I'll admit that it takes real skill to do that, but I personally do not like that. Some musicians have to realize the fine line between doing something that takes skill and doing something that sounds good.
Billy Sheehan has co-wrote a #1 pop song, and sold many millions of albums in more than one band. I think he has proven himself and if you don't like his shredding, so be it.
BTW, this is rock: Jazz players are often really great musicians, but they often can't write a pop tune, and the bass usually sounds like dogshit. imho.
well, he does do what a bassist "should" do. During a song he gets the job done. He only plays like this for his solos. Plus, there isnt a right or wrong way to play an instrument, if it sounds good, f**ck it, play it that way. Im just sayin.
great player, really, but he should be playing guitar. Personally, i feel he doesn't do what a bassist should do. He uses the bass to imitate a sound that a guitar can do 100 times better. I'm curious how other people think about this.
I agree.... I play bass and could never play remotely like that OR do I want to play that fast! Even playing metal is no where like that. He's playing the bass like a Guitar. If thats how he likes to play and shred he should do it on a guitar. It would sound 100 times better. I think all bassist know you're hardly ever in the spotlight soloing. More the foundation of the band.
He's cool, don't get me wrong, I just think that the sound and style of his playing would be better suited for a guitar. And no, I don't think a bassplayer should only do boring stuff. They can be in the spotlight (victor Wooten for instance). But you should know what instrument youre holding, in my opinion.Check out Jeff Schmidt, that's playing bass with a bass sound and still higher pitched (piccollo strings). He is a virtuoso without wanting to sound like Steve Vai.But he, it's just an opinion.
Showoff bit? what, a 1000mph wankalot fest that has no structure, melodic value or soul?it fucking sucks, and for you to get all excited by it shows what you know. Mr Big!? you wanker, an over inflated ego, soft rock band for jessies.
Don't call me a jackass, you cock smoking fucktard.
And I must congratulate you on your SUPERB skills of being able to look up a website and copy and paste it to use as an insult I mean that takes skill, congratulations seriously.
Get a grip buttnugget - if it isnt your type of video there are plenty of others out there, dont pester us with your incompetance and arsehole like comments and attitude - go get laid or something just stop annoying people with real taste.
the thing is when most guitars are shredding as fast as he is at about 40 seconds they have to be masked with distortion so u can't hear they're mistakes, but he just does make them anyway
I know he's fabulous player but god do I hate the sound of those basses.... they're utterly rubbish. All middle frequencies nothing else, doesn't even sound like a bass player. Sad really :o/
woh ill show u that playing fast on a guitar sounds way better the wat ever the hell this guys doin. ill make a vid soon and shove it right in your your face. it might take a while but when you get that little message that ses eat it bitch in you mail box and its a vid of me blowing you and this guy away ull be like wtf. so u get a life and also no honestly this guy sounds like a broken guitar farting
maybe its just the fact that it's also live with no actual audio tuning so it just sounds raw. In a more polished video this would sound better. Just the way he moves is jaw dropping enough.
0:19, That's pretty crazy, haha.

Just sounds like noise. I mean he can play fast but its just nonsense. Jaco/Vic/Felix/Marcus all better musically than this Sheehan.

@gibsonj4 I agree...but Billy is a rock player. I love Wooten's music, but it's another kind of musical aproach. Greetings from Spain.

i totally agree, we could say ,he is "too good with bass" ;)
SexotronHimself 2 years ago
eh, no. he would be good with a guitar. he lacks the real groove of a great bassplayer. shredding is not grooving.

3 must sees:
Michael Manring "The Enormous Room"
Jeff Schmidt -SOLO BASS - Mudita
Victor Wooten amazing grace

@robertvdpoel I love Schmidt, but by that logic the same could be said of him, that his style of music would be better suited to an acoustic guitar.

what fucking use is a bass line like that?
Imagine the song, where the whole band are playing like that at the same time, what a great piece of music that wouldn't be......

Couple of things here...
NEWSFLASH : 1000mph wankalot fests ARE solos for guys like Sheehan and Gilbert
Secondly - if Mr Big were a soft rock band for pussies they wouldnt have lasted till now making sellout gigs across the world.
Thirdly and lastly - I'll call you whatever I want and if you dont like the video dont watch it.
Your welcome :-)

How very apt, you brave warrior of the p.c.

yep, that was pretty cool, but his scalloped frets help him get a hold of the string better for bends like that.
