Yes but people don't arrive at religious faith 'on their own'... mostly they are brainwashed as children... I was one of them, and I did need a bit of help to rid me of the brainwashing... that help came in the form of the atheist community of youtube. I think we do have to try and help people to breath the crisp, fresh air of atheism.
Good stuff. You should also do videos where you delve into subjects like God, religion, science and politics or make another channel specifically for those.
I think Thunderfoot did rather well. The sound system could have been better, which made the debate at times tiresome.
What we need is an atheist theologian (and there are plenty of these) debating Ray Comfort, to challenge the claim that the Bible is a particularly moral book - it isn't!
Thunderfoot was right to accept there are unknowns in science. I don't think Ray Comfort ever "stomped" him!
What does morality have to do with the debate anyway? It's about who is right, not who is the nicest. If the pope Jean Paul II was the most moral person ever, would it make catholicism the truth? Of course not. It's just a last resort argument because religion is losing on all other points.
I was talking about the debate with religion against atheism. Religious people always bring up the morality argument. Didn't really watch the whole vid so maybe I was a bit out of place.
I don't think thunderf00t was stumped. I think he just saw when Ray was trying to steer towards one-way dead-end streets and did not waste time with pursuit in those directions. Obviously time was something of a factor since Ray was so anxious to get out of there at the end.
I still get a chuckle from Ray falsely crying 'strawman' as a refusal to address a valid hypothetical.
Stating that atheists were disappointed in "their YouTube god" is unfair. Thunderf00t - a man who spends his free time making videos designed to showcase the foolishness of creationists - went out of his way to publicly call one of the most notorious creationists out, and deliberately drummed up a lot of buzz about it. Naturally, those of us who had seen his previous videos had certain expectations, and many of us don't feel that his display lived up to the hype that he himself generated.
Stating that atheists were disappointed in "their YouTube god" is unfair.
Naturally, those of us who had seen his previous videos had certain expectations, and many of us don't feel that his display lived up to the hype that he himself generated.
I agree that we had expectations that were not met. The "Youtube god" comment was still inaccurate - it's not that Thunderf00t was the god we fawned over, faithfully waiting for him to vanquish evil. He markets himself as a creationist-buster, made a public challenge to a popular creationist and encouraged everyone to watch. Given the way he hyped up the event & his history, having a few expectations was reasonable. Even metaphorically, this is not a case of worshipers turning on their god.
TF clearly won.He drove RC into admitting that his beliefs are baseless and that he had no understanding of evolution. His shrinking body language in response to the explanation that speciation [is] evolution said it all.
No, he didn't agree with you. You intentionally pick condescending language to try to make people seem like hypocrites for expecting more out of Thunderfoot than they got. If people expected perfection, then those people are indeed morons. However, I think most people just expected a more interesting debate. It was a bit tame, especially when we take into consideration the amount of knowledge TF possesses.
Also, Yahweh would make a pretty shitty human; not a perfect one.
I don't understand what you're referring to here. Could you specify what it is you mean? I'm not being facetious, I honestly don't have a clue what you mean.
I wasn't disappointed. I was impressed. He spoke truthfully and honestly. There was no bullcrap with TF in that debate. I suppose I have a strange take on things, but I don't mind stuttering, and I don't mind tripping over words. It means the person has a lot on their mind, many ideas, and is not sure how to express them all. I have that problem. Add my horrible slavic accent and people don't know what the hell I'm saying. But it doesn't lessen the greatness of his words.
There was nothing wrong with TF saying "I don't know" to the questions of what happened "before" the Universe, or saying it was an unknown. He was totally right, it is an unknown. The only problem was that the discussion was on two different levels, TFs points were even registering with Ray. Maybe TF should have dumbed it down a little, but the whole point was to present two opposing viewpoints. You don't need to call Ray on every fallacy he was using to get people to think.
I agree. To tell you the truth, I respect more a person who says that they do not know than a person who makes up elaborate shit to explain whatever it is they don't know. It makes me feel as if the person is more mature and intellectual as well. It is better to say you do not know that to claim you do, when you do not. After all, even in the Christian belief, there is no mention of what happened before the Universe and the creation. Ray Comfort wouldn't be able to answer the question as well.
But that is not a total turn off is it? I know how TF feels with that. I can draw really great, but if someone is in front of me watching me, and my every move, I freak out and can't draw shit. You can't blame him for losing his guts in that situation.
No, but on the other side everyone knew that already before the interview would happen. Didn't Thunderf00t knew this? And did he achieve what he came for? It was very predictable and I didn't get past watching the first 3 videos and the last one.
I think that there are a lot of people less intelligent and with less scientific or religious knowledge that could've done better.
We kinda did want him to utterly destroy Ray, he does it in his videos, and I think he wanted more of a friend than to make an enemy. Tfoot didn't want to really push him, which was kind of disappointing.
that thunderf00t thing was pretty interesting....there were a lot of questions i WISH i could have thrown in to the cocky comfort bastard, but yeah i'd like to see the critics go on camera and do it better. it's harder than it looks.
Mr Foot did ok I reckon, he's a scientist more than anything, not an on the spot atheist bulldog like Dawkins but hey he is a lot younger. I'd like to see him do a documentary series, Sagan eat your heart out.
I like that you show both sides some respect. I'm so tired of people saying "religious people are stupid" or "atheists are stupid". We walk different paths in life, that's all.
A spiritual robot. wow The human being is an engineering marvel and soulful being. Yet some seek to understand the divine in a machine. Mystifying. I think God would feel less offended if a person tried to understand the divine looking at animals.

Watch my video on flakeman called BAD GAIJIN PARENT just put it up a 4 hours ago. The people who don't get it are a riot.
Hey are you still reading the bible?I did a vlog on religion and god but i took it down after a couple of days I've been doing that alot lately.Oh well, trying to get my YT mojo back.Take it easy.
Ray kept using the "God did it" line, and the "It was written" line to "prove" his statements. Which is ironic, when he asks thunderf00t where he gets his information from.
Also, TF has shown his face in several of his videos, mostly on the beautyintheuniverse channel though.
One reason why religion is so pervasive is that you're indoctrinated from a very young age. Not only are you told that the ideals are good but you celebrate religious holidays that help you associate the religion with something good or do fun activities in the name of your faith. In some faiths they also reject family members that convert.
In countries, like mine and other Scandinavian countries, where religious indoctrination is not as accepted, religion is not as strong or common.
I get the impression that religion is more generic in Japan, like people go to temples and pray but don't really care as much about promoting their specific sect. Or is there a ton of conflicting denominations?
Not really. Or rather nothing that interferes with daily life. Maybe there are inner conflicts that exist -- political struggles that occur behind the scenes -- but I know nothing of that.
Well, I use to have the origin story of Turbo up, I need to put it back up. Turbo is not really a robot. He was a man named Wayne Wilson. They took his brain, and put it in a robotic body. So, while his body is robotic, at his core, he is still human.
I disagree with some of the thing you said, but I hate arguing with people, so lets just agree to disagree, LOL.
Yeah, I don't want to argue with you either. I am impressed with how far you've come with your animation skills and wish you the best. Thanks for stopping by.
OK, I'll watch Ken Tanaka's video. You pack a lot in a few minutes, I'll say that. People also compare people who show unfortunate attributes to animals they don't like. "So and so is a snake," etc.
Creationism v. Evolutionism is a red herring at the end of the day. I fit into the latter category, but each group can grasp the concept of stewardship, and we can come together and focus on that. There is a scriptural basis for stewardship. I wish we could work together toward that end.
I'm going there now. I've been offline most of the day ... lightening strike to my new computer to blame. I'm working with an old laptop and that's giving me headache. I'm going there now though. This does have my attention.
OK, I've watched the series. Briefly, Thunderfoot says that the reason the future is bright is because of the growth of knowledge. Ray Comfort will invariably see this condition is a sign of end times. The is representative of the series in this term: Consensus in their argument is impossible. Ray contradicted himself at some point on the matter of punishment, but that's not material. It goes back to what I said before. We may be on the brink of disaster, environmentally speaking. (con't)
They could have used their time and talents to a more productive end, given the amount of views their series received. After spending time on the TEDtalksDirector channel, and after pondering the latent, positive power of the YT community, I'm left a little cold to think that these men would presume to be so arrogantly devoted to a very old argument. There is no conclusion and they know it. I'm glad to see the series though, and thanks for directing us to it.
Not a pleasant journey :D? ... Was the best process and thing that ever happened to me in my life, at least for me :P .. Made me interrested in getting an education and how the world actually works... At the age of 17 so a little late for my taste ;< ...
i think thunderf00t did a brilliant job. if you read the side notes for the talk, you see that maybe ray was really affected by the whole thing. whats the point? imagine if someone like ray suddenly denounced religion and stopped selling his shtick as a result of such a debate? unlikely since he still has a buck to make.. but imagine if his loses his chutzpah and falls flat in future programs/speeches etc.. it would be awesome.
Sound's like you've created a great religion for yourself Victor.
About the "Where did God come from" statement.
By asking that you're assuming a limited God, creationist believe that God created time, therefore exists outside of it, outside of the time box. Its hard for many to understand this because we perceive everything through time.
But in order for God to be omnipotent, he cannot be bound by space/time. No beginning or end.
U can believe in the beginning nothing, or big bang, ur choice
I enjoyed the discussion, but I thought that TF didn't call Ray out on his bullshit enough. Although, anything TF said was ignored and reflected with god did it.
Just please please please realize that Ray comfort is not the best of what Christian thought has to offer. The really thoughtful ones tend to think that spirituality and things like evolution are not mutually exclusive. Again I point you to CS Lewis.
I tried watching that video on coughlan's channel. But, I really can't stand either of those guys, so it doesn't matter to me who won points or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if both claimed to have come out ahead.
Robots & puppies saved the day on this video imo. lol
I don't adhere to any particular faith, but I have my ideas about faith, and I believe in an afterlife and a 'God', if that's what you want to call it. I've suffered in terms of my faith, but I didn't stop believing entirely.
Scaird people need comfort. like a little kid when its in fear. THE END
I AM GOD AND SO BE IT!
DO NOT QUESTION ME. also part of my master plan was to create gay people so my planet reduces population. I AM GOD AND SO BE IT! Also a side note I see in the future more than 10 gays and dykes will thumbs down the word of ME!
Well, I think of it as a relaxing place, A new world like earth, exactly like it :D, but not exactly. It's a different place but everything earth has, it has. And the cycle keeps continueing if you die.
I am glad you don't treat spiritual people like they're stupid, like some atheist.
You seem very sad about being an atheist?
Is it that you are afraid of there being a God? Or that you wont live up to the expectations.
I too have struggled with Religion, Spirituality, and God. It appears (to me) that most people fear challenging their beliefs because the life is built on and around their beliefs.
I just remembered some nihonjin believe that Jesus did not die on a cross and was buried in a local village. The villagers have some kind of music ritual for him. I think I seen it somewhere on Youtube.
Religion is fine with me as long as it is not mixed with politics. That is a very dangerous combo IMO. I watched the thunderfoot video and didn't even notice he was stuttering. Oh well. It seemed as if he was almost talking to a wall. Nothing he said made any difference and it seemed as if Ray wasn't even interested but just there because it was his job.
i read a quote once a long long time ago...i dont remember it exactly but the gist of it was that if one person believes it they're called crazy, but if a lot of people believe it its called religion...who knows right but it kinda makes sense
couldn't hav said it better myself

Interesting.
Well I guess I'll watch Thunderf00t and decide for myself then.
cguevara12 2 years ago
Ray kept using the "God did it" line, and the "It was written" line to "prove" his statements. Which is ironic, when he asks thunderf00t where he gets his information from.
Also, TF has shown his face in several of his videos, mostly on the beautyintheuniverse channel though.

LOL! Why should I give up? I'm doing great! And I LOVE pissing off losers like you!

One reason why religion is so pervasive is that you're indoctrinated from a very young age. Not only are you told that the ideals are good but you celebrate religious holidays that help you associate the religion with something good or do fun activities in the name of your faith. In some faiths they also reject family members that convert.
In countries, like mine and other Scandinavian countries, where religious indoctrination is not as accepted, religion is not as strong or common.
kkirT 2 years ago
Interesting. Had to imagine a country like that.... though Japan's system is not as .... religion heavy as it is tradition heavy.
Gimmeabreakman 2 years ago
I get the impression that religion is more generic in Japan, like people go to temples and pray but don't really care as much about promoting their specific sect. Or is there a ton of conflicting denominations?
kkirT 2 years ago

Thanks for telling people about the video, man.
Take it easy.

Yeah, I don't want to argue with you either. I am impressed with how far you've come with your animation skills and wish you the best. Thanks for stopping by.
Gimmeaflakeman 2 years ago

I watched one though four. i haven't been to bed yet, and I'm falling asleep. I'll have to come back tomorrow to see the rest. First impression:
kalacaw 2 years ago
OK, I've watched the series. Briefly, Thunderfoot says that the reason the future is bright is because of the growth of knowledge. Ray Comfort will invariably see this condition is a sign of end times. The is representative of the series in this term: Consensus in their argument is impossible. Ray contradicted himself at some point on the matter of punishment, but that's not material. It goes back to what I said before. We may be on the brink of disaster, environmentally speaking. (con't)
kalacaw 2 years ago
They could have used their time and talents to a more productive end, given the amount of views their series received. After spending time on the TEDtalksDirector channel, and after pondering the latent, positive power of the YT community, I'm left a little cold to think that these men would presume to be so arrogantly devoted to a very old argument. There is no conclusion and they know it. I'm glad to see the series though, and thanks for directing us to it.

i think thunderf00t did a brilliant job. if you read the side notes for the talk, you see that maybe ray was really affected by the whole thing. whats the point? imagine if someone like ray suddenly denounced religion and stopped selling his shtick as a result of such a debate? unlikely since he still has a buck to make.. but imagine if his loses his chutzpah and falls flat in future programs/speeches etc.. it would be awesome.

I've suffered in terms of my faith, but I didn't stop believing entirely.

religion its used for comfort.

AnimeFreeMan 2 years ago
I just remembered some nihonjin believe that Jesus did not die on a cross and was buried in a local village. The villagers have some kind of music ritual for him. I think I seen it somewhere on Youtube.

Religion is fine with me as long as it is not mixed with politics. That is a very dangerous combo IMO. I watched the thunderfoot video and didn't even notice he was stuttering. Oh well. It seemed as if he was almost talking to a wall. Nothing he said made any difference and it seemed as if Ray wasn't even interested but just there because it was his job.

i think its somewhat dangerous to personify a robot beacuse when you do, you also can de-humanize people.
IndianHill504 2 years ago
i read a quote once a long long time ago...i dont remember it exactly but the gist of it was that if one person believes it they're called crazy, but if a lot of people believe it its called religion...who knows right but it kinda makes sense
