  • thanks very much

  • Nice song and approached with nice feeling, the slide work is great and subtle. As for learning it you're doin a great job ! Is it a new National Tricone that you play or ?

  • Thanks, yes it is a recent National , Vintage steel.

  • hi boy

  • this is really beautiful.

  • Loved your fine effort of this old classic.

    Dean

  • I hope I can make my Relic reso sing like your engraved reso.

    Really nice playing bro.

  • Thanks zombieguitarplaya

I'm sure you will with a bit of practice.

Ironically , tonight I am sitting down at 2.15 AM hoping to scare myself and to watch an old classic movie on TV from the 1950's,

    "I Walked With a Zombie"

Wonder if there will be some Carribean Islander playing an old National in the film?

    Cheers, Dean

  • thankyou

  • Real nice playing. I love the sound of the Tricone. 5 stars. You are right about Blind Wille playing a 12-string.

  • Thanks !

Love your Statesboro Blues you sent me, great sliding guitar.

  • Very fine.

  • thankyou

  • You kickin' it, dude!

  • Thanks

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • National tricone

  • Yea, dude, this is, man, the song, dude!

    The Old McTell

  • Thanks kindly

  • beutiful. is this the one with " wake up mamma.." lyrics?

  • Yes that 's it!thanks

  • I think that you may have Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues" in mind.

"Wake up mama, turn your lamp down low"

  • Actually , if you check the history in Stefan Grossman's blues publication,McTell recorded the tune 'Statesboro Blues' as Mama 'Tain't Long Fo'Day, earlier than Statesboro, the lyrics being very similar and melody also.

    Thanks

  • Thank you for writing back. I never knew McTell recorded a song so similar.

I thumbed through my blus collection looking for that song, as I don't recall hearing it before. That's when I realized that I have several compilation albums with Blind Willie songs, and a fair share of individual artists from that era (Blind Lemon Jefferson, Tampa Red, etc), but I have no individual Blind Willie albums. I'll have to fill that void. ;-)

    BTW, you play slide beautifully!

  • Thanks, if you go onto Amazon you can hear 30 sec takes of these songs, and some have the lyrics.

I looked up the words to Mama 'Tain't Long , and they are close ,not identical.

'Wake up Mama 'tain't long fo' day', that is the first line.

I think many of the very early tunes wold be very similar in structure and lyrics and would be re-worked under other titles, but sound quite similar.

I'm only going on Stefan Grossman's book on this tune, but I suppose he would know.

    Thanks,

    DB

  • Hmm, which Stefan Grossman book are you referring to? "Shake that Thing"?

If you like fingerstyle guitar you might really enjoy Steve James. He covers a lot of country blues tunes, and he is the best slide player I have ever heard! No joke. His vocals are not always as enjoyable, but man, this guy can flat-out PLAY!!!

If you are interested send me an email and I will recommend albums to you.

    Cheers,
