I love the sound. my choir has been saying for months, it is a great song, if it werent for the lyrics because if you had to sing about a baby seal and sharks, well lets just say it wounds strange just as words with no music
im conducting this in uni in about 6 weeks eeek! start rehearsals in about 2 weeks. first thing ive ever conducted and wat makes it that but scarier is that our lecturer for this class is Paul Mealor (royal wedding composer) nice to have him back in the uni :)
it sucks. i love kung fu panda (i actually enjoyed the sequel far more than the original), but i also wish the white seal would have come out. why must they sacrifice one movie for another? maybe they'll consider making the white seal again in the future. oh and THIS MUSIC IS SO PURTY!!!! :D
i totally agree with u bought the money thing and eric whitacre is amazing. but at the same time i and everyone else at the university are very proud of paul for how far he has come this year. hes worked very hard and u wont find a nicer man anywhere. but ye, waste if money. x
im conducting this at uni this semester for my conducting class :) cant wait to get started on it. problem is tho my lecturer is paul mealor (the guy who wrote for the royal wedding) and i think eric whitacre is kinda his competition lol
This is stunning, i cant believe how gorgeous this is! we attempted to sing this in my choir but achieved nothing like this! this is absolutely mesmerizing! much better than most of the songs in the hits right now! :) beautiful.
When my band Director showed us this, then read the letter written by Eric Whitacre and it resulted in Disney studios saying they chose to make Kung Fu Panda instead, I about had a conniption fit... This song (and the movie it was based around) would have sold more copies than any other from Disney, just because of what it represented; but no, we got a fat panda with an obvious and predictable ending, and now they're releasing a sequel!
@AllMuttGirl Well, they planned on making a Disney Movie based on the short story, "The White Seal" from the Jungle Book. The story starts with a mother seal singing to her baby seal a lullaby...and this was the song that would have been the one she sang. But, no...Kung Fu Panda, I guess...
Sang this in a Choir concert 2 weekends ago! Absolutely beautiful song!! Apparently, we got a lot of comments like, "That made my day! Such wonderful kids! Loads of talent!" and "Oh my word, this people made my cry! What a beautiful group!" Nah, we just have a good selection of music!
They were going to make this into a movie, but they made Kung Fu Panda instead. I love this song. We're singing this song in my choir class this year.
I remember last October when we went to San Diego and saw the seals sunning them- selves on the beach. This piece will always remind me of that wonderful time with my wife and daughter. This is a great CD!
@LuigiKwok You know that Whitacre wrote this for a movie that Dreamworks was going to create? They decided not to do the movie and did Kung Fu Panda instead.
We performed this in our winter concert 2010, and it sounded nothing like this. This is how it should be performed. Perfectly balanced and powerful basses, and just beautiful. Ashamed of my old choir? Definitely!
I love this song. me and my choir are doing it for our winter concert in a few weeks too. By the time we're done all of the womens section is half asleep.
It´s a beautiful piece, but they´re horribly out of tune in some parts. No shame in that, practice makes perfect. And who would not want to keep practicing this?
@Strawkitty11 You'd be surprised just how well you can do with the right amount of practice, determination, and passion. My group performed Water Night last year and we had about 25 students but we sounded so much larger and better due to everyone's love for the piece and the practice and patience we all had. Good luck on this piece if you are doing it. Eric Whitacre's pieces are very challenging, but they are so worth it once you put it all together. :)
The Rose-Hulman chorus is singing this as part of our Christmas program. When I first read the lyrics, I thought I was gonna start crying during rehearsal.
What is it about Whitacres music that touches everyone even deeper than they think they had their deep and people need to cry? Nowaday's mystagogue. Though born-again christian, I must admit that he found the pythagorean music od spheres which heals the pain hidden in the unconcsiousness. Mystagogue
my choir at WHS performed this song at State and the judge told us he heard this song all day and it was the first time he actually understood the meaning of the song....needless to say we got straight 1's which is the best score we could get....we won 2 sweepstakes trophies on my senior year.....i absolutely love this song :)
I remember the first time I heard this I was studying and genuinely had to stop and just listen. Ended up in tears. I really want to do some Whitacre in one of my choirs :(
It’s like the feeling of joy and pain and pleasure and peace and sadness all at the same time. This peace is the best piece I have ever listened to. I believe some things are sent directly from heaven to the composer’s ears
I sang this in my junior year of high school (SATB) then again my senior year for IMEA District fest. (SSA) I am just about ready to go to my new choir director this year and BEG her for us to do the SSA. I feel that's the only way to make women's chorus bearable (I'm one of those choir junkies that likes the full sound of SATB or TTBB, Despite not being eligible for TTBB...)
@charsin135 i dont understand how thats funny, can u not sing high? im a soprano 1, if u cant sing up in the galaxy of nowhere u shouldnt be a soprano...thats common sence
@footballgirl4ever12 Are you by any chance auditioning for the Florida All-State Choir? I attend FSU and my director is using us as guinea pigs to test out All-State pieces, lol. I'm looking forward to singing this, too :D
It's really strange, but now whenever I read a beautiful book I hear this book going through my mind naturally, and it makes the story suddenly beautiful to listen to.
this is pheneomenal! beautiful! i actually first heard it on classic FM but i didn't know the name of it or who it was composed by.It took me moths to chase this ONE song down! it was to good to lose and i've finally found it! i can now enjoy! :) x :D.........
I haven't sung one Eric Whitacre piece and not fallen in love with it. The Seal Lullaby, Sleep, Five Hebrew Love Songs, Cloudburst; all amazing! Plus everything else he's done, too.
So we are singing this in A Capella Choir right now and I am a junior. My friend got me a halo reach action figure for my birthday. I decided to pull it out for the first part and last part of the song when there are not singing words, just notes. It is so epic and totally sounds like Halo reach or could atleast be in the game! Like you if agree!

@finnie97 Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,
And black are the waters that sparkled so green.
The moon, o’er the combers, looks downward to find us,
At rest in the hollows that rustle between.
Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow,
Oh weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease!
The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee,
Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas!
