the best composer ever in cinema history, many says john williams who is a great composer but rosza was for me greater and much more emotional, the music for lust for life spellbound and many others are just a little example of his greatness.....
Miklós Rózsa was a Hungarian-born award winning composer and conductor, best known for his numerous film scores. Rózsa is considered one of the founding fathers of film music.
Thanks, but where's the rest of it? And could you also post the Fox Fanfare that Previn conducts at the beginning of the show. I believe this was a PBS show called "Previn and the Pittsburgh".
The greatest composer of film music ever, and a wonderful conductor! He also wrote some marvelous non-film music, including a great violin concerto which was recorded by Heifetz.
He got his inspiration from doing research, there is a school music text book that has photographs of miklos rosza consulting with musicians from various countrys when composing film scores.[ a record that i used to listen to everyday was ravi shankars sitar conerto conducted by andre previn ] .
billyguns2 "...in the 1930s/40s/50s...the greatest music began to be written for films..."
Give me a break. Much as I, too, love a lot of it, especially scores by Hermann and Rozsa, most soundtracks were/are derivative & schmaltzy. Can hardly fault u for being bored by, say, a lot of minimalism (not that there isn't *any* great said), but there's plenty of outstanding, original music from the 20th-21st century, and most of it's NOT from films; you're listening too much to classic fm.
I read your critique of Miklos Rozsa. He was a master of classical music and classic movie music. Bernard Herrman wrote the film world's greatest film score when he wrote "Vertigo." Perhaps you would be kind enough to give us your education and music background so we can properly evaluate the phrase "derivative & schmaltzy."
Somewhere in the 1930s/40s/50s classical music took a wrong and limited turn; the greatest music began to be written for films, and this is one of the prime examples. Rozsa was a serious composer who could write inspiring melodies! Check out Heifetz playing his Violin Concerto; amazing!
I have an audio tape of this its previn and the pittsburg symphony tv series from pbs this episode also has previn conducting now voyager and psycho and john williams conducting some of his music.
It's not really the Overture (of which there are at least three!), but the 'Prelude' to the concert suite. Rozsa was in many ways Previn's mentor at MGM, and both men wrote unequalled music scores for films.
Miklos Rozsa gives as powerful a reading of his magnificent Overture to "Ben Hur." Our culture is all but dead that there is not one living composer to equal the grandeur of this small genius.
the great miklos rozsa

I'm sad I can only 'Like" this video instead of giving it ten stars. Wonderful footage, a real treat indeed.
