that she's able to create beauty or to move the emotions of the people who's watching.

    I agree with etoilenora.

  • I agree as well, the technique is impeccable, but nothing makes me want to keep watching her. It is like there is no passion behind it.

  • All od this is based on opinions, of course, but I thought the expression was great.

  • Anyone who has seen Vishneva dance 'Giselle' in recent years can attest that she IS a ballet dancer, and a great one (even if she's not your personal cup of tea). She's an international star and one of the most respected dancers in the world. This video is fifteen years old (although she won the Gold Medal at the Prix de Lausanne, from which this video is taken. Another Gold Medal has not been given out to ANYONE since.).

  • wowie wow.

  • This is astounding... Her legs and arms don't even look like they're body parts. They're like streamers she can manipulate into pretty patterns. I think I understand ballet now.

  • wow!!!

  • there goes my self-esteem...

  • I absolutely love it ;)

  • oh my golllllllllllld!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful!!!

  • Wow, she's so good in this role, especially considering how young she is, I think it requires a lot of maturity, and she dances it sooo well!

  • Diana Vishneva is one of the leggiest ballerinas I have ever seen.

  • OMG amazing her legs look a trillion miles long here

  • Wonderful!!!

  • great

  • Does someone know who is the coreographer of this coreography????

Qualcuno sa di chi è questa coreografia???

  • This solo was created especially for her by the artistic director of the Academy Igor Belsky.

  • Thank you very much.... I love her and I love how she dances!!!

Grazie mille...

  • SHE has some pretty long lags there, she is amazing.

  • The BALLET Carmen was first performed 1967,the music being the Carmen Suite by Bizet-Shchedrin and choreography by Alberto Alonso for Maya Plisetskaya. You can,t get the Russians and their culture out of this!

  • Sorry this is not a cultural thing this is about a story set in Spain, and if you 're going to dance it then dance it like the Spanish would put aside the Russian influence as it does not belong there!

  • To the extent that by replacing the Russian style to the Spanish would have given credence to its performance that it truly was indeed Carmen by Bizet. Unless, of course, it was composed to interpret a different version.

In response to your reply to me gastonlegrand your comments have me truly nonplussed.

  • The idea is to perform it as close to the style of its origin. Some dancers master the art while other's give it there own style as is the case here. Russian style dancing is not far from Spanish as they have some similarities. Yet, I'm being critical because this is too Russian for a Spanish dance! Spanish style dancing is fun and coquettish here I see more of the Folklore dance style.

  • wow ahw iS SO amazing and skinny...

  • This is strange. Yet very pretty. I'm not quite sure if I like it or not.

  • I love this variation, it's so different from all the others!:P

  • she's really so good but i prefer her in don quixote

  • i love it... it's kind of strange, but i really love it

  • I don't find the song anywhere. can you help me?

  • Itunes has it if u search carmen. I just bought it

  • she's only 18 in this video?! holy cow. i wish i could dance like that. my mom swears up and down i begged to quit ballet when i was a kid...but im inclined not to believe her. :/

  • I agree she has beautiful extensions but her style is a bit too Russian this is a Spanish dance, she adds more of her Russian flair to it, with very little of the Spanish to show for.

  • Carmen is a Russian ballet created in the Spanish style, in the Bolshoi by the composer/conductor husband of Maya in about 1954,for his wife. Of course it has a RUSSIAN flavour!

  • I must correct the above. The ballet was created by Alberto Alonso in 1967 for Maya and then her husband did further work on the music: thus there is a strong Russian connection. When danced by Alicia, in Cuba, then it does seem Spanish. When danced by Russian ballerinas then the Russian flavour comes over. I don't think we have to be critical about this.

  • Carmen is a French Opera, with ballet in it. Created by the great composer George Bizet, in the era of Romanticism, it was first performed in Paris, France in 1875. A year later the Austrian's performed it as a ballet then it went on to Italy. The story is set in Seville, Spain, into the lives of Spanish gypsies; thereby it is far from being Russian. Dancing the Spanish style of gypsies is where the artistry of the dancer comes in.

  • burabo----!!

    love

  • She is just 18 years old on this video

  • she's amazing!!!

  • Please tell me how old she is

    Where did she train

Did she win in any competitions

She is so so so good!!

Love her body so good for classical ballet and her extensions WOW!!!!!!!!!! wish I had those.......

  • vishneva. ru

  • She was born in July 1976

  • she has such beautiful extention!

    ~Peace and Love Forever~

  • shes amazing! does anyone know the name of the video this came from? id like to see the interview with her after the dance. thanks! = )

  • i dont think she retired, if we are talkin' bout the same diana vishneva, i think she's principal with the ABT. If im wrong someone correct me.

  • You're right. She did not retire and was just profiled in the Times, early July,as someone whose career is very ongoing.

  • UNBELIEVABLE!!!

  • whhoooaaaa

  • she is very good !!

  • she has the most beautiful ballet body...absolutely stunning =)

  • She is amazing, and she was only eighteen!!!

  • she's actually still in the mariinsky, she dances with abt over the summer

  • she's my idol...i met her 2 summers ago after seeing her in an abt show and asked her for her pointe shoes...just amazing

  • did she give them to you?!that would be awesome if she did!

  • yea she did and signed them too and was so nice about it!

  • speechless

  • She is not in the New York City Ballet but in ABT. And what do you mean she is almost to end her career? At 31??? The career of a dancer is already short enough, don't make it shorter than it already is. She is a star now but maybe she still has some time ahead until she gets at the very top of her career. And we will enjoy her dance for many years to come, thank god. She is fabulous! :)

  • i'm sure he meant in the american way where if a dancer is passed 30 she/he should retire. they like the baby dancers.... the younger the better .... thank god for living in Europe!!!!

  • Not all dancers carreers are that short. Look at Patricia Barker. I remember getting the nutcrack on VHS for Christmas back in 1985, and I believed she just retired, although the PNB website says she's still a principal. I'm not sure. But a lot of dancers fo on for a while

  • Yes she did just retire. i live in seattle and see some PNB performances and got a postcard for her farewell performance

  • if she only knew where those gorgeous legs were gonna take her in a few years...

  • :-) WOW!
