In my opinion Trent and Daria should have never actually been together, but neither should she have been together with Tom. The Tom character ruined the show for me as he did for you. It's just that I think it should have always stayed the way it was; Daria hoping something would happen between Trent and herself, but nothing ever would really, just kind of, like with the piercing thing.

PS. Totally digging Trent's voice.

@Turksemployee I didn't have a problem with Tom that much either. The only thing I had the issue over was the fact he was Jane's ex. Yeah, made for great dialogue between Daria and Jane, but god what an awkward way to get your first boyfriend.

In a way, I always did think Daria would get back with Trent. He was dead beat for the first few seasons, but toward the last ones I loved him.

Daria dating Tom just made her look like a horrible best friend to Jane and a total contradiction to her character on the show. Sure, Trent wasn't dependable and in a lot of ways there wasn't much there other than chemistry but that's more I can say for Trent than Tom any day. Daria College Life, let's make that happen. Who knows, College parties always need a good band.

P.S. The only setback of bringing the show back is that it's a 90s teenage grunge hit TV show, and we're two decades past..

Sigh... I actually really think Daria and Trent could've had something there. I mean... hypothetically of course (it is an animated fictional series after all). It was when he was supposed to help Daria and Jane with an assignment or something and he didn't and so Daria kinda stopped having any faith in him, and the kiss kinda signified the end of whatever it was they had. I have to say, it actually makes me feel really sad to see scenes with Daria and Trent, despite the fact that its just a freaking cartoon.

I really do wish that there was much more between them than just the small hints, but I think the creators decided to not pair them up because it was supposed to be like real life Everybody has a Daria or a Trent in their lives. That one person who would always be the "what if?".

it's funny, Daria always felt happy and SMILED more when around Trent and actually enjoyed his conversations, but when she was with Tom she would be sour most of the time, arguing alot, but the thing is that Daria realizes that Trent isn't exactly dependable, like how he's always sleeping and not exactly heading anywhere in life,so she had to give up on him...oh if only Daria could have one final episode of them in their 20s and Daria and Trent giving it another shot :)
