CAN ANYONE TELL ME A VIDEO SHOWIN HOW TO INSTALL ANYTHING ON UBUNTU 8.10..???? CUZ THAT THE MAIN PROBLEM WHICH MAKES ME NOT TO SHIFT TO UBUNTU AND SCREW XP!!! i heard alot about wine but the freakin thing cost...its not free like ubuntu...please can anyone send me a video how to do it..installing xp based software on ubuntu
ok.thanx...but can i REALLY install anything on ubuntu...not mac software..XP SOFTWARES.. plus even if i format my pc... would i be able to install pc drivers cuz i DONT WANT TO FORMAT MY PC FOR NOTHING!! even if i did...IM DEAD MEAT FROM MY DAD..he the pc for only one software...KSAfone..(i know u dont know it..trust...i dad would kill me if i dont install that) other than that..im fine..one more thing..is crossover better?
yeah but I want the real messenger that could put status and real stuff lol. I like using the Official Softwares from microsoft that look like it. :( but is their any way to put the newest Windows Live messenger on Ubuntu 8.10 cause I have Wine.
Anyways, aMSN does all the things the Microsoft version does and adds more functionality via plug-ins. I've heard people say that in many respects, aMSN is better than Live Messenger.
As for the layout, it's the Ubuntu Studio theme, which is available in the repositories. The background image is called Studio Flyer and is available on gnome-look(dot)org and Deviant Art.
It doesn't let me download, help!

@xXFR05TXx Can you be a bit more specific? Also, remember that this video is a bit old, so how things work has changed quite a bit.

I mostly meant software.
Incidentally, I just checked, there are drivers for the Deskjet. You should have been able to make it work with an equivalent driver,

Dude relax.
First of all, Wine is free. You're thinking of Crossover, which is based on Wine.
To install Wine, go to the Add/Remove menu, enable "All available applications" in the scroll down menu and then search for Wine. Simple as that.

You don't need to install drivers. Ubuntu comes with quite a handful of drivers and even fetches those that are missing if they are supported.
I don't know what KSAfone is, so I don't know if there are any alternatives or if it would work under Wine.
Crossover is the same as Wine, but it adds some proprietary software to work and you have to pay for it. You can download a trial for free, though.
And you don't have to format the entire drive. You could just make a dual-boot with windows.

So.. how do you actually install things? I've just been told to download kmess (messenger) and it doesnt even show up in the add and remove
Kandrov 3 years ago
You should try to enable "All available Applications" in the scroll-down menu of the Add/Remove menu. That ought to take care of it.

I upgraded from 7.10 actually. It's much easier to install and set up than any Windows insallation out there. Much quicker too.

i went back to xp cuz i didnt get it how to get msn on ubuntu :P

MSN is made by Microsoft, so it won't work natively. You can try aMSN or emesene.
I personally use Pidgin, since it allows me to log into multiple accounts from multiple servers.

u know u can use pidgeon wich is exactly the same and u can use your msn address in it.
