The can sound comes out in all halo vids, especially hitting the center note. Manu can't get the same sound out of the halo when fist pounding the center as the hang. The other noticeable difference are the overtones when hitting 2 notes at once. I suspect this has to do with the differences in materials since the halo is made out of softer steel, and the masterful overtone tuning of PANart. Not trying to knock the halo too much as it still sounds nice, it's the closest anyone has come to a hang
Interesting video. It makes it possible to compare Halo and Hang by comparing Manu's playing on both instruments. Compared with Manu's Hang playing the Halo seems to have a substantially lower energy. And the Halo has what I would call a can sound. Something what you can hear from a Hang only if you play it too hard.
@hangblog Hi, Manu had just finished playing a full set and was just messing around to get the feel of the Halo, so perhaps that explains your perception of a lower energy. As for the "can sound" it was recorded using only the camera mic which never does the Halo much justice IMO. My other vids of the Halo are all recorded using a Zoom H4 and gives a truer rendition of the actual sound of the Halo
@hangblog I agree... you need to put more energy into many Halo to reach its "natural voice" -- you can't tell from the video, but the result is also greater projection. It doesn't "sing on touch" like many Hanghang. There are also still untamed harmonics that give it a steely sound, which can be emphasized or eliminated based on style and touch (absent on almost every Hang I've played).
Both things are changing as the Halo evolves... :D
@meeurk He seemed to be impressed, he checked out my Hapi and my Milltone and said that he really liked the Halo and the Milltone but the problem was that if he integrated either of them into his set, it would be a big problem travelling with them all as he already travels with 4 Hangs
