Excellent stuff. I made my wind turbine using an old Bendix D.C generator from a Sunderland flying boat which I use to charge a large bank of recycled car batteries, the total cost including batteries was just over 500 gbp as I done all the work myself.
@Flamorgan Yes, efficiency doesn't really matter. What matters is money in vs watt-hours out. Most wind turbines will work until the day when there is a really strong wind. When the strong wind causes them to rip themselves part, you have to put more money in. As a result, making a turbine that can survive and is low cost in the really important issue. Car parts etc are low cost and over designed for the job and thus as just right.

I plan to, one day, make a wind turbine in the look and style of an old Dutch windmill. Obviously the propeller shaft will spin rather slowly, but that's why gearboxes were invented. :D

@JaxxBat You don't understand. Slow spinning, high torque shaft from blades goes into a gearbox, which then goes to a low torque, high speed shaft. Otherwise I wouldn't get very many volts out of it due to the low speed.
Plus the top of the structure wouldn't be able to house the design I want, while the base would.
I attempted to make a wind generator out of an old air conditioner fan unit but I don't seem to be getting any electricity. I attached 8 magnets in 4 rows around the outermost circumference of the rotor part of the motor, but even when I tested it with my stepdad's 150 mph leaf blower, it did not produce any electricity. I wonder, does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

I'm planing to build a wind turbine .. blades from 6-10 (or bigger ) inch pvc pipe ...bicycle axial and hub .. will have a ratchet at the rear end of the axial for "gears" and a plate ( which the pvc blades willl be mounted ) at the front end of the axial ... the hub will be stationary inside square steel tubing etc.building my own bridge rectifier with 4 diodes.I'll be charging 12v car batters.and powering stuff using a DC to ac power inverter .. as for a charge controller i will come later
The problem with buying a turbine is they cost too much, thus it would take years before you began to reap the rewards of your investment. Having seen all these youtube videos, it's clear one can be made for cheap, one day a company will sell wind turbines for say £200, it's at that point that everybody will go out and buy one. Until then, this is just an eco warriors dream and we shall continue to pay for expensive electricity.

This is a great video. I am moving to an area with a lot of wind and will be putting up a few wind turbines. Imagine if only 5 % of homes had one of these and how much energy would be saved.
Often these are connected to a bank of batteries with an inverter to store the electricity because the output can vary. your house is then connected to the batteries so they can be drained as needed.
Who ever doesn't like this video either works for the electrical company or is a complete idiot. WOW we all should have one installed in every new home from now on. Why not harvest the second most abundant source of energy readily available to most of us (wind). Its the obvious choice if you ask me.
Why imitate the old design?. Tubular Wind turbines are better then Fan Type. The wind turbine doesn't need to turn to catch wind because it will catch all wind from every direction.

they also have all kinds of d.c. LED grow lights and such available now that work real well ive been thinking of running a aquaponics system off of wind and solar free power fruits and veggies and fresh fish what more could you ask for :)
you dont need to take your whole home off grid maybe just add some D.C. lights and run some out door landscape equipment like pond pumps and path lighting and fans etc. etc. youll cut power cost without having to get the city involved.

No. You would have to have zero loss of power through friction (any mount at all will cause eventual shutdown) and zero power consumption anywhere in the loop, and even if that were possible that would sort of defeat the purpose of power generation. It's called the elusive "perpetual motion" machine. Even if you built one, it wouldn't serve a purpose other than novelty unless it could produce more power than it consumed. Thus the harnessing of nature hydro/coal/wind/nuc etc. to generate power.

The design is a bit noisy isn't it? I doubt many people really want to hear that all day and night. You can engineer better aerodynamics for the blades and coil pack to greatly reduce the noise while actually improving power output.

my brother has some issues with yankin on his u-know-what, like ALL the time, so what i did was tie a string to his wrist and connected it to a system like those flashlights you shake to charge. our electric bill has dropped from 206 a month to only 47.00!!! its a amazing! we do use a little bit more water, however, keeping the bedding clean and all....;)
only issue i see is the speed need to be limited they are taling aobut useing salvaged parts if it spins too fats the blade will fly off plus there is an issue with regular maintenence

@bombsaxx I like this video! I am going to build a generator on the same principal of this video. My idea is to power it with an electromagnetic motor. Something like a Bedini schoolgirl motor/generator. I think you could keep it charged during the daytime (the bedini) with a solar panel and if your power supply is big enough for it then the bedini could run all night keeping a battery bank charged. You would need to use magnets that alternate polarity, in other words electromagnets. That would make a motor instead of a generator, so it would consume electricity to produce mechanical energy rather than the other way around.
@sypher113 , i meant to say, replace the prop blades with super strong magnets this would be your "rotor" then bring in the stationary magnet that we'll call the "stator" the stator magnet if positioned correctly should push the "rotor" magnets the same way the wind pushes the prop blades now :)
no permits, no outside construction, non hazardous, not exposed to the elements, just need to do the math as far as how many wind turbines it takes to power a house and swap the wind for magnets. tada!

Its funny how were going back 2 the technology from the turn of the century.my buddies house is 1 of the 1st in the county/it has a windmill w/a small building @ its base& inside was a huge generator/is wired 2 the house & all the wirings still there.its been rewired/uses reg 110 now,but I don't get why people stopped using systems like that/ bc we now know that's the thing 2 do!btw the huge generator was taken out by the owner&moved 2 his garage/hes had the house in his family since built.

And no mention of the money you will have to spend on an inverter or the transfer switch to isolate your home from the electric grid in case of a power outage. Or the hook up for the revenue meter needed to tie into your home. Which in most cities will require a licensed electrician.

Did you guys use any special types of magnets (i.e. neodymium)? Wouldnt a cone on the front increase efficiency?Lastly, are the coils of copper wire just a continuous wire and does it matter the diameter of the coils?

3000watt's isn't going to power a home considering that's only about 25amp's of 120.. assuming 100% conversion efficiency.
My tankless water heater peeks at 120amp for example.
Most houses these days are 200-300amp service breakers.
Dont get me wrong this is cool though for 400 bucks if it works that's a very dollar efficient wind turbine.
To bad you couldn't put it on the roof of the building it would have probably given you a boost.

No. You would have to have zero loss of power through friction (any mount at all will cause eventual shutdown) and zero power consumption anywhere in the loop, and even if that were possible that would sort of defeat the purpose of power generation. It's called the elusive "perpetual motion" machine. Even if you built one, it wouldn't serve a purpose other than novelty unless it could produce more power than it consumed. Thus the harnessing of nature hydro/coal/wind/nuc etc. to generate power.

The design is a bit noisy isn't it? I doubt many people really want to hear that all day and night. You can engineer better aerodynamics for the blades and coil pack to greatly reduce the noise while actually improving power output.

my brother has some issues with yankin on his u-know-what, like ALL the time, so what i did was tie a string to his wrist and connected it to a system like those flashlights you shake to charge. our electric bill has dropped from 206 a month to only 47.00!!! its a amazing! we do use a little bit more water, however, keeping the bedding clean and all....;)

@bombsaxx I like this video! I am going to build a generator on the same principal of this video. My idea is to power it with an electromagnetic motor. Something like a Bedini schoolgirl motor/generator. I think you could keep it charged during the daytime (the bedini) with a solar panel and if your power supply is big enough for it then the bedini could run all night keeping a battery bank charged. Does this sound feasable to you? I have a lot to learn about this but am very interested.

You would need to use magnets that alternate polarity, in other words electromagnets. That would make a motor instead of a generator, so it would consume electricity to produce mechanical energy rather than the other way around.

@sypher113 , i meant to say, replace the prop blades with super strong magnets this would be your "rotor" then bring in the stationary magnet that we'll call the "stator" the stator magnet if positioned correctly should push the "rotor" magnets the same way the wind pushes the prop blades now :)
no permits, no outside construction, non hazardous, not exposed to the elements, just need to do the math as far as how many wind turbines it takes to power a house and swap the wind for magnets. tada!

They will sometimes show a multimeter with the voltage produced but can anyone show us the actual results for appliances and lighting? I get sick of just seeing a windmill spinning for stuff sake! Show us that it does have use in the home!

I don't know about that. I have watched HUNDREDS of videos on youtube on how to make your own, the rectification, the battery arrays or back-feeding to a circuit breaker, and the metering of the results. Knock and google will open the door. The answers are ALL there. Or at your local library.
