  • @vegetams "newtown" by the slits

  • @vegetams this is a song?

  • I think its called New Town.

  • @bigboxbobby2 correct

  • Somebody said Punk was massive - well it lasted from 1976 to Sept 1977 in Manchester - the timeline is irrelevant as it changed music, my life, your life and shook up Thatchers world - so it was massive - shook up and influenced the music world at least. Personally - it shaped some of my views and future(from NO FUTURE! LOL)They were and still are great - the Slits take a bow. LU.

  • Thatcher's henchmen came to power mid 1979, punk arrived at the ass-end of a collapsing labour government ('74-'79) and was long dead before Maggie took over. Embarrassing, but an awful lot of 'punks' / 'new wavers' / 'new romantics' fondly embraced and sang the praises of Thatcher, even the Fall's Mark E Smith.. Other bands (ie New Order) toyed with fascist references and iconography. I didn't detect music shaking up Thatcher's right-wing world; which remains intact to this day, alas.

  • @DannyDesperate if punk was dead in 79,it ressurected again in early 80is with bands like exploited(fuck you maggie)and discharge and many more.so what if it wasnt mainstream it was still a great anti thacther music.and it wasnt dead in 79 anyway there were bands like slf and uk subs,do you even know what you are talking about?i am from fucking croatia and i know more about it than smart asses like you.so fuck you dickhead!

  • Thanks for the post, takes me back to my youth. I can still remember them singing Newtown and doing that dance. Excellent

  • punk in the UK was massive and socially relevant to our times- Doubt if the US took it to their hearts like we did- may have been last angry gasp of the working class- as a teen in 77 you felt it was about your life- there was disco too, of course, for smoothies- Jarman's take on punk in Jubilee here was a subjective and arty- Slits were on their own planet- not punk exactly- but hey- wasn't it supposed to be about breaking rules?

  • that barbie doll dance of hers is just awesome

  • bunch of cross dressing posers i know who'd i say was punk
  • @hearNyou

If you think you know who's punk then who is?

  • Yes, they really were as crap as I remember them. Absolutely talent-free.

  • Amazing! Thanks especially for the Jubilee clip. That poor black teddy lady . . .

  • Yeah!!!! Trash it, man!!!!!!!!!!

  • mc5,iggy pop andnew york dolls were shite.oh i take alot of drugs and oh i'm not to sure what sex i am,not what punk was about, their music was shit they looked like shit and punk was defo an english invention.choose between sex pistols or a bunch of cross dressing posers i know who'd i say was punk

  • I always found The Slits really sexy. Thanks for the post

  • HYPE.

    Elementary..........my dear Watson

  • i don't get the beginning..

  • It's from the Derek Jarman film 'Jubilee'

  • It's a dipshit view on punk rock.

  • psh. i can tell.

i thought it had a meaning to it

  • wow this is a really angry version of new town totally different from off the album

  • You ignorant twits!! Punk Rock as well as Gothic Salsa was invented in Guatemala!!

  • hahah. I like that one!

  • I remember being 15 and reading about this band in a book and thinking they were just a lame copy band just following the pistols or the clash. Now that ive listened to them I think theyre one of the best bands to emerge from the 70s punk era.

  • she sounds like Kim Gordon

  • gothicpunkshit . .you are right. . but a lot of people forget about the influence the Parisian punk scene had on us as well. it was a bit of a melting pot all coming together and bursting out of Malcolm's and Vivian's shop. ( like a spot )Malcolm thinks he orchestrated the whole thing. He likes to think that ! I think Margaret Thatcher will go down in history as the woman who single handedly created PUNK. .if you get my drift. .she certainly primed me." Anger is an Energy" ! !

  • new york dolls and iggy pop started punk not the Ramones or the sex Pistols

  • if you look back, Cave men invented punk :)

  • are you a really stupiD, The PUnk Was invented by "LOS SAICOS" , from PEru

  • I contend that it is the Who! Iggy Pop would be a close second.

  • lol

  • @birdy47 If you look even farther you would see punk invented cavemen

  • This was a concert at a junior high school, (check their height) and you'll hear the plug get pulled at the end of their one song concert. LOL!

  • What was she thinkin?

  • Punk means being par of the movement, you're not supposed to be good to play in a punk band.

  • This is not a good Slits song...Look up Instant Hit. That shit it great!

  • You only have to read Englands Dreaming to find out all about punk!

  • hahahah youtube users, and their crazy musical arguements.

    punk was 1978.

there is no such thing as punk anymore.

and it was even btwn the u.s. and the english.

so please all of you shut the fuck up and listen.

    btw the slits are terrible.

  • so what 1970's music isnt terrible?

    x

    x

  • uhhhh the slits ARE NOT terrible.

your stupid, this band is one of the main ones that inspired the WHOLE RIOT GRRRL MOVEMENT!

but you wouldn't know anything about that.

  • i am not stupid.

you twat. i dont give a flying fuck what band you hate or prefer..

i really dont want to watch a pathetic video of bashing car windows and skipping in circles.

and a shitty performance where u can barely make out the words.

    and riottt grlll movement?

    you call that feminist?

i dont really care! b/c in my opinion they suck. so fuck off yeah?

  • now now kids : )

  • This is garbage. I could make better music with a paper and comb.

  • c'mon then, i wanna hear it.

  • Wow, i didn't know the Ramones formed AFTER the Sex pistols. They must of used a time machine to plant their first lp in the shops in 1976, and when they played CBGBS in 1975 etc etc.. You live and learn, Did Dee dee Ramone plant clues to this time travelling in his lyrics? (eg. 'here today gone tomorrow', 'tomorrow the world') WE MUST BE TOLD!!!

And the lyrice to r'n'r high school, ... "i dont care about history, coz thats the way its gonna be".. -is it true??

  • PUNK Rules!!!!!!!!!!!

  • they sound a bit like a black metal band.

  • Always loved them, never realized how brilliant they were live.

  • punk started in britain. The ramones formed their band only after watching the sex pistols perform. They claimed it themselves. So accept the fact that punk started in britain and stop bittching about where it was started.

  • Listen here wanker ALL ROCK STARTED IN USA... see MC5 Velevet Underground and Buddy Holly and the Crickets for the punk stuff

  • your the wanker. dont claim everything started in usa. but punks STARTED in BRITAIN. THE FIRST PUNK BAND STARTED in usa. and from them all the other punk bands started to follow the footsteps of the ramones. but the ramones followed THE SEX PISTOLS. wanker.

  • you know real music as much as you know fornicated SHUT UP MONTY! the sex pistols are not punk they are utter crap worst fucking band ever and not in a good way either Dumb fuck bethoven motherfucker ROCK AND USA are the SAME WORD

  • Lets look at the facts you moron. When was the 1st Ramones LP? When was the 1st sex pistols LP? Look it up that will answer your question.

    The Ramones followed the pistols?HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

ALSO, When was the 1st Pistols gig?and when was the 1st Ramones gig? Look it up

What about Television?Richard Hell,The Heartbreakers,Suicide,New York Dolls? Punk is New York. No UK. The best UK punks, The Clash, only made 1 punk album before they moved on. the pistols only made 1 album. CRAP. PUNK IS NY

  • Punk started in the USA but we would not be writing about it in 2009 if it were not for the UK as it was ignored for the most part in the USA.. Punk was relevant for the UK in 1977as the country was going through social and economic upheaval. The US had its social fervor in the 1960's. By 1977 it was contented and looking inward so there was no need for a confrontational style so disco and "corporate rock" ruled..

  • Actually disco -- in the beginning -- was very much a reaction to, and escape from, an oppressive, conformist (and arguably racist) mainstream US society, as well as a steep economic downturn during the Carter years.

I agree with your point about punk's popularity in the UK being largely responsible for punk's historical impact and influence though

  • Disco (and punk to a certain extent) was also a reaction to rock music not being very danceable during that era.

  • Erm, no. Listen, I don't care who started it. It's music... You can say the US started it and Britain made it into something but that's still up for debate.

What isn't up for debate is the formation of the Pistols and the Ramones. The Ramones formed first period. Several bands formed after seeing the Pistols the Ramones were not one of them.

If you're going to argue about music history get your facts straight please.

  • they can't play

    they can't sing

    and english girls are horribe

    sorry just facts :)

  • And they can't dance neither ;-)

  • You are quite correct, they are "horribe". That's why we come over and dry-bum your wenches.

  • Punk has no nationality we should not care about where it comes from, just enjoy the music.

  • velirien, here's a little fact for you. The Pistols were the only band to get an album straight in the national album charts at number 1..the first band to do this since the Beatles. How many American punk bands can say that eh? The thing is, Yanks don't understand rock-it's as simple as that. And i'm big headed enough to say i do...Get that one.

  • lol except yanks invented rock and punk the british just help refine it, but even then the big british rock bands were just trying to American

  • personally, i don't think it's very punk to be proud of getting an album straight at no.1

  • It is if gets banned...lol

  • forgot about that; you're right

  • that was terrible. the clash!!!!

  • i like these angry ladies

  • Strange comment when u consider that all the best and most famous punk bands are BRITISH

  • Somebody doesn't know their music history.

  • Not to mention punk started in britain,

& thats were the punk movement mostly took place.

  • no it started in ny, with groups/artists like the ramones, the new york dolls, television, richard hell, patti smith who were a major influence on the british scene and many of the bands that came as a result

  • it started in england

  • Whether you think it started with the Stooges, the MC5, the Dolls, or the Ramones, punk began in America. At least know what you're talking about before you correct someone.

  • funny how they destroy the car when they need that car themselves...

  • I actually saw the slits at that time. They were widely known to be pretty shite then, but they got much much better. On reflection, it was usually the PA, or lack of pre-gig soundcheck mostly to blame for the gigs not being all that great. Plus they were still learning to play :)

  • i love this band and this vid is weird but its some sweet footage

  • que asco

  • So creative! :)

  • LOVVEEE THE SLITS..

  • My car!!!!

  • the first part of the film is not a don letts production but it is a few scenes from the derek jarman film - jubilee, which also starred. Adam ant,

  • Malcolm McLaren and his whole fucking clothing store is what turned punk from being a movement into just being some shitty fashion trend. Not to mention McLaren was a manipulative bastard as well, taking advantage of the Sex Pistols. I know that doesn't have alot to do with the Slits, but I just thought I would point that out. By the way, great video, back when punk used to mean something.

  • No McLaren = No Sex Pistols. Punk never meant anything and wasn't suppose to - that was the point.

  • Umm Punk started with The Clash and the Sex Pistols, the Ramones as well although Joey always said they were not punk. The movement BEGAN then, don't give Maclaren credit for anything. Also, punk very much had a point, and that was to get pissed off at the establishment and do-it-yourself or DYI--the very essence of Punk.

  • I completely agree with what your saying, it just seems like alot of those ideals aren't as supported as they used to be. People tend to get dress and clothing mixed up with thinking independently. I've met a few women in their early 60's who are still very much punk rock. Anyway there should be more anti-establishment and DIY. It just seems like alot of people don't care anymore which is sad. Oh McLaren is a bastard, which is just what I was wanting to point out. 100% agree with you.

  • i dont think getting pissed is inherent in punk. i consider myself a punk and i am quite content. i think punk has more to do with creativity and thinking for yourself. you don't need to hate the media. become the media. and punk began WAY before the clash/ramones/sex pistols.

  • I think you are young....too young to remember that time and place.

  • Just to join the discussion, I like the Ramones but they were never a punk band imo, they jumped on the bandwaggon like so many bands at that time. The Slits were awlful, but that was more punk.

  • Thanks of the Ramones many punk bands really starded playing, bands like the damned, the clash and so on were huge fan of the ramones for the speed and the simpliciyty of their music. The ramones came to England for the July 4th 1976 gig at the Roundhouse. This gig ignited the punk scene in England whereas there was no real punk scene in the US in 76 except in the limited area of the CBGB's. The slits were not that awfull they made some way better songs than that one.

  • That's exactly how I feel

  • That was actually pretty hot

  • I always thought the lead singer had an attractive body

  • Noooo kiddin', Sid Obvious.

  • newtown-slits-ganja-reggae-squatting-the days of my life-

    ARI-UP- wildest woman on earth-xxx

  • London beauty,

  • I love the fact that punk women didn't adhere to any of the female stereotypes or standards of "beauty" that women seem to have followed before and after punk. Why can't girls today look up to people like the Slits, who choose to be individuals, instead of looking up to the women of today, who put appearence before thought and individuality?

    And this song is amazing!

  • but didn't they still adhere to the beauty of the punk movement? Just as they didn't have to be feminine, isn't it also true they couldn't be?

  • I guess you do have a point there, but they didn't dress or act any different from punk guys

  • I don't know what you're talking about. They're all very attractive women, they don't try and make themselves look particularly manly. Ari-Up is wearing some very revealing clothes in this clip. The only way they buck any standards is by wearing leather jackets which isn't particularly progressive or regressive. Are there guys out there who would so "Oh no, I'd never have sex with that girl, she's wearing a leather jacket!"?

  • That's not what I meant. I realize that they weren't trying to look manly. When the Slits started out, men and women were disregarding standards that each gender was expected to fulfill. It actually had nothing to do with leather jackets in the early days of punk. It used to be sex clothes and hacked up clothing. Ironically, even with all that, nobody cared about sex or looking attractive. When it became a fashion cult in 1978, it became ripped jeans, leather jackets, and masogyny again.

  • that was my car!

  • Brilliant.. What a band.

  • No Slits, no Babes In Toyland?

  • Into 'Jubilee' Derek Jarman, The Slits wreck Deptford.

  • that great

  • Can't wait to see them play tomorrow.

  • ridiculous!! lol!

  • Such angry, angry ladies

  • THE SLITS!!!!

  • great intro!

and is that on the intro Siouxie?

  • what punk sounded like before it was illegal not to copy green day!

  • what the hell are you talking about

  • Great stuff!
