@abehammy they acquired all their assets including aircraft routes and gates. If you're asking like why TWA disappeared it's just because AA repainted all TWA aircraft, ticket counters, gates, etc.
@abehammy well honestly I was too young at the time to realize or understand the present situation haha (only 15yrs old now) but I do wish AA wouldn't have fired all the TWA employees, rather than just demolish the company they should've actually "merged". As far as liveries and stuff goes I like both so I do wish that planes previously owned by TWA could still fly those colors even though they're now actually AA. Just my opinion though I don't know the politics.
The good news is that AMR lost $471,000,000 last year. So all the cuts they made last year didn't patch up their losses. Soon they'll start selling off portions of AA, probably to US Airways or Delta since they're the only 2 legacy carriers that are profitable
@andrewhurricane Given AMR's orders with Airbus and Boeing, likely the only thing that would happen is the sale of the remaining aging fleet of MD-80s which is what the new 320s and 737s are replacing. And those would be sold to the Part 135 operators who want larger aircraft for business clients (Which is why Boeing is doing extremely well in sales of its Business fleet (modified versions of the 737, 747, 767, 777 and 787).
@andrewhurricane Also, whilst there are Part 121 start ups who could buy them, it would be like buying a 737 from Southwest (given Southwest has repeatedly been caught violating (and in turn bribing Officials) Maintenance regulations). A question of "How long before this plane has another maintenance fault? And do we fix it? Or do we do the Southwest thing and just say we fixed it?".
The glory days of TWA had already gone, I think if they brought back the old livery and that funky rainbow striped uniform, they could have been great again. TWA ended up looking too much like American, so American ripped them out of the sky and fired their entire crew! What happened to American?! At one point they were just as good as TWA! Then they dressed their crew like grannies and took away the hospitality and boom, airline ruined!
@RickMakesGoodVideos TWA was going to go, there were no two ways about it, but it could of been handled better, AA destroyed TWA over night and AA managment should be ashamed at what they did.

@pete5668 Your analogy of "the big ones always eat the little ones" is moronic! Will you eat your young like gators? AA/AMR don't act in good faith towards their employees, business partners or clients, they will sell their mother's for a profit!
@rocker78able Well, this IS the airline business. Large airlines such as AA tend to merger just too many airlines, but the question is, why TWA? What's wrong with TWA?
@rocker78able I know...that was also the way Delta treated the Pan Am members, the way PSA members were treated by USAir as well. The tagline "Two great airlines, One great future" is just WRONG, WRONG and WRONG. If I was a pilot in the States, rest assured, I will never with American. EVER.

Not one TWA flight attendant is flying for AA. they have put all TWA flight attendants on the street. Over a 1000 of us never flew on AA planes, (only TWA planes in AA uniforms). Its sad what they did to the employees of a great airline. Its sad APFA union never supported their employees or welcome us.
i know!i saw a video that said that not even one employe of trans worls airlineis going to be fired but i dont know if that was true.i wish i flew twa but i guess its too late :( i really miss her.
I'm not so sure it was a merger. Corporate takeover and carve up of TWA assets was more accurate. The AA spin machine is very good at portraying things in a different light isnt it?
Two great airlines; one great future. How many of the TWA employees have a great future? AA employees are obnoxious pricks who deserve to be covered in boils. And that's being nice. I hope they get absorbed into another airline and lose their jobs.
You are crazy if you think SWA or jetblue or jet air is ever going to be able to buy out american, first of all Congress wouldnt allow it. American Airlines is the gateway to the United States for the world and if the US Gov't allowed it to go under, it would loose a good amount of money from tourism and revenue they make from taxes. So no, I dont see if happening anytime soon. And in case you are talking about JetBlue buying AA, JBU cant even afford the DirecTV on its flights, its in deep debt.
No. JetBlue will never buy AA. JetBLue is too good. Delta is really the flag carrier now. They are the largest US-Europe carrie, largest US-Asia Carrier, 1 of like 4 US-Australian carriers, and carry a big amount of cargo.
SWA could buy AA if they wanted to. They don't, but they probably have the cash. SWA is really the only airline that doesn't have to worry about making a profit.
Do you think Southwest really has the money to buy American? American is much larger than Southwest and has many more expenses, including landing rights and employee wages (unionized), than Southwest. American's a big fish, Southwest really isn't. We're talking about a world-class airline being bought by a discount airline. NOT HAPPENING. It's just not possible.
You do know that southwest has tons more money than american rite? Southwest airlines is the highest traveled airline for domestic flights and with american being both domestic and international southwest still flies more per year than american...... Southwest could easily buy american.!
No, you retard, southwest is more likely to be bought out by American. Southwest does not have nearly enough money to even dream about doing that. Southwest airlines is not even legally able to fly international flights because of they don't assign seating. So please explain your logic behind Southwest being able to buy American.
Logic, simple! If they are the ACQUISITION like AA on TW, they will have your gates, your landing rights and what ever is left of AA, good greetings goodbye AA!
because AA's main aircraft is the MD-80, when this was filmed, they had about 350 in their fleet. They now have 279, but the Super 80 is still the backbone of their fleet, they accuired most of them from the TWA merger
Not most, but a good piece of them. They had 200 some odd MD-82s when they acquired TW, but they got about 130 MD-83s from TWA. Most of the American S80s you see today are ex-TWA (AA retired some of their original 80s), since they were on average a few years newer and had less flight time and the upgraded avionics systems common to the second production run -83s (/Q capable from the factory)
Made it a nice little investment for AAL, especially after they dumped the 752's on Delta for pure cash.
Why dump brand new 752s despite them being powerd by P&W engines. Why dump the 717s. And of course the 741s and 742s were sent directly to the desert by AAL. bastards. If TWA were still around I have a small feeling that they would've kept there 747 Classic fleet. Even though to most airlines now,a wide body twin like the A330 or 777 would do fine.
Steven - as much as nostalgically the 741's and 742's were loved - commercially they were well past their use-by-date. I'd suggest they were long term, not going to be part of TWA's strategy had they survived.
Yeah...what a pitty. But if airlines had the finances to upgrade older aircraft, we would see a multitude of different aircraft gracing the skies. Not just A320s 737s
A340s and 30s and 777s. Look at the U.S.Air Force they opted to keep upgrading there KC-135 (B707) and
I wish they'd kept the 757s. it might up been harder to maintain them due to their streamlined operations, but still. However, cash is still nice. The 717 would have been nice because it's new, but I just don't like the seat configurations on them and the MD-80s.
i don't know about those classic 747s. i mean sure, they would have continued operating 747s, but they probably would have upgraded to the -400 series, and ordered some new -8s.
The final TWA 747 flight took place 2 years before the AA takeover so no TWA would not have kept them infact TWA had a very small widebody fleet left at the takeover.
really? because i'm from st. louis one of AA's hubs and they still havent made lambert airport an international gateway, plus that long runway they built rarely gets used...
twastinks has a great point. AA bought TWA. the only reason why USAirways kept a couple AmericaWest paints was becuase they "merged". those aircraft are operated by AmericaWest and are run under teh callsign "cactus". TWA's company is completely gone, no sense in having paints for em. I never had the oppurtunity to fly TWA but i'm sure it was a great airline like many others. Grow up and quit with the language and move on.
Fuck AA. They screwed over the TWA employees and left no trace of a great company. They could of at least had a few heritage painted aircraft like US Airways does.
AA also has dirty aircraft, and poor Flight Attendants. I thought NW F/A's were bad until I flew AA.
I like AA, I've liked AA for a while, but my first loyalties were with TWA. I remember spending seven hours on a layover in STL because of overbooked flights, but I remember that no matter what, the agents were always friendly, and I recall a few comped bottles of wine on some transcon flights. TWA felt like you were flying with people, not with AA robots. Air travel's become less of an experience and more of a "get there for cheap" commodity. It's sad really.
the only people that really can be fun to fly with in my experience over the past few years is Frontier Airlines who may be able to break the bankruptcy list in 2009, its sad though for the fact i must regret the loss of TWA even though i haven't flown on them of that i can remember. There was a reality show on Frontier Airlines, check it out, these flight attendants are well qualified if i say so myself.
Newsflash for you Einstiens ----AA bought twa not merged. The smart move would have been to purchase the routes, shell the crappy planes (which has finally been completed) and close that crappy facility they try to call a maintenance base in MCI. Merger, crap who was dillusional ichan or the employees?
AA kept most of TWA's MD-80s (Which is why you find several configurations of S80s in AA's fleet today; AA bought, TWA initial orders, Reno Air birds, and TWA final order birds) and also kept all of the 767s. They leased off the PW engined 757s, sold the DC-9s, and gobbled up the TWE fleet along with the Embraers that TWE had just purchased. AA simply ate TWA. TWA had disposed of half of its 747s, all of its 727s and L1011s, and was purchasing more MD80s when AA bought it. Do your research first
It's a tragedy that TWA's gone. I'll always remember my 5:30 AM BOS-STL flights, and I'll never forget the excellent service they provided.
My mother worked for TWA since 1976, she now works for American, and has a seniority of April 2001 (Acq. date) but thankfully a pay seniority of 1976. She was forced to work at 3:30 AM for the first three years after the takeover. No TWA FAs work for AA to this day, and most of the pilots are gone too.
You'd think it would have been in American's best interest to keep the Trans World brand alive. It had been one of the industry leaders for like 50 years. Seems like kind of a waste of a great brand.
AA's best interest? TWA was a financial mess, hence why they were able to be bought, rather than merged with. The airline went through several reorganizations and bankruptcy more than once. American would have been stupid to merge and simply allow their airline to become tainted.
I Live in st.louis and im 15.i grew up seein all those armada of TWA jets ...all gone and Lambert pretty much has died ever since but now southwest is taking over i mean were barely an international airport if it wasnt for the charters.
TWA was a hell of a lot better than AA and UA EVER WERE (i used to work for UAL and i still think TWA was better) very nice genuine employees w/ DECADES of experience...worldy, classy, well versed...and stories to tell for days...i really miss those guys...
that just bullshit moves by aa... going to what JHinMiami said AA just of tooken the merger piece by piece and stay up to date with the USAir/United possible merger. If you take your time good things happen... go fast.. look you do something and the reason why you did it fades away
So Get this AA must really need money beacuse they are the only airline to charge for you luggage when every other airline lets you have 1 50 lbs bag free its 30 bucks a bag round trip so either they want more money just because they are greedy or they are in financial crisis DEJEVU! WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND
yaa just to let you all know that charging 15 bucks thing takes effect June 5th... AA boost the stl hub back up and you will make money and you wont need to charge for bags
A lot of Puerto Ricans in Hartford, STLBlues. Maybe you check on that before posting... I'm guessing that flight does OK.
As for TWA & AA, not so good, at least for TWA employees. It was not the harmonious marriage between two great airlines that this commercial would lead you to believe. Watch out Delta and Northwest!
I find it funny how AA is running around with loads of MD-80's and a few 757, while TWA is mostly 757 and bigger with a few MD-80, I bet AA was jealous...this scenario made me change my mind on how good AA is, because I always thought it was a good airline, then I removed it off my personal "best airline list" and replaced the top spot with Emirates. :P
AA says Lambert is the airlines 4th largest hub, they sure as hell arent treating it like it. Raliegh airport, tiny hardly gets any people there a year. They are putting a flight to London from there, thats fucking gay. Fort Lauderdale, isnt a hub or focus city of aa, has international caribeean flights to san juan and kingston. STL doesnt have any of this, aa is screwing us over. San juan is 5th largest for AA, they dont have a STL-San Juan flight, thats a hub to hub flight, PATHETIC
couldnt agree with you more. I have flown on a London-STL flight packed, is the RDU flight packed no. And just because AA has a contract doesnt make it right either. They SHOULD have STL-LHR/SJU. Heck even BDL goes to SJU on AA.
See thats where all the gay stuff comes in, Hartford- San Juan, thats just terrible, HARTFORD??? how many people are going to be on or want to be on that flight, no one wants to go to hartford, STL-SJU makes sense, hub to hub, stl big city, hartford-sju, hartford is just weird route for that
that's awesome

Not one TWA flight attendant is flying for AA. they have put all TWA flight attendants on the street. Over a 1000 of us never flew on AA planes, (only TWA planes in AA uniforms). Its sad what they did to the employees of a great airline. Its sad APFA union never supported their employees or welcome us.

i know!i saw a video that said that not even one employe of trans worls airlineis going to be fired but i dont know if that was true.i wish i flew twa but i guess its too late :( i really miss her.

Stupid American Airlines. That stupid airline now charges $20 for a FREAKING PIECE OF LUGGAGE!!!!! CAN'T EVEN CHECK IT ONLINE!!!

Guess what? They're not the only one! If you were in the same position, you would. And SWA and JetBlue are a completely different story.

I think AA should of toke TWA's name instead. Some people said noone could buy out american then why did US AIRWAYS planned to merge?

I'm glad American Airlines merged with TWA it was neded and look at American Airlines today it is bigger and more modern....amd has more hubs

goddamn american airlines! they had to buy out one of the world's most well known airlines. Rest in Peace TWA.
miamibeach1791 2 years ago
I'm not so sure it was a merger. Corporate takeover and carve up of TWA assets was more accurate. The AA spin machine is very good at portraying things in a different light isnt it?
Brac1 2 years ago
Two great airlines; one great future. How many of the TWA employees have a great future? AA employees are obnoxious pricks who deserve to be covered in boils. And that's being nice. I hope they get absorbed into another airline and lose their jobs.
PatroniFan 2 years ago
Let me tell something my friend, i have predicted that too. 15 years from now, Value JET or SWA will be aquiring AA.
I am on my 40s, I will live to see those AA worker crying for being put on the botton of the senority list saying "that ins't fair".
And I will be telling them, "it was fair when you did it to TWA, wasnt it?
maurydez 2 years ago
You are crazy if you think SWA or jetblue or jet air is ever going to be able to buy out american, first of all Congress wouldnt allow it. American Airlines is the gateway to the United States for the world and if the US Gov't allowed it to go under, it would loose a good amount of money from tourism and revenue they make from taxes. So no, I dont see if happening anytime soon. And in case you are talking about JetBlue buying AA, JBU cant even afford the DirecTV on its flights, its in deep debt.
AAL558 2 years ago
Early 70, Pan am and TWA ruled.
Could you ever immagine those 2 airliines would be out of business by 2000?
AA is the biggest now. wiht 70000 employee, Can you think about how much retirement they are paying compairedto SWA?
Just think about 15 years from now.
AA is right now what TWA was about 30 years ago.
I ll be here to see that. Those AA guys crying about their pension.
SWA guys merging with 100% senority and AA guys going to the bottom.
Whatch and see it.
maurydez 2 years ago
Just learn from history, my friend.
Look back in time and think if you could ever imagine AA taking over TWA one day.
maurydez 2 years ago
Yes, I could. American hasn't been a small fish for a long time.
N750AN 2 years ago
very true , I couldnt imagine DAL taking Pan Am or NWA either.
srita764 1 year ago
No. JetBlue will never buy AA. JetBLue is too good. Delta is really the flag carrier now. They are the largest US-Europe carrie, largest US-Asia Carrier, 1 of like 4 US-Australian carriers, and carry a big amount of cargo.
jetbluensw 2 years ago
Yeah that was after they merged with Northwest Airlines last year.
TheIzobo 2 years ago
SWA could buy AA if they wanted to. They don't, but they probably have the cash. SWA is really the only airline that doesn't have to worry about making a profit.
jetbluensw 2 years ago
hmm yeah seeing as how they lost 60 million 2 quarters ago, and their fuel hedge is about ready to disappear.
get ready for southwest to start charging for bags very soon
krispykreme82603 2 years ago
yeah, but what happens to them when their fuel contracts expire??? reality make give Southwest Airlines a rude wake-up call...
AmericanImmaturity 2 years ago
Do you think Southwest really has the money to buy American? American is much larger than Southwest and has many more expenses, including landing rights and employee wages (unionized), than Southwest. American's a big fish, Southwest really isn't. We're talking about a world-class airline being bought by a discount airline. NOT HAPPENING. It's just not possible.
N750AN 2 years ago
You do know that southwest has tons more money than american rite? Southwest airlines is the highest traveled airline for domestic flights and with american being both domestic and international southwest still flies more per year than american...... Southwest could easily buy american.!
twawasthebest 2 years ago
No, you retard, southwest is more likely to be bought out by American. Southwest does not have nearly enough money to even dream about doing that. Southwest airlines is not even legally able to fly international flights because of they don't assign seating. So please explain your logic behind Southwest being able to buy American.
greenshoes3 2 years ago
Logic, simple! If they are the ACQUISITION like AA on TW, they will have your gates, your landing rights and what ever is left of AA, good greetings goodbye AA!

why is it that most of the AA planes shown are MD-80s??
Jobafan08 3 years ago
because AA's main aircraft is the MD-80, when this was filmed, they had about 350 in their fleet. They now have 279, but the Super 80 is still the backbone of their fleet, they accuired most of them from the TWA merger
richrichieman 3 years ago 3
Not most, but a good piece of them. They had 200 some odd MD-82s when they acquired TW, but they got about 130 MD-83s from TWA. Most of the American S80s you see today are ex-TWA (AA retired some of their original 80s), since they were on average a few years newer and had less flight time and the upgraded avionics systems common to the second production run -83s (/Q capable from the factory)
Made it a nice little investment for AAL, especially after they dumped the 752's on Delta for pure cash.
mspencer02 2 years ago
Why dump brand new 752s despite them being powerd by P&W engines. Why dump the 717s. And of course the 741s and 742s were sent directly to the desert by AAL. bastards. If TWA were still around I have a small feeling that they would've kept there 747 Classic fleet. Even though to most airlines now,a wide body twin like the A330 or 777 would do fine.
stevenroxyosox 2 years ago
Steven - as much as nostalgically the 741's and 742's were loved - commercially they were well past their use-by-date. I'd suggest they were long term, not going to be part of TWA's strategy had they survived.
Brac1 2 years ago
Yeah...what a pitty. But if airlines had the finances to upgrade older aircraft, we would see a multitude of different aircraft gracing the skies. Not just A320s 737s
A340s and 30s and 777s. Look at the U.S.Air Force they opted to keep upgrading there KC-135 (B707) and
KC-10 (DC-10) tanker fleet instead of buying new.
stevenroxyosox 2 years ago
I wish they'd kept the 757s. it might up been harder to maintain them due to their streamlined operations, but still. However, cash is still nice. The 717 would have been nice because it's new, but I just don't like the seat configurations on them and the MD-80s.
N750AN 2 years ago
AA totally screwed twa Up AA was taking too much money from TWA So RIght now Md80 are the airplane for AA
boycoollike 2 years ago
i don't know about those classic 747s. i mean sure, they would have continued operating 747s, but they probably would have upgraded to the -400 series, and ordered some new -8s.
AmericanImmaturity 2 years ago
The final TWA 747 flight took place 2 years before the AA takeover so no TWA would not have kept them infact TWA had a very small widebody fleet left at the takeover.

flyusair 3 years ago
twastinks has a great point. Delta767300ER 3 years ago
It's sad really.
mspencer02 3 years ago 2
I agree with ya mspencer. Flying now is like riding a Greyhound bus.
Delta767300ER 3 years ago 3
the only people that really can be fun to fly with in my experience over the past few years is Frontier Airlines who may be able to break the bankruptcy list in 2009, its sad though for the fact i must regret the loss of TWA even though i haven't flown on them of that i can remember. There was a reality show on Frontier Airlines, check it out, these flight attendants are well qualified if i say so myself.

AmericanImmaturity 3 years ago
Newsflash for you Einstiens ----AA bought twa not merged. The smart move would have been to purchase the routes, shell the crappy planes (which has finally been completed) and close that crappy facility they try to call a maintenance base in MCI. Merger, crap who was dillusional ichan or the employees?
twastinks 3 years ago
AA kept most of TWA's MD-80s (Which is why you find several configurations of S80s in AA's fleet today; AA bought, TWA initial orders, Reno Air birds, and TWA final order birds) and also kept all of the 767s. They leased off the PW engined 757s, sold the DC-9s, and gobbled up the TWE fleet along with the Embraers that TWE had just purchased. AA simply ate TWA. TWA had disposed of half of its 747s, all of its 727s and L1011s, and was purchasing more MD80s when AA bought it. Do your research first
mspencer02 3 years ago
You really need to check your stats again. My reasearch is done and the truth has been spoken. Good luck with that!

The song is the untitled AA theme for post-9/11.

HA! one great future my butt.

This just makes me want to vomit. Not
the video itself, but the meaning. I
will never see red and white flying over

hard-working TWA employees were sold, was
the real tragedy. God Bless the TWA crews
over the years, I love you for all you
brought to my home state.

They should of called the merged airline TAWA
Trans American World Airlines...
SkyFox98 3 years ago
You'd think it would have been in American's best interest to keep the Trans World brand alive. It had been one of the industry leaders for like 50 years. Seems like kind of a waste of a great brand.
TownsendServer 3 years ago
AA's best interest? TWA was a financial mess, hence why they were able to be bought, rather than merged with. The airline went through several reorganizations and bankruptcy more than once. American would have been stupid to merge and simply allow their airline to become tainted.

STLBluesrule44 3 years ago
