You can still have a lot of money and be sad as fuck. The only thing that has ever made me unconditionally happy is a girl by my side that i could love. Without love you ain't got shit.
i saw t model at the juke joint festival again this year.. he's alot of fun to listen to live, that's for sure!! his 90th b-day party is at red's lounge in clarksdale, ms the 25th of june
We all know the blues. I don't care if you're a starving orphan or a CEO, if you are in touch with your soul, you have the blues. Thanks to those who have deeper blues than us for sharing!
Its such a shame when people get going on this whole 'rich people can't have the blues thing'. I don't think that T-Model Ford was thinking about how hard done by he is when he was playing this song. He was probably thinking about what a great time he was having in this club. He blues is by no means all about being miserable, its largely about having a good time in a club, and this is most evident when you listen and watch a guy like T Model Ford
@casu3 people who have had a hard life don't want to wallow in misery. That's why bluesmen play the blues - to enjoy themselves, let go and boogie - blues is not all about pain. It may have arisen as a result of sadness but real blues, not face pulling guitar wankery blues, is about having a good time and forgetting your troubles. When you REALLY listen to any great blues songwriters alot of it is wordplay and inuendo, not pain and misery as some 'blues scholars' would have you believe.
Thats the real shit when it comes to blues. Nothing against BB King , but you cant really sing the blues when you have a lot of money and your own signature Gibson guitar can you? That lacks the soul and substance of REAL Delta blues. Guys like T-Model Ford and RL Burnside represented the REAL side of blues. Lived hard lives, served time in jail, and lived poor until the very end. He's been quoted saying to studio musicians "T-Model Ford is going to remember you sorry fuckers how it's done."
Not exactly, BB King wasn't always "King of the Blues" he got his start playing in juke joints and plowing fields just like these guys. He just moved north, so he got the exposure. That said it is nice to hear some blues you can dance to instead of every blues album being one long guitar solo!
Yeah but its alot harder to sing about hard times, pain, sorrow and misery when you got all the money you need. Guys like T-Model Ford , RL Burnside, Junior Kimbraugh all grew up in the hard-time south Delta. Those guys knew what it meant to suffer and do without and alot , including T-Model, did time in prison . Rich people can't relate to that kind of sorrow. Sorry. If you want to hear blues in its rawest-purest form, look no further
Do you think rich people dont have misery? MONEY CAN'T BUY HAPPINES.
And if I want to hear blues in it's "rawest-purest form" I WILL look further and listen to Jim Jackson, Eli Framer, Louis Lasky, Garfield Akers, King Solomon Hill....
@clockworkmike83 couldn't be further from the truth. there was a blues musician a long time ago named chester burnett. always was financially successful, but the man played some of the best blues you'll ever hear. never seen a chester burnett album? try looking for his stage name: howlin' wolf
@shardimon Well by that logic though, Willie Dixon was the most succesful of them all. He wrote for just about every blues artist and even some R&B/ early rock artists. The Chess Record family all played music written by Willie Dixon, INCLUDING Howlin' Wolf. As for finances? Willie pretty much remained weathly even into his death through careful years of planning and succesful lawsuits against Led Zeppelin.
@clockworkmike83 that's all true. and all serves to negate the comment that nobody but the poor, broke down among us are able to play "real" blues. that's all i'm saying :)
@shardimon I get what your saying, I guess what i was shooting for was to state that guys like BB King get all this attention as the king of blues when he really didnt have nearly the same upbringing or lifestyle as most of the other bluesmen of his time, he was like Blues-lite really lol
@clockworkmike83 i can dig it. well, his upbringing wasn't a wealthy one (after all, how bad must a person need money to travel across states in hopes of driving a tractor?) but his style is def a lot different than blues artists before him. much more structured & less raw than hooker, different soloing style than guy, etc. anyway, t's interesting how often that criticism of king pops up, yet i've never ever heard it of clapton. what do you think?
@shardimon My honest opinion on Clapton is probably very controversial. I personally thought he was grossly overrated. Don't get me wrong Clapton is an amazing guitarist and for a white guy from England, he did capture alot of the Chicago blues in is playing. But for people to label him as a blues legend? Absurd. There were a lot of other greater guitarist in his time who could pull the blues off better. Jeff Beck could play ANY style music and Jimi Hendrix took blues from the Delta to Venus
I'm from Leland Mississippi and T-Model plays at all the blues festivals around where I live. BB King's home town Indianola, MS is 10 minutes up the highway, and the famous Crossroads where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil is about 40 minutes up highway 61.
Johnny Copeland and Albert Collins not to mention Robert Clay were awesome too!!!

Excellent, awesome version of this song. I guess that means youtube will be taking it down then huh?

This is heavy. Don't forget about Mickey Rogers when it comes to blues men. He plays down Ebonys in Indianola.
