Guthrie has always been known to say that he was never a full-on 8-finger tapper. He doesn't like the technique that much along with sweep-picking. And yet, when he did it at exactly 2:56 - 2:59, it seems like that's what he has been doing all his life!haha!

Definitely the greatest guitar player of his time, along with Ron Thal, Mattias Eklundh and Kiko Loureiro.

Maybe he really needed a drink after his performance in your case :) In any case, whenever I see this guy play he just blows my mind with his accuracy and his approval on the Cantrell Wah further convinces me to buy one since Cantrell has already one of the best wah sounds in the business since 60s..
