The major difference between Flair, Hogan, and the Superstar is that Billy knew when it was time to hang it up. Even at an older age though Flair and Superstar still had it, Hogan can't honestly say that. Not knocking Hogan, just stating what I believe to be true.
Who was the Superstar not the biggest star ever? The muscle of Terry Bolea, the fashion sense of jessie the body ventura, the voice of the American Dream?
what the hell is this?? Ive always thought that hogan was original and made wrestling. Now this dude pops up on my monitor and turn everything upside down. So hogan is actually a copy, or should i say- "inspired" by this guy ?? Hell.. i gotta start watching vintage wrestling now and build up some kind of knowledge!!
I see Hogan, Savage, and Rhodes in this guy. I don't know who started first or who influenced who, but i was immediately reminded of those 3 when I started watching this clip. This is my first time seeing who Billy Graham is.
@iverar umm, thats because he was the biggest steroid abuser of his time. He was one of the first guys that found out that steroids fuck your body up, and know he is crippled.
Oh my god, this man is the "Big Bang of Style"! I'm not a big wrestling expert but even I can imediately see like five or six wrestlers that were either influenced by him or directly copied parts of his great style.
Wow, Hogan pretty much copied all of Superstar Billy Graham's catch phrases. He just did it better. Plus the younger generation at the time didn't know who Graham was.
@cuban252 Yeah, there's a lot about how Hogan ripped off Billy Graham's image and style completely, but Steiner did it even more. Hulk moved away from the Billy Graham image a bit while he was Hollywood Hogan, but Steiner never stopped being a pathetic rip-off. And when the steroids got to his brain, he just fell apart.
The Superstar's arms are so big he's got to take them in to the shop to get them speed balanced, and Nature Boy "Slicky Ricy Flair", then the belt has asphalt, Graham was awesome one interviews.
@speedbuggy before there was Hogan, Flair, or Rhodes---- there was the Superstar! All 3 of em have said that they patterned themselves after Superstar to some extent- and Superstar? Who did he emmulate... Muhammad Ali, who had said that he copied... Georgeous George! talk about 6 degrees of separation!
I went to a match at the spectrem in philly. It was Billy Graham against Bruno Samartino in a steel cage match. Billy Graham won by being the first to escape the ring as I remember. The Idea was to prevent your opponent from escaping the cage by all means posible. It was a very bloody match.
After hearing this and how much he sounded like Hulk Hogan, I am surprised the crowd didn't start chanting "HOGAN, HOGAN.." even though it's an NWA tv show, because he literally was immitating Hogan, and I thought that if there were any "Hulkamaniacs" (Hogan fans) that they would have booed Billy for the copying and start chanting "HOGAN, HOGAN"
@xhemexx PLEASE tell me you are not that ignorant! Ogan copied EVERYTHING from the Superstar. The Superstar was doing his thing before Hogan hit puberty!
Not sure why people rag on Hogan and Steiner when they watch a Graham promo. I'm 45 and was THE hugest Superstart mark but all these guys took from each other and Hogan was 10 times the drawer that Graham or Steiner were. Let's just face facts. Also read Superstar's book. He has ZERO ill will towards Hogan. Graham stole from Ali. Who cares. Enjoy!
This is the man who chiefly inspired the young Hulk Hogan. The beard, the bleach-blond hair, calling his arms "pythons" and "the largest arms in the world," and saying "Whatcha gonna do..." It's all there. Unfortunately I never had a chance to see him wrestle. Interesting to see that the Georgia territory of NWA was called WCW even then.
@jmoon219 Graham (like most others back then) worked most of the territories. Graham was AWA and NWA areas before his WWF championship tenure. He then had a Georgia run here in the mid 80's after his 2nd run at Backlund - before coming back to WWF for his 3rd final push. Pre hip, surgery etc. Graham was pretty shot here (georgia 80's). Read his bio book. It is great!
