  • That was very interesting NP RRS.

  • good choice of music and what is the height difference between your first level and second level? im attempting to do 3 levels and i wanna know what a good height between each level

  • @nawrock It is about 20'' between levels, just seem to work well and left enough room for some good size buildings on the lower level if desired. In this case there is a work desk on the lower level that the tracks cross and we needed enough room between levels for the desk to be useable.

  • @LMB73882 kool thanks a lot

  • sick!!!!!!!

  • very nice. What is the longest train you can run up the helix with 2 Katos pulling?

I want to build one but I run 65 car trains, 2 locos.

  • I don't how long of a train we have run up the helix I think about 30-35, but you would not be able to pull 65 cars up with 2 engines. My best guess would be 4 two on the head end and two mid-train helpers and possibly a helper on the rear.

The cars we pull are weighted to NMRA standards witch is a lot of weight, and without a helper on the rear if the train breaks apart.... lookout because those cars pick up some serious speed if they get loose.

  • Update: The top of the helix now has most of the mountain built on top of it (still in the plaster stage). We have not been able to work on it in a regular basis so it is taking a long time. Once the mountain is done enough to remove the protective tape from the track I will try to post an updated video.

  • holy crap thats awesome

  • were those DD40s? the NPs?

  • The lead is a SD45 followed by a pair of U33C's with a U25C and GP7 (the last two are dummies)

  • what a lay out. cant wait to see more

  • What can I say. This is an awsome layout. Please update the progress from time to time with new videos.

  • Supurb craftsman shop here. I've seen several n scale helixes but a double tracked HO is really something else. Nice work. Maybe one day I'll get back to my HO modleing. I have all the suplies, just nees the time and room.

  • Great layout and an awesome selection of music

  • Well it's been a long time but work has once again started on this layout. The top of the helix now has a deck on it and will have a coal mine on it, track work was started on the top on 11/17/08.

  • This my friends layout and he is using a

Digitrax DCC System. We are hoping to start working on the layout again in a few weeks. This has been more of a late fall project, but it seems it's been on hold do to a broken leg.

  • what dcc are you using?

  • Digitrax

  • that is the kewlest thing ever! how long did it take for you to construct it?

  • If you have all your supplies you should be able to build it in 7 to 10 days, 14 tops. Most of the time is in cutting all the parts out.

  • oh okay, thanks. I would SOO need help if i wanted to build one..even a small helix. im not good with measuring an my layout is 1 inch short on 1 end an i remember checking the length 4 times an it STILL came out wrong. lol

  • Great job Larry & Jake. I will be in touch with you to see it in person. Talk to you later. the oldestman

  • The BN engine is a SD60M.

  • do you use helper unit to go up the helix?

  • No unless you run a long train, we have run 50 to 60 cars without helpers but the cars need to be well adjusted:coupler, weight and free rolling wise that is. But helpers would be the best way. If the cars come apart they pickup some serious speed, so a helper would prevent any runaways.

  • and those loco's......did i see one in burlington northern too?....what are they?

  • The Northern Pacific loco's are U33C's,U25C,SD45 & GP9. The BN setting on the layout is a SD60. Hope this helps.

  • thats one serious helix...i dont think i've ever seen one that size...double at that......you've been subbed....

  • ok thanks for replying and im going to subscribe so I can see it progress!!

    It looks great right now!

  • is that going to be in like a giant mountain or something???

  • Yes.. it will have a top on it for some industry and the rest will be inclosed. It is a friends layout and as it develops I will post new videos... so check back from time to time.

    Thanks for your interest.

  • thats nice work i need to build one but its holding me back
