Booze is BAD BAD BAD for depression. Avoid at all costs. Coffee, on the other hand, lifts the mood a little, though it can give you tremors combined with the medication. And worsen anxiety, maybe.
I've been struggling with depression for 5 years, I wanted to get into competitive starcraft but I've been in bad shape for the last six months, my girlfriend was really helping me , I was almost getting everything under control so I could start studying again to go to college, she... she died yesterday and now I'm worse than ever, I'm just focusing on not doing anything stupid, just watching state of the game vods and getting my mind out of it for now, but I'll have to deal with it some time
I have depression and anxiety disorder, just started on medication a week ago. I know exactly what you're talking about with the ups and downs. As a fellow SC2 player i have times when i get really motivated and want to practice and other times when i just don't want play at all. I never really followed you much in the SC2 scene but i do know you were playing very well for awhile then kinda just vanished from my radar, and now i know why. I will definitely be following you a lot more now. GLHF!
I quit competitive gaming due to depression, albeit not any RTS game not this still hits very close to home with me. I've seen you being flooded by messages at TL and you probably won't see this but by learning about you openly saying you have similar problems to be immediately made you my #1 SC2 player. And you were up there before too.
I admire your strength, I quit my game and the scene surrounding it. Thinking of what could've been.
You know that feeling where you would watch other pro players vlogs Tyler? Check all the views for this video. That's how many people have that feeling towards you. You got alot of support and alota love from the community bro <3
You're awesome Tyler, I think these are a great outlet and a way to have the confidence that you've communicated everything you've wanted to to your fans. You should do a post-Orlando update!
I think the response has been big enough to warrant another one of these, but I've been checking in for a month and am losing interest. I hope you continue with this soon.
Great idea for the vlogs! I really hope this catches on. If nothing else, I hope you keep doing this. You're my favorite player. Thanks for letting us all know. You're an inspiration.
How can you be depressed man... your like a pro SC2 player your married. You have a house and have fans. You have a one in kind life that i wish i could have, fans would be awsome. But no im just 20 years old living with my parents working part time loading boxes making crap money and going to a community college....
Tyler, if you are going to do the marathon you might as well do it for charity. Just run some commercials and send the money to a good cause. You can maybe help some people that need it.
man ive went threw these depression things a lot as well, and im glad to hear you talk about it because its something sometimes i feel alone about, because i hate the mistakes ive made in my life and sometimes things go really bad, then sometimes im happy. its really horrible im behind u bud, hope you do great at MLG :D, rooting for you and huk :)
Definitely one of my favourite personalities in sc2, although i'd probably say that about a lot more players if they'd take the time to vlog like this
Also don't mean to build on it and if you need outside help then get it, but if your a man then you don't mention depression out loud. Keep that shit locked up inside till you have a night with yourself and a bottle of jack and you either get through the night or not. Might sound heartless but guess what, it is a depressing world we will in. Takes guts talking about your weaknesses but its pathetic for being young and healthy with only sadness to show for it. Good luck hope you get better.
@ballssssssssssssssss Close actually California...lol great assumption. I was just making a heartless joke about depression at first but really the way I see it is, its more a personal problem you should deal with or see help for, but for me its a weak excuse for it to be considered as a sickness. Don't get me wrong I am not denying there is no such thing as depression, its just a weak and pathetic thing to get. So0 call me heartless or stupid there assumptions anyways.
@jckgrim51 Seems to me like you don't understand the sickness at all and exactly how severe it can be. Why don't you do some research before you post a smart ass comment.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Arthes Didnt mean any offense by it, I was just pointing out depression is a pathetic thing. It is pathetic if someone is young and healthy and all they have to show for it is sadness, don't you understand the meaning of being pathetic? I admit I do not understand depression nor do I classify it as a sickness. Don't get me wrong I know it sucks to get depressed but calling a emotion a sickness is somewhat weak to me. However, I wish the best for this young guy and hope he feels better.
@jckgrim51 just stop talking. You know what is pathetic? An immense amount of stupidity. The thing is you and liquid tyler are both sick. One suffers from depression, while the other suffers from mental illness. I personally would rather to be depressed instead of retarded..... however i wish the best for you~
@ytaidan Man this is entertaining, not so much the topic of the conversation but the assumptions and insults that follow. First insults don't get far on youtube, b.c who really cares what some stranger says. Second assumptions only make yourself feel better, b.c the truth is you have no idea about the person so pretty much shots in the dark. Anyways to me depression isn't a sickness more like a personal problem that you have to deal with and if needed get help for. Thanks for the wishes. <3
@Zzzzzzeer Not really. Depression stems from cognition and is a symptom of situational causes(mental as well as habitatual). I.e the way you think and surrounding variables causes your mental physiology to change in very much the same way it would do if you were doing something which made you happy which is also a chemical imbalance and not your minds natural state.
@jckgrim51 "Keeping that shit locked inside" is actually the antithesis of what any psychologist or counselor would recommend to overcome depression. Being a man isn't defined by not showing emotion, or proving that you're tough. He should overcome try to overcome it, even if it means admitting he can't do it by himself. Drowning your sorrows in a bottle of jack at night is never a solution, and neither is upholding a superhuman standard of yourself.
@totaljking12 Lol No no never intended for him to actually do that. I know being tough has almost nothing to do with being man, but it helps. However, if thats what your psychologist or counselor suggests then he might be right. I really have no idea on the subject just spoke what ever came to mind that day. I am no superman nor a man quite yet. To me a man is just someone who can protect his family and to keep them happy. The basic idea that is.. Jack attack!
Hang in there Tyler, I know how it can be far to well myself (regarding your situation). I've rooted for you a long time and I will certainly never stop.
Haha, I laughed when you said about the bar being raised for what'll cut it for streaming events, it's ridiculous but also pretty true. Once you've done all that, starcraft alone will just seem like a bit of a cop-out!
Tyler, i been thru the depression stages too. simply, the best medicine, is to get out of the house, and just have a fun outting and drink with your boys, meet girls, go club it up !!
Sounds cool, not sure about the alcohol part though. Actually sounds a little extreme, are you sure you're not sliding into a manic phase? No offence.
I think that marathon is an awesome idea. I've run races involving drinking beer at checkpoints and such which is really fun, and although you may not be able to complete the marathon it's a really fun way to set a challenge for yourself and have fun attempting it.
Also, I'm glad you're doing this VLOG thing. I look forward to your next one.
Tyler this marathon sounds like the dumbest thing ever. Is this some sorta cryptic way of trying to kill yourself on stream? Please don't drink alcohol while doing a marathon, you're fucking crazy.
@3366catch EH, 26.2 miles is less than 2 miles per hour, and I'm pretty sure Tyler can DESTROY a mile in less than 9 minutes. Pull ups are a completely different muscle group. Alcohol doesn't have the be the ONLY thing he's drinking, and he'll obviously be eating! (The ladder games are kind've the easiest part, who the hell can stand up to Tyler on ladder anyways?) He probably won't be running more than 5 miles per running session, so he can adequately rehydrate with real liquids during then!
@shoutenry Hmmm never mind about the Ladder part, the sheer time it takes to win a ladder game will probably mean he's praying for PvP's! Also, the mental stress will probably be just as bad as the physical... GO TYLER WE BELIEVE!!!! BRONG OUT THE NonY!
Doesn't sound like an especially healthy marathon with that amount of alc. But ambition & goals are good. And Tyler has that unshakable image of radiating boss/chill. So I'm kind of unsure how to feel about it.
Depression, so long as it doesn't stem from a chemical imbalance, is only a meaningless word. It will stop no man from achieving what he wants as long as he wants it badly enough. Think about what you want your priorities to be.
You rock Tyler :) But don't do that 26.2 hour stream thing! It will either kickstart another depression or you will just get tired of Alcohol/Sc2/running, and we wouldn't want that!
The biggest symptom of depression is the way one wants to set really unachieveable goals for oneself. I've been there so many times. Things like "gonna switch my jobs, gonna quit smoking, drinking, start running" etc.
I guess the best advice I can give you is to read a lot and just do something different every day, something small. :) Another one, which might sound silly is to pick fights with everyone, it really gets the adrenaline flowing.
Take care of yourself Tyler! And good luck in MLG!
The time it takes to get 26.2 ladder games + time to run 26.2 miles would take you more than 26.2 hours (adding the factor of fatigue and alcohol) ...
@AintGotNoPatience Assuming he plays from his original account - he won't be in optimal shape so his winning percentage would be like 50%, so he'd need to play 50 games!
you left your league of legends client open. lets play some time.. kidding haha i know youre busy. good luck dude im still more into bw than sc2 but ill always cheer for my bw protoss hero. i still use your pvt 1base reaver build to this day hahah. anyways good luck with tournaments man.
Definitely like the idea of vlogging, Tyler. I really hope that it sticks around and catches on for other players. 20k views in 2 days looks promising :-) Good luck for Raleigh, dude. And best of luck for that challenge, too!!!! You are a crazy man ^^
I have depression too, it sucks man. The fact that you would open up to your fans like this is amazing. I love e-sports and the starcraft 2 community, you are making it so much better with things like this. Don't ever give up. Fighting!
I think the 26 ladder wins is a bit tough. I mean you can cheat it by quitting games to drop a bit lower. But if you attempt to do it at your own level, where you can't successfully cheese very much. For anyone below top50 region player, you can't really keep much over 50% winrate. I'd assume 26 wins takes minimum 40 games, and if you attempt to rush it with faster games, it could easily take those ~50 games. Playing 50 sc2 games while running marathon in same day may not be possible to every1:)
Assuming 8 min miles, and 1 min pullup sets, that will be about 4 hours, leaving 22 hours for starcraft and drinks, without breaks, that will be less than one hour of playing for every win, good luck!!! i will be rooting for you
Thank you for starting to vlog Tyler. It is really wonderful to get an insight into what is going on with one of my favorite pro-gamers. I hope this video starts a trend in the community, like you said, would be awesome if others followed suit and started vlogging too :)
Tyler is so awesome! I don't think anyone doubts that Tyler will be a champion..the only question is when he can get into the mindset and take care of his stuff.
As a person who also has to deal with depression once in a while, I really appreciate that a well known and respected person like Tyler (well, in the sc community) choose to be out there and completely honest about the condition. I hope this will make some people understand it better and think twice before judging us, calling us lazy whiners.
you are awesome :)

replace it with say:
26.2 liters of water? To be honest it already OVER-hydrating unless you are drinking it whilst doing your run.. im not an expert so don quote me :p
26.2 chocolate bars?
26.2 magic tricks?
26.2 sets of push ups? XD
Good luck! :)

Eikli 6 months ago
The biggest symptom of depression is the way one wants to set really unachieveable goals for oneself. I've been there so many times. Things like "gonna switch my jobs, gonna quit smoking, drinking, start running" etc.
I guess the best advice I can give you is to read a lot and just do something different every day, something small. :) Another one, which might sound silly is to pick fights with everyone, it really gets the adrenaline flowing.
Take care of yourself Tyler! And good luck in MLG!

Great man but I think it's impossible -
The time it takes to get 26.2 ladder games + time to run 26.2 miles would take you more than 26.2 hours (adding the factor of fatigue and alcohol) ...

@zdravkobeykov you forget this is no moron, This is liqiud tyler!
AintGotNoPatience 6 months ago
@AintGotNoPatience Assuming he plays from his original account - he won't be in optimal shape so his winning percentage would be like 50%, so he'd need to play 50 games!
zdravkobeykov 6 months ago
@zdravkobeykov not if he plays matches while on the treadmill and eating and drinking between games

Ougagagoubou 6 months ago
Assuming 8 min miles, and 1 min pullup sets, that will be about 4 hours, leaving 22 hours for starcraft and drinks, without breaks, that will be less than one hour of playing for every win, good luck!!! i will be rooting for you

Tyler is so awesome! I don't think anyone doubts that Tyler will be a champion..the only question is when he can get into the mindset and take care of his stuff.
aznkether 6 months ago
As a person who also has to deal with depression once in a while, I really appreciate that a well known and respected person like Tyler (well, in the sc community) choose to be out there and completely honest about the condition. I hope this will make some people understand it better and think twice before judging us, calling us lazy whiners.
