All the band vids on my channel with the Zi8 are useing the 5 buck Sony ECM-DS70P. The trick is go into settings of the camera and turn the volume all the way down before you record a band. You have to reset it if you turn the camera off or the volume will go back to full.
i have a zi8 as well. i bought a cheap lil knob mic (fingernail big) and it doesn't work when plugged in. my oem mic works fine though. do i need to make sure that the mic is stereo? furthermore, do u film outside? how do u find wind noise on your mic?
Dunno what you lot are smoking, or if you're fooled by louder sound. The fake Kodak was far more distorted than the internal mic, but it was louder. The sound of the lapel mic just shows that you have to spend more to get a good lapel mic.
I would be nice to hear the sound with different frequencies, specially low frequencies to have a good idea of the sound, you only have used your voice to test the sound. thx
The Audio Technica 3350 is obviously a mono mic. the fake Sony is heard in both my headphone speakers, as was the built-in mic. The fake Sony sounds okay. Does it have a battery in it?
The sound from the Sony knockoff is much cleaner than the internal mic (2nd best) and the ATR (worst of the three). i think the slight distortion was due to the fact that it was plugged directly into the camera on the side, therefore putting it closest to the speakers mouth of the three.
n00blyf is correct. only the left speaker works for the Audio Technica. the fake sony is way worth the money and quality over the audio technocrap. the real sony though, is better than both these mics
The lapel mic sounds much better. For people commenting who don't understand, it's a mono mic so that's why it's only coming through one speaker. The uploader should've fixed that himself.
The ATR 3350 is a radio mic? So the difference is that you can stand up to 10 metres away from the unit and still get clarity - the fake Sony mic picks up loads of ambient sound - so if you are outside you would get more background than the built in, and the ATR 3350 SHOULD return better sound quality. IMO - best off with the Audio Technica - at least you can use it when away from the Zi8!
It depends on what you want and how much you know about each mic. To my ear, the Sony & the onboard don't sound too different from each other. I know that the ATR only feeds to one channel, but it completely eliminates the ambient noise and its features are perfect for interviews, etc. A cheap adapter fixes that.
Because the AT mic is mono I listened to it using only the left side of my headphones. I liked the sound of the AT model. The built-in mic is nice but has no mids so it can have some problem with intelligibility. The SONY sounds thin and noisy with some distortion but that probably comes from the mic preamp. Anyway, I would not choose that. The AT model has more lows and good midrange. It was also a little bit distorted before 2:40. Maybe it was closer to your mouth than after that. Thanks.
The Sony sounds the best. You need to use a 1/8" stereo to mono adapter for the AT to record to both channels. All three sound acceptable but the fake Sony is the best. The AT would be the best for interviews though so that you wouldn't have to be real close to the subject. BTW it's the Kodak Zee Eye Eight. Only the Brits say Zed. Up the Revolution!

The fake one sounded horrible.
As fwupow mentions, the distortion was noticeable.

I'd go with the internal. The knockoff Sony was louder but it sounded like there was some distortion at higher sound levels. Too close to mouth?

score 8 for fake

The AT is definitely the worst, the Sony clone blows it away.

Only the left speaker is audible with the Audio Technica, is that the same for everyone else?

I actually think the internal mic on the zi8 sounds best.
