The object of the game is for players to use a wooden axe-shaped stick called a hurley (in Irish a camán, pronounced "kam-awn"), or a hurl, to hit a small ball called a sliotar (pronounced "slitt-er") between the opponents' goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal, which is equivalent to three points.

The worst match i was ever at in my life and we won!! I will never forget this day. The ref was a disgrace. If Limerick hadn't resolved to sneeky tactics they could have won. They played some beautiful hurling. I remember at one point Richie Bennis gave the thumbs up to one of his players for decking John Gardner when the game had stopped-an absolute disgrace. Its a pity because there is plenty of hurling talent in Limerick.
