@KainUltima Only mars/Marth's country is altea/aritia. The continent is Aknea/Archanea/Akaneia, and things can be translated differently... Originally, the hero was supposed to be named after Mars, the god of war, but smash bros. melee translated it to a "th."

Just some advice about the Japanese only (no sub, no dub) release that you have on your site. It has saturated sound. That is whenever a character talks it sounds like they are screaming into a microphone and the sound distorts (if viewed on a waveform graph, the tops and bottoms of the waveform are clipped). Please reencode the Japanese only version and reupload to your site. Make sure your Windows Mixer input control is set right this time.

Did any of the official FE games have him named Marth? Or in the actual FE games was he always called Mars (only Marth for SSBM)? Or did after SSBM changed his name did all later FE games also call him Marth? Or did they go back to calling him Mars?

@BenHutchinson1 He was named Marth when he was loclized for Melee, before that, there was no official english name for him, and based on MARUTSU, the localization eventually turned into Marth, as the japanese TSU also stands for the english TH...therefore creating Marth..

Marth is from the first game, Roy is from the 6th game and Lyn is in the 7th game (a prequel to Roy's game). The time and place for each of these characters are unrelated. Different stories.

Maybe not official. But typically there is one correct method of translating one language to another. I'm curious, when using the correct translation technique for Japanese to English translation which is the more accurate translation of his name.

If done based on listening to the Japanese people saying his name in this anime, I for the life of me here them saying the word Marth, not Mars.

But as for the japanese letter Tsu, when spoken by itself sounds most closely like "soo", not "thoo". So by that his his name should be spelled Mars but not pronounced like the Roman war God which is pronounced like Marz. It should be spelled Mars but pronounced like the female name Marcy but without the "ee" sound on the end.

This 3rd translation (the one I just came up with) I believe would be the correct one.

@BenHutchinson1 I believe it really depends on the case. In any case I hear Mars. I just assume localization decided Marth sounded better for an american audience.

In any case, this OAV was released in 1996 (I believe) and Marth's first localized name was in 2001, so this OAV was probably translated by somehow who 'named' him after a literal translation, regardless of an official name existing or not.

And what do you mean literal? Is there actually any "correct" translation? Or is Japanese so complicated that more than one translation could be considered correct? I'm a bit confused here.

@BenHutchinson1 It's not that japanese is complicated, it's just that Western languages are far more complicated than japanese actually is, specially phonetically. I assume that the transaltor used a 'traditional' translation (I suppose 'literal' wasn't the term i was looking for), as the 'TH' sound is nonexistant, so they just approached it in the most fitting way, with a muted t 'TS' sound. In any case, it's not like they can back down from the now-official name. IMO, Marth is better thanMars

However I'm sure they game companies hire professional translators with college degrees in the needed foreign language (Japanese in this case) and years of experience working in the needed country (Japan in this case) in order to translate their game. Or else they hire pro translators from that country (Japanese people who obviously have Japanese as their first language) and who have a college degree in English language, in order to translate their games.

So such translators probably know better than me. Or at least I HOPE my games and anime are being translated by such high quality professionals. Because when I watch anime or play a game I want to know I'm getting the CORRECT translation. However when the English anime release uses one translation, and the English game translation uses a different translation, it makes me think that there is SOMEBODY who doesn't know what they are doing, and ONE of the is wrong.

First, I just got finished watching a little of this anime, then I watched a gameplay video of Taito's Dino Rex at Nico Nico Douga the same day today, and I heard the deer sound effect (at 4:03 ) used as the voice for one of the dinosaurs.

Back in the early 90's it was a trend to make OVA adaptations of a famous game franchise (and the only way for america to know about it). This along with the Ys OVA were just deemed as another Lodoss war rip-off. I think an FE TV series would be fine, I mean even Druaga has a (loosely based) tv series.

by English, I believe you mean dubbed? This is the official English release with subtitles (sounds way better then the dub.....). I have managed to get my hands on the dub.....you really don't want to hear it. This is the English official release. I've never seen the dubbed version and I've been unable to find it anywhere. The voice acting is probably better in Japaneses (being the original language of the show).

In Japanese The S makes a TH sound though too in translation to English. Fore example in final fantasy the spell "Thunder" is written in Japanese Katakana as "Sa-n-da" So "Ma-ru-su" could still just as well Translate to Marth as well as Mars.
