  • espace is amazing car

  • pause at that 1:31

  • My dad had a mach 1 discovery.

  • Take a Q5, the results changes ;)

  • Strange how they like to crash test new Renault cars against older cars where the Renault always comes off on top.

  • @wannabemedic Well, look at the ammount of money you have to pay for a car.

  • Damn those legs...

  • Well good thing I knwo my Subaru has a 5 star safety rating and was one of the first cars ever to ahve 5 stars! makes me sleep well knowing if something happens I will proabably walk away!

  • that's the passenger side, not the driver side

  • that's not a real 4wd anyway

  • Yes that's all very well but a new disco would also have absorbed the crash mr man....

  • Skip to 1:20 to begin of run

  • its escape ispase!

  • Crash starts at 1:22

  • 1:27 thats not nice

  • Crash starts at 1:30

  • MAYBE THE DISCOVERY IS 10 (TEN) YEARS OLDER THAN THE ESPACE???

that's why is unsafer, not because is a 4x4 with a stiffer chassis blah blah blah...

  • Well, I have a Bronco, which would act like the Discovery in this, so... damn.

  • ether way ur gonna be fucked up nuff said diddnt need this video to tell me that

  • don't use french cars in crash test's they can't take a thing....

  • unfair, very old disco and the espace is much dearer

  • id rather die in a Land Rover than live in a Renault

  • @counterclockwise123 Saying this line on every video?

  • @ExoticlyExtreme it applies to both videos

for some reason it seems id always rather have the car id be killed in lol

  • Comment removed

  • Well no shit!!! The discovery is like from 1998 and the MPV is almost brand new. Of course, the MPV is going to win. It was obviously an unfair test.

  • @chickenman5755 not really, a new 4x4 is a lot more than the renault so parents would opt for a second hand one or a renault

  • @chickenman5755 Well, think about it. Thats how a real life crash would be on any road at any time anywhere. Old car vs New car. Happens almost every time.

  • Save yourself some time: skip to 1:20

  • Stupid right hands drivers

  • Espace is known the be one of the safest family car around...I can already expect the result. If only it will cheaper to operate in my country...maintenance cost is crazy here.

  • First time seeing this show, but are already bored with this after a minute.. Fuck this, top gear FTW!!

  • It was Discoverys fault.

  • All this video proves is that newer vehicles are built with more new safety features than older vehicles (as it should be), not that SUV's are less safe than other vehicles as a whole. Recent SUV's have been upgraded with all the lastest safety features found in other recent vehicles, thus continue to outperform most other recent vehicles in vehicle-to-vehicle crash tests. Likewise, older SUV's still outperform smaller vehicles & similar in such tests.

  • i vote for the 4x4 because if there stupid enough to get hit in a head on collision they probly should be dead anyways and the 4x4 is the better choice for stupid drivers

plus the years on these dont match up so of course there gonna be different

  • Mid to late 90's car vs. a late model car. How is that a fair test. Plus you may as well have a bullbar on the 4b.

  • @nerdcunt69

How is this not a fair crash test? Its not for a crash rating. In the real world an automobile accident is versus different makes, models, and years. If they were using this for a crash rating then yes I would agrue that this isnt a fair test.

  • @nerdcunt69 the point is to show people who think that "they don't make them like they used too" that a newer car performs better than an old loved 4x4 or volvo... people think that new cars are made of plastic while old ones are made of steel which is totally wrong:)

  • @kingeddy137 Yeah I guess you have a point. I kind of thought that was a given though. People are pretty stupid these days though

  • when they crashed the minivan like cought on fire

    1:35-1:36

  • @loodabeast huh?!

  • @loodabeast that is just the extra coolant in the airbag, renault tend to put more in

  • thats so stupid!!!

look when the two cars are build!!!

    just .... :)

  • wtf on 1:35

  • yea, i suppose is just for the high velocity impact, all the energy got concentrated and this area become really hot!

  • no at all valid, and very unfair, why not do it against a new discovery 3? not an old discovery without airbags...

  • well of couse putting it up against something as tough as a minivan

  • Land Rover: FAIL!!

  • Because there was an explosion in it... the airbag is deployed by explosives

  • looks like in the espace there was an explosion at 1:36!

  • Why not simply admit that the Espace is safer? Even if the Landrover gives a "safer impression".

  • Why do not simply admit, that renault built the safest cars in the world? What they do! All Cars Star Maximum at crash tests and allways testwinner.

  • You are absolutely right, they invest a lot in the car's structure and yet the cars are not that expensive.

  • you say it. my dad go a espace (08) and my mom a megane convertible turbo (09). Great cars, and that's the 5th espace for my dad, he just loves the space in that car.

  • this test is completley inaccurate, the discovery was designed in 89 and first introduced in 91 and this is a series 1 the espcae is post 2000, alas not a fair test, maybe if they tested a 4x4 the same age as the espace then the results would be more clear and the 4x4 would win.

  • I disagree. This is a very valid test. It replicates reality on the road. There are plenty of early Discoverys and new Espaces on the roads. I worked at the Land Rover factory performing safety test sign-offs on the Discovery prior to its 1989 launch. It is important that people realise that new cars are much more safe than old cars. This test is an eye opener and busts the myth that 4x4s are safe in a crash. And my daily driver is a 1994 4x4.

  • The turnout shocked me. Im gonna stick with my 80's monte ss. built like a tank.

  • a lamborghini gallardo will give you similar fuel consumption but gives you 553hp. and that coming out of a 5.2 litre engine.

i believe GM should be looking at downsizing their engines and using forced induction. its good to see they are heading in the right direction with the ZR1. if they were to add a 4 wheel drive system to the next corvette range that would be a lethal machine.

  • Comment removed

  • But I love taking my jeep into the countryside and watching fresh wild cattle spew blood when the black tar gas leaks from my exaust into their naive lungs causing serious and fatal damage lol

  • well first off that lil kid in the back of the reno was killed, snapped neck EASY, and fifth gear allways test old cars against new ones FUCK OF FIFTH GEAR AND GIVE TOP GEAR SOME ROOM

  • This is so biased it's not even funny. That Land Rover is obviously much older than the MPV. The Land Rover doesn't even have airbags. Why don't they try the same year models and put them in a crash test? Because the 4x4 will win. I hit a telephone pole head-on in a 4x4 and walked away (I swerved to miss another accident). If I had been in a car or crossover I prolly wouldn't have been so lucky. Word.

  • lol canyonero ftw

  • But not every MPV is as safe as Renult and not every SUV is as wimpy as Land Rover Discovery. Try this with a Hummer and look how it bounces the MPV off.

  • it would depend on which model of hummer. the H1 would smash anything, but the H2 and H3 are made by GM and are not very safe considering their size and weight.

  • 1996 Landrover Discovery: 3 stars

    2005 Hummer H3: 5 stars

2005 Hummer H2: Couldn't find any record of the crash test results, but here's what I found:

    watch?v=6g1tR0Y8vzU

    Read the description.

Now I'm not saying you'd be safe in these cars, because the deceleration is far greater than a car that crumples easier and that deceleration will break your neck. But as far as durability goes....that's durability right there.

  • durability and safety are two different things.

a fiat 500 out performs both the H2 & H3 in a euro ncap safety test, considering the size and weight of these vehicles that is pathetic.

the durability of GM cars is pathetic, i am glad that they went bankrupt and had to sell of some of their brands. finally its good to see SAAB back in the hands of the swedes, but since im australian it was sad to hear that our own HOLDEN is still part of GM as it was the only company making a profit!

  • GM is still the top selling company in America.

And if you read my comment closely, I said the same thing. Durability doesn't equal safety.

Hummer is not as safe as it is durable, eventhough according to IIHS it's safety isn't all that bad.

I'm disappointed that you guys aren't enjoying our LS3s as much as we'd hope. We do like your Holdens with our LS3s, though.

  • there are many reasons why GM V8 engines are going the way of the dinosaur in australia. because they are very archaic in their design as an engine, the basic design of the engine has not changed in over 60 years. many other manufacturers can produce more power & better fuel economy with a smaller displacement engine. GM engines just seem to be getting larger with every new generation of LS engines.

  • I dunno about that. You find me a 505hp car that can get 24mpg (that's American mpg...its about 27 british, 9.8l/100 km) on the highway. Because the LS7 Corvette can.

The displacement isn't a problem because the output is good and the cars are rather efficient because they don't need forced induction and have a ton of low end toque.

  • also the LS1 engines we got in australia also had many problems with piston ring clearance, which that did some damage to the reputation of the engine.

  • sum tyms 4x4's roll just after impacked cos of its higher center of gravity so il stick to a car thanks lol

  • Because dicks who drive older chelsea tractors belive they are invicible! The mpv has hammered that school run shite.

  • Holy crap when I was 16 I was involved in a head on crash just like this one I was a passenger and it hit my side of the front at highway speeds and I walked away with only bursed ribs..........and I was in a MPV

  • At 0:18 what is the the device stuck to the wheel used for?

  • it's the rig to pull the vehicle... (Cable attached to it. see 1:18)

  • of course youll be safe in the mpv, its newer than the 4x4. why not get two cars with the same safety standards rather than throwing up this useless bs here

  • I was thinking the same thing.

  • Is there an engine in the Discovery?

  • you blind or what?

  • Calm down, just a question...

  • a la verga

  • is it an explosion 1:34

  • its the airbag. if its a explosion... idk.

  • yeah looked like it

  • Why didn't they use a more modern 4x4? It's quite obvious the older safety features on the Disco would be surpassed by those on the Espace.

Surely it would be fairer to crash cars of similar age...

  • i'd rather be in a tank

  • New cars are designsed for the frontal offset crash test, and that included the latest 4WD's. Its all good news in that new cars are getting safer. Rear end crash tests should be next including having solid lumps of timber int he back.

  • crash the fucking thing already

  • I'd rather be in a hummer.

  • I'd rather be in HMMV

  • I'd rather be in a Audi Q7

  • lol, you idiots worried by the flames, its a small explosive they use in airbags that inflates them so quick. nothing unusual. its why theyre warm after an accident.

  • Whiplash and air bag of Doom (Fire)

  • Is not for nothing if Renault is the car more sure in EUrope !

  • What I want to see is a vehicle that you can DRIVE HOME after a crash like that.

  • KITT

u can crash like 1000 times

    no scratch or so what

  • 1:36.. airbag with a ball of fire.. not an usual thing...

  • That isnt a fireball buddy, thats the dummy.. and it's "A usual thing" not an usual thing

  • that fucking renault espace was the new one why can't they got older version

  • The problem with accident is the energy that is releasd. Roughly it's (impact = weight X speed.)So The heaviest has more chance to push the other car aside. This increases the time/distance in which it comes to a stop. Result: less G-forces for the people inside leading to theoretical less injury. (This is what airbags do) ONE PROBLEM. the energy released in a big crash is so massive that the car's structure will collaps, crushing everybody inside. At the moment French cars are the strongest

  • Dude, are you gonna put this shit on all crash test vid comments? try the yellow pages under L for life.

  • wow wow wow stay at 1:35, 1:36, and 1:37... you can see flames comming out from the left car omg.

  • Comment removed

  • "wow wow wow stay at 1:35, 1:36, and 1:37... you can see flames comming out from the left car omg. "

    That's the airbag, I guess.

  • there will be flames come out if the airbags go out?

  • There's no point in worrying bout Co2 emmisions and green credentials on 4x4s, people don't really give that much of a shit, I thought I did until I bought a Jimny the other day, it guzzles and spews out filth from it's exhaust lol..but it does it with style, I ll let my grandkids worry about the future. most of us will be dead by the time the shit hits the fan x

  • ignorant fuck. destroy shit cuase YOU Wont be here? BUT fuck everyone after you, becuase your a lazy ignorant fuck who is apparently not responsible for your own actions.... Good thing the laws refers to you as a "human being"... sinful bastard! Go fuck yourself

  • u dick.

  • if NCAP safety ratings are so important i guess noones going to buy a car of under 5*s which means every cars going to have to become 5*s, why not just get people to become better drivers.

  • i think both models should be the member of the same model year!

  • I guess so but then agan what are the odds when you have a crash that you'll hit a car of the same model & year?

  • These tests reflect crashes at speeds which cars normally do and no one can predict what two cars will collide. So there are random variables. And these tests are somewhat of a wake up to people.

  • Id rather be in a Nissan Armada

  • no it only has a *** euro ncap safety rating!

  • Why destroy a car like a New Renault that works perfectly? I think it is a waste of money!

  • Renault is loving it. I think renault provided that car.

  • they do that to see how your car would act in a collision

  • such studies may save your live

  • no one wanted it and it is to proove that rumors about being safe in a 4x4 simply arnt true. it also helps people to buy cars as they think they will be safe in a crash.

    (and they are!)

  • Isn't there like a 10 year difference in the age of these vehicles.

I'd like to see if LR has improved over the years.

I'd like to see an 03 Discovery or something in one of these tests.

  • agressive cupholder..... nice

    lmao

  • there on the wrong side of the road

  • in the espass i saw something orange

  • think that was the charge going off to deploy its air bag

  • Am I the only one to notice the Disco's airbag did not deploy? This vid is a real eye opener...I've always thought my '95 Disco was a bit more crash worthy than that...

  • hi we are a small car rental company of which we run renault espace and last year one hit a chntraL RESERVATION ON THE M25 WITH 2 NEW BORN BABIES (WHICH WERE SLEEPING AT THEE TIME) EITHER SIDE.

THE FUNNY THING IS THAT THE CAR WAS WRITTEN OFF BUT THE BABIES WERE STILL ASLEEP!

  • this sucks a comparison b/w 1998 model Discovery and 2005 espace they should do it with the same models then it would be fair and i'm pretty sure that the discovery would be more safe

  • The thing is, you can afford these cars with a same budget. It says that you have to buy a second hand modern car than an old steel-builded tank.

The new discovery would be safe and the driver wouldn't be dead, but the renault would still be the same.

  • The Renault wouldn't still be the same. The new Discovery is much stiffer than the old one. It would have caused alot more damage to the Espace. The result would have been very different. Apart from being sronger, the new Discovery weighs in at 2.5 tonnes; you can't beat physics.

  • lol the kids dead.

  • I agree that u should be able to drive what you want. One of the problems in the US with 4x4's & SUV is that people don't know how to use them right. Take a Ford Excursion, for example. Many people in the US that live in changing climates buy these for snow travel but most don't understand that the 4wd will move fine, the 6,000+ lbs. of the SUV can't stop when you are going 50mph in deep snow. People over correct, on dry road, causing rollover. Drive what u want, learn how to control it first.

  • Totally agreed. Too many idiot schoolmums I see driving their BMW X5's like they were Smart cars.

  • um that rover was old too ya know...

  • why has this youtube video been commented on by a bunch of communists? People should have a right to drive what ever car they like. End of. My Dad owns a Land Rover Defender, but he brought it because he needed a 4X4 as he now lives out in the country (Roply).

  • He use it offroad then I guess he needs it.

Also your argument people should have the right to drive whatever they like is valid but 4x4 are very dangerous vehicles on the roads and I have the right to not get killed by someone driving a unsafe vehicle. Thats like saying I have the right to drive at whatever speed I like.

  • Yes, i agree. These days people drive these new SUV's (which are fake 4X4's as they are not being designed to go off the road e.g: bmw x5) on the school run and driving them like morons.

  • What rubbish, people don't and never will have the right to drive what ever they want. there are millions of regulations, and they are based on safety and soon on enviromental impact.

Get used to it, its here already.

  • Your right, the DB7/Esprit shapes are now ellgal to sell new in America because they need to be safer for pedastrians and even people not wearing seatbelts.

  • Your right, the DB7/Esprit shapes are now ellgal to sell new in America because they need to be safer for pedastrians and even people not wearing seatbelts.

  • Might I point out that if you go to any small community town (not one with all the second homes) in the South West all the locals drive little cars, because they are easier to get up hills, safer and cheaper to run

  • I dont see why people feel the need to own a 4x4 in the inner city suburbs when the vehicle clearly will never see off road use.

The real 4x4 enthusiasts that enjoy offroading cop so much flack because of it. 4x4's should be banned from inner city driving.

  • i fully agree

recent 4x4 cars only make the road unsafer for other drivers

and they pollute much more and are completely useless in the city

  • some people need 4x4, well not necessarily 4x4 but a truck, like farmers for example. But all the city people dont need big trucks.

  • Thats funny the airbags in the landrover didnt deploy.

  • look at the age difference between the cars, try the test again but use cars from the same year of manufacure.

  • REALLY CRAP LAME & OH SO BORING TOP GEAR WANABEE show.

And that tool of a needle is so in love with himself, and nobody can figure out why. Yawn Yawn Yawn.

  • if top gear is my main course fifth gear will b my dessert

  • if i come in there i'll skelp both your arses

  • yeah fith gear is a cheap copy of top gear

  • completely UNFAIR test, test a Brand new 4x4 against a brand new MPV, or an old 4x4 against an old MPV to make it fair. People who are against 4x4s are fukin worthless to society, and are very unintelligent and uneducated! and should get a life!

  • 4x4 are br00tal

  • thing is that reaults quite a new car and a really high saftey rating, I

  • fukin hate 4x4's

  • you are aprick

  • Why, because he has an opinion..?

  • You're an idiot. You know that, right..?

  • I might be an idiot but you are definately a prick, but you know that don't you, prick

  • I like my Isuzu Trooper and like being a 4X4 driver, but don't want to be thought of as a mindless, ignorant wanker. So iandeville, will you please stop posting your pathetic drivel.

  • cushdy another Trooper owner

  • Isuzu Troopers are specifically designed for pricks so at least you bought the right car !

  • Yes you're right iandeville , I do have a prick. Clearly you don't. (by the way, you're user name is really GAY!)

  • you haven't even spelt it right you faggott ! Why don't you buy a real 4X4 !

    You big gay twat.

  • Do you honestly imagine anybody is interested in how to spell your limp-wristed,frenchy name. Especially when you can't even spell faggot. You know you don't have the intellect, wit or command of language to compete with me so don't even try. I am now going to stop this exchange between us because you are boring and inadequate.

  • yes you big gay tosser, probably best you stop now, a 'man' of 52 should have a bit of a lie down and try to remember what it was like to do stuff and not just sit on his old, well buggered arse typing shite that no one is interested in reading. Bye bye glyn don't drop dead to soon I'll miss you.

  • im glad that the renalut won because 4x4 are economoly sh*t. the chuck out so much co2.

  • you are also a prick and you can't even spell !! ha ha

  • Another one jumping on the band wagon...

  • I used to find it hard to believe that the average IQ is somewhere around 100. From reading the comments on these videos I would have to say that number is correct. Congratulations.

  • The whole test is such a load of rubbish. Of course the Renault is going to come off better. It's a new car with the latest crash technology against a car that's 10 years old. Lets see a the same test with the Renault against a new Dicscovery that weighs 2.7 tons and also has the latest crash technology. I think we all know what the out come would be. Everyone in the renault would be DEAD.

  • yawn - have a look at ncap and see which bits of you get mangled in a disco 3. ouch. renault espace is simply one of the safest cars on the road and outperforms pretty much anything else out there. check the facts.

  • here here !!!!

  • NCAP, wot a laod of shit that is! I'd rather be in a big brand new Shogun than some poncy french Espace, you cretin

  • ok, you cretin.

  • fuk u, u couldn't think of ur own insult then? probably too un educated to think of one.
