I vividly remember this game, I loved it! It looks so very dated and the PC that I used to play it on, well, that looks incredibly old. Talk about nostalgia, eh?
music brings back memories :) I played this on PC back then. I remember this video being in MPG format in a game directory and I had played it alone in some DOS MPEG player....oh those day...
this is one of my all time PS Games. My room mates and I got this when it first came out along with Battle Arena Toshinden and Space Griffin. It was before I knew I had OCD and the timed missions would always piss me off. I would always say "I'm never playing this dam game again!" Then a few hours later I would be right back at it. Beat it several times.
I'd say, remake the game as close to the original as possible (aside from graphics possibly), but to redo the original levels (vr, industrial, military, and world at war) I think is quite important, even if you must slightly change the name to avoid anything legal that could happen (not that anyone remembers, from what I gathered). Anyway though, I think (I'll say it again) that the level editor and the level swapping possibility idea might bring huge potential.
[continued]: I also remembered someone (mortarion 12) in the comments having declared that he had coded the first 3 VR zone levels. Anyways, with a few enhancements (such as an easy to use level editor and the ability to exchange levels) I'm sure this game might attract a whole community to itself. (Just please remember us PC gamers: Don't give everything to the Xbox arcade).
I remember having made an enquiry with SCEE (psygnosis), yet since the franchise is all but dead, they didn't issue much concern (actually, they didn't remember the game at first). Also, I contacted mario d'onofrio (one of the game's programmers now at EA UK), doesn't see any thing wrong with it. I remember having asked for things like the remains of a level editor for assault rigs, but nothing could be recovered. If you want the game to live up to it's full potential, then GO!
[Continued] There are also legal issues. Old Psygnosis is still alive and kicking under the name SCE Studio Liverpool, which is a part of Sony. I have no idea whether "Assault Rigs" is a registered trademark or not, and how similar a remake could be made without pissing them off.
I think all thank you for replying. I myself must say I can only do textures, that's what I do. In Photoshop. I like the TRON textures, not the WWII ones of Assault Rigs. It should be VR style. I wonder what the others say. A remake (with a better colission behaviour and controlling) would be great. Thanks again & regards,
i would love to see a remake of this game with the same graphics as the intro for PS3 in HD (wasnt a fan of the ps1 graphics and the tanks didnt really look as good as in the intro) how awesome would that be, also online multiplayer and a few extra features would be great
I've concidered coding a remake, if I don't run into IP/Copyright issues. I never got the chance to try Assault Rigs in multiplayer as it required two copies of the game, two televisions and two Playstation units. But a remake would have been awesome to play online.
I'm lucky enough to own 2 Playstation's and two copies of Assault Rigs, got the Data cable too, not tried it yet !!!
Its a great game, I love this opening, you should make a sequal and call it AR:2, no copy right probs with that name, Psygnosis ripped off Tron, you rip them off lol !!!
Too many balls in the air I guess, but I have started coding at last. As of now, I'm using ODE for the physics and collision checking. AR's levels was completely constructed by fixed-size blocks. As this simplifies a lot of stuff, I hope to remake the original levels. (PSX not the Deamcast ones)
Sorry for this late reply on your post. If this is true, I also would like to have (and buy) even a sample from your work. It wouldn't matter if the level architecture would be still like the original. With kind regards.
you still working on a remake? I made the 3 'virtual zone' rigs as 3d models, if you're interested just let me know. They're not skinned but are higher poly than the originals, this game rules!
Ah, i remember when i first played this, i like 4 years old. Now im 14 years old. Good times...

This is possibly the best tank-game ever made. Great puzzles, interesting weapons, huge levels and a tonn of fun. Thanks Psygnosis!
I bought this about 11 years ago, and I still have my original Playstation and AR-CD :-)
