@johnnycheck99 Spin it really hard while getting through the crease really quickly. Swann's got tricks that other offies usually don't have, though, his grip is different and enables him to give a really big flick, and consequently more revs on the ball. That translates to the ball being able to turn at pace since he gets the required number of revs going in the shorter time that results from bowling quick through the air anyway.

If you look on this site there is a 48second video with Swanny explaining his grip- he has pretty large hands and he tries to bowl off the inside of his knuckle of his first finger AND his second finger. Not everyone can do this. I have small hands so i cannot hope to bowl that delivery!!!

@johnnycheck99 Graeme is a finger spinner. I bowl my off spin as wrist spin and leg spin as wrist spin too, so I am good at wrist spin, but some of my deliveries have a bit of finger spin too.

How do you turn the ball at a decent pace like that? Is it a combination of body action and a proper release? Good off-spin is surprisingly hard to bowl.

@johnnycheck99 Exactly, Swann's big skill is being able to turn at an attacking pace. Most finger spinners have to sacrifice turn for variations in speed, which makes them good at containing but not always good wicket takers (in fact look at the Ashes where even he found it difficult to take wickets on pitches without turn).

other leading spinners like ajmal or harbajhan have some variations such as doosra or topspinner but this man has just got one thing, THE OFFSPINNER and he kicks every batsman's butt with it.

How do you bowl off-spin at a decent pace like Swann? Do you need a fast arm action- similar to Glenn McGrath but trying to spin the ball as well ?

@johnnycheck99 It's not the bowling at pace that's difficult, but the spinning the ball at pace. A good action is vital if you want bowl spin with pace. Trying to spin the ball at that pace as an offie is very hard, as the ball has less time to grip when it pitches.

My advice would be to practice lots, trying to get lots of revs on the ball while bowling at a comfortable pace, then slowly increase the pace while keeping the high revs on the ball.

I did yeah, something in response to Swann will only make an impact in if he learns the doosra, which just can't be right. An he was bowling semi doosra's in the pakistan tests. I think, they certainly turned the wrong way.

he bowls it from the front of the hand like a legbreak with the forefinger imparting spin, but I think he's more effective when bowling orthodox stuff, outside off stump forcing batsmen to play against the spin.

any way you gotta consider the difference in the skill required to spin the ball as a finger spinner and a wrist spinner. the wrist spinner is bound to get more turn. And plus, swann has a high arm action compared to warney's side arm.

all said and done - i still feel though warney's original was better

Amazing ball. But to be fair, barring the Indians most countries in the world are poor players of quality spin. SL and Pakistan are okay, but even they had trouble against Warne. The key is to use your feet, people who stay on the back-foot and wait for the ball are generally playing with fire. Tendulkar pulverised Warne in his hay-day, and I'm sure he would have pummelled Swann as well. Swann is definitely the best spinner in the world atm.

@oosrg : Warne was bowling over the wicket and was much closer to the stumps. Swann is bowling around, is much away from the stumps because a right hander bowling around is at a disadvantage anglewise, so he actually had to turn it quite a bit from that angle, almost as much as warne, which is amazing for a finger spinner.
