  • Too many rich Germans with nothing better to do it seems to me. Why don't they pay for the damage caused to Malta during WWII instead????

  • @1stREMESquaddie More like too many criminals in Cyprus with nothing better to do than slaughter wildlife to me.

  • who cares theres plenty of birds

  • why are they doing this to them

  • Trapping birds is a tradition on the island, and it is permitted in Malta as far as I know... Trapping 20-30 birds for domestic use shouldn't be banned but because it's illegal, they are very expensive (about 5 euros each) and this makes people catching them for making money.. I think that trading them should remein banned...

  • @savvakissss A lot of traditions are harmful, and mindlessly perpetuating a tradition simply because it is a tradition isn't that intelligent, now is it? Also, no it is not legal in Malta either. It is illegal throughout Europe for the simple reason that it does a lot of harm to wild species. End of story.

  • Ok, I agree, a lot of rare birds are trapped as well, I think the most effective way to limit bird trapping is to find and report the luxuary restaurants birds are served. Since bird trapping was banned they became very expensive (I know it's hard to believe but some species no bigger than 200 gr are sold about 5euros each!) 90% of birds trappers do it for making money. Before the ban they were so cheap that trading them was limited. serving wild birds is most urgent to be banned in my opinion!

  • @MsStratis ellinas?

  • Scum of the earth these trappers need to be strung up in a tree and left to die

  • @hoppydoffton You don't understand , it's a tradition! It's because it's illegal that makes those birds so expensive... If using less number of traps was legal, the problem wouldn't be that great because they wouldn't trap birds for trading... I know people who became millionaires from bird trapping because it's illegal and they worth 5 euros each..

  • @hoppydoffton so does ur mom

  • These are not only maltese, greek or Balkan Birds...most of them are migratory birds which stay the summer in northern europe and go to south in winter. While we are protecting them with millions of euros to enlage the lean numbers of rare species these mindles traditionalists piss on it. We are not growing them here for your plates we are not in middle ages anymore where natural resurces and animals were endless;open your eyesthe birds are not your property you can destroy without concequences.

  • The poor beautiful birds... I love to watch the local birds of my area and none come as close to the beautiful colors of these birds... what the fuck is wrong with people to eat these poor little birds??? Chicken aint good enuff?!?!?!!! Then to stoop to the levels that these trappers do, set loudspeakers with the birds call in order to lure the birds into the traps next to them?!??!!! what needs to stop is the demand for them!!! Does humanity have no heart what so ever?!!??!!! sickening!

  • I was gonna cry when i saw the poor owl :'(

  • I'm 100% greek cypriot and this does not represent me at all-Pls ignore or the little and big boys that still insist in this shamefull practices:they are boor (euro) village boys. But yet you can't compare cyprus to china and other similar countries which are 10x more barbaric.

  • When God decides to send lightning to destroy the world, will start from the Germans. why, why so many Jews who have killed - rape - do not burn them save anything.

  • americans and british kill people everyday in front of our eyes and you are making propaganda for a traditional hunting that existed for hundreds of years. get a life

  • @th3o46 @lampr1ana So it's okay to commit crime then? No, it isn't.

  • @th3o46 Its illegal ! your own bloody government made it so reh ! they used to burn witches but we became more civilised... I believe fortune telling is still banned in Cyprus? you dont own these birds they migrate across Cyprus from one country to another. would you care to join the rest of the world in the 21st century...get a life? yeah while morons destroy others wild creatures in the belief its natural to torture them on limesticks...

  • .!.

  • .!.

  • come to ayianapa .....we have too much limesticks .

  • and, by the way, do any of you wear leather shoes...? Hmmm, I suspected as much......

  • @yervantoudin Just curious, but what does leather have to do with songbird trapping? I don't see leather producers getting their hides by using a larger equivalent, such as, say: bear traps or something similar. Do you?

  • @yervantoudin usual uneducated malakas reply, think of someting that makes sense reh

  • Yummy, though! Not the pickled ones - those are more of an acquired taste.

  • The cruelty, selfishness, and greed of ignorant humans never ends. I hope they can stop or come close to stopping this stupid illegal trapping in Cyprus.

  • I am astonished!! I have corresponded with a reasonable ecologist. My hat off to you sir. This is not meant to be sarcastic. I know about the tuna/dolphin problem.I eat substainible or farmed fish. I should really be on your side but I tend to accept other cultural practices. I have visited all 6 continents and thus have become tolerant of others and their cultural practices. This i really waht I am trying to communicate.

  • Anyway I am done with this. I have my views and you have yours. Ain't democracy wonderful. ;)).

    Good luck with your crusade.

  • @panace11 Cheers and best of luck, disagreements aside. ;-)

  • Why do you differentiate between domesticated and wild animals? They all suffer pain. Look at some of the youtube clips about how domesticated animals are raised and slaughtered. Also see the documentary called Food Inc. It may change your mind about the acceptance of consuming domesticated animals. I would like to point that the only animals I eat come from the sea. So whilst I am not really a vegetarian I am more veggie that most. I repeat, either complain about all animal cruelty or none.

  • @panace11 I'm not a fan of inflicting pain on any animal, however the larger issue is not the life or death of individual animals, but the survival of species' populations for posterity's sake.

About your sentence on consuming animals from the sea alone, be careful about tuna (for one example). Overfishing is a problem too, and Blue-fin Tuna in particular is faring very badly as a species.

  • @panace11

I laugh at people saying they are against animal cruelty or eating animal meat. Last time i checked, plants are also considered living things. How do you know they don't feel pain and they don't suffer? So eating plants is not considered as causing pain to a living thing whereas eating animals is considered causing pain. A wild lion killing a zebra is considered nature but when a man kills a cow to eat it it's considered inhumane and people should be vegetarians and blah blah blah.

  • To register pain an organism needs a central nervous system, = brain, nerves, nerve endings. The nerve endings register the change (e.g. change in heat, change in shape like being cut etc) , the nerves transmit a signal to te brain and the brain sends back a signal to the area affected. Result = pain. Last time I checked plants do not have a central nervous system. Additionally If you read my posts you will see that I am not against eating meat. I guess you education stopped in the 6th grade.

  • I accept your point about non edible birds. If would like to think that the Cyprians check and release non- edible birds. I go to Cyprus at least 3 times a year. I love the Cyprians (Ayia Napians excluded). They are warm and extremely hospitable. I was once invited to retrieve some birds from nets. The guys I went with released all non- edible birds, and I do not think it was done for my benefit.

I imagine that not all trappers do this, and if any legislation as needed it would be this.

  • @panace11 Agreed, Cypriots are in fact on the whole nice people. And I cannot speak to the individual practices of each trapper. However, why trap at all? These birds can be easily domesticated, thus circumventing the problem. But I've never met a Cypriot who would accept that as a solution - no idea why.

  • We are part of nature, and on top of the food chain. I really cannot get worked up about a few (million) birds.

What it really comes down to is if the Cyps trap and eat them Ces't la vie, I do not have a problem.

Either protest about the suffering of all animals or none.

People who differentiate between pretty species and others make me sick. Sheer hypocrisy.

  • @panace11 As a point of fact, you can see in the video that few of the trapped birds are, in fact, Ambelopouli (Blackcap warblers, in English)

  • Why is it a cheap trick? Facts are facts. What is so special about ambelopolia, as opposed to pheasants/partridges//grouse/ducks and chickens, they are just birds with bird size central nervous systems. A bit like yours in effect.

But if we talk about numbers of Amb, more than 60% reach their destination, hardly extinction levels. As for the legal side, this was caused by some do-gooders being appalled by seeing these birds trapped. Many of the directives from the EU are pure excrement.

  • @panace11 It's a cheap trick because ambelopoulia are not domesticated as pheasants/partridges//grouse/ducks and chickens, nor do those other poultry practices kill >1 wasted bird (just killed and thrown out with the garbage) to each Ambelopouli. Among the wasted birds are occasionally bird species that are, in fact, vulnerable or threatened species.

  • @panace11 the Cypriot government made netting and limestick illegal not what you term 'do gooders'. perhaps instead of just visiting you should live there for a year or two, you might think differently..you would certainly have a better idea than the one you have now...

  • One final comment to all the non-vegetarians, stop eating meat and then you can have an opinion. The only comments that I can accept are those from vegetarians as they are already committed to spare any animal pain.

And please do not use the extinction argument, it's Darwinism.

    I truly abhor emotional ignorance.

  • @panace11

Trying to change the topic to the laws of other countries or to poultry practices is a cheap trick, and besides the point. The trapping for Ambelopoulia is illegal for a good reason - I encourage you to actually read the EU/Cyprus Birds Directive.

The "extinction is Darwinism" is a new argument to me, but that's another false attempt to justify wholesale destruction of the natural world.

  • Additionally I have consumed blackcaps around 15 years ago in the Isle of Wight in the UK. Yep, in the UK. Will not do so again but that is my choice. When the world is converted to total vegetarianism then you will have the right to condemn the Cypriots. Until then, spare me your hypocrisy. I see no difference between farming animals for the table or hunting them. Pain is pain, no matter how the animal is slaughtered. And have you ever seen how chickens are raised, or been in an abattoir.

  • North west/central Europe (Germany, Belgium, UK, Luxembourg Poland etc) hunted animals include boar, deer, pheasants, partridge grouse. No one overtly complains and furthermore it is legal. Boar and deer have a more highly evolved central nervous system thus experience pain at a higher level.

    UK, fox hunting for SPORT.

USA. as for Europe, and many more species.

    China/South East Asia?

CABS, = German organisation?, put your house in order and then maybe your hypocrisy will be tolerated.

  • @panace11 you really know a lot _ Foxhunting was banned years ago in the UK by PUBLIC PRESSURE. how would you know that no one complains in these countries? you didnt even know fox hunting (or any hunitng of mammals with dogs) is illegal!! your opinion no longer holds merit im afraid

  • What a shame ! What a terrible shame... I am disgusted and so so sad. Birds are internationally protected. All thise traps are illegal. What do the police ? What are the lawers ?

  • FUCKING HIPPIES !! x'D

  • thats the crapy turkish side of cyprus the greeks dont do this

  • @TheDioshina

i'm not turk even greek ,but i know the greek ppl are nice ppl civilised, and it had to be turkish who do that

  • @TheDioshina Cape Greco, Cape Pyla, Ayios Theodoros - the places where this takes place - are all on the Greek side.

  • i have a blog which is trying to make people who have captive birds from nature to let them go back there

  • But youtube service cut this from using it with link in my blog beacause they asked from you for this.I woyld be very pleased if you let this to me.

  • hello friends.this is very terrible thing happen to birds .i put your video on my blog jk21.yooblog.gr to show people these very bad things happen to make them try to stop this .

  • Emeis enna tromen ampelopoulia akoma je na erti oullos o stratos an mas ta piannete reeee A.C.A.B.

  • Sixaritiria stin astinomia gia tin epixisrisi tis ston Άγιο Θεόδωρο!!!!

  • i dont agree with the nets and the traps but can i ask u something ppl?? and pls answer honestly... are u vegetarian?? i dont think so... and u emperor stay to ur country which is better for u and ur family...

  • @MaRiSep91 Nope, I'm not vegetarian. But that doesn't make the bird trapping okay. The reason is because it kills almost ALL birds that land in these traps. Every year, rare and endangered species are killed in this way, and this must stop. Over 150 different species are caught in total with these traps, not just the one species (Blackcaps, or Ambelopoulia in Greek) that the trappers want. It is VERY destructive to wildlife.

  • ive been to cyprus its a shit hole

  • @emperormiester your mother is a shithole not cyprus

  • FUCK YOU . THE BEST THING THAT CAME OUT OF GERMANY WAS HITLER .

MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND COMPLAIN ABOUT TURKEY INVADING AND OCCUPYING OUR ISLAND AND THE TERRORISTS STARTING TROUBLE IN

MACEDONIA IN GREECE . IF I SEE YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU TWAT .

  • keep going men! this is good

  • @apoelfanatic Eh, don't answer, I already know the answer: there are at least hundreds of you violent criminals around Paralimni it seems. You're an embarrassment for Cyprus.

  • @apoelfanatic ellinas?

  • @apoelfanatic Big man. In my country we laugh at little pricks who kill little animals. People like you are also killing tourism in whatever god-forsaken Mediterranean country you live in. You see, people with money who travel also boycott countries that are cruel to animals. You need to understand that the world is watching.

  • sti bastardi li vorrei avere nelle mie mani!!

  • dgfdhghfdg

  • @kakos67 OK Tell you what go to the SBA's and try it there and we will see what happens....

  • @saabturbo16 If they are bulletproof nothing is going to happen otherwise they will be heros too.

  • Basically, I cannot in good conscience choose between liking Cyprus and being a lawful resident here. Some Cypriots apparently think that I should "respect" the police. I think that's wrong - I should respect the law. When I see the law being broken, I should say something. And when I see the police being very slow to react when I say something, I should complain about that too. I CANNOT respect Cyprus if I look the other way when I see crimes being ignored.

  • You think it's okay for the Cyprus Game Fund to ignore trapping in Cyprus because they should enforce fox hunting in the UK and other crimes?!?!?! You should think before you speak.

  • Or are you saying that CABS doesn't care about crimes against the environment in other countries?!?! That's just as stupid - go visit their website, for instance, where they describe their campaigns against France, Spain, Italy, Malta, and a lot of other countries.

  • first of all, calling my opinions stupid indicates your level as a person. furthermore in cyprus there are laws against trapping and we do not expect from you to solve our issues. there is a green party in cyprus too you know. and reading your comments about "corrupted cyprus" indicates again that you are BIASED against my country....... so no arguement by you could be taken into serious consideration

  • That's insane. I'm biased for thinking that the Cypriot authorities should at least try to fight this crime???? No, you're biased for thinking that it's okay for the Cypriot authorities to not care.

  • And my level as a person? Why shouldn't I point out that it's stupid to suggest that it was okay for Cypriot authorities to ignore crimes in Cyprus because they should be looking for criminals in other countries?

  • do you actually have proofs for saying that the cypriot police is corrupted? do u have evidecence to support your claim that they ignore crimes? if you have then you should give them to interpoll or the european council or something. but if you dont have then you are a criminal of making incorrect accusations against a DEMOCRATICAL POLICE OF A EU MEMBER COUNTRY.

  • and by the way, do you have any kind of official licence to enter people's properties such as backyards and farms???? do you know that this is an offence???? if you have suspicions against a civilian nobody gives you the right to take the law into your own hands. this is a key factor of DEMOCRACY. and yes the owner has the right to force you to leave his property. Again only the legal police force of a country may investigate in people's property by having a court-licence.

  • Do I? No. But the law enforcement authorities do. And it doesn't matter if it is on your property or not, it is still illegal and you should still be punished for such things. They're crimes, afterall. The real question is why are you defending criminals? Are you one of these thugs too?

  • Much of the time they overlook crimes that they know take place. That is, they allow these crimes to continue. That is corruption.

  • it seems to me that you have no evidence to back up your arguements. you simply can't accuse anybody without evidence. Cyprus is a democratic republic either you like it or not. and we trust our police force either you like it or not. i challenge you to give your evidence concerning the corruption of the police in any appropriate inernational or european authority. otherwise YOU ARE OBLIGATED BY THE LAW OF THE COUNTRY YOU ARE CURRENTLY LIVING TO RESPECT THE OFFICIAL AUTHORITIES.

  • and by the way you should at least RESPECT THE COUNTRY WHICH HOSPITABLES YOU.

  • Oh but I do. I just won't say that everything is perfect about Cyprus. My main point is that it's very bad for Cypriots to allow such criminal activities to continue. But more specific to you, why are you biased against this law? (Trapping is illegal, afterall). And why do you defend criminals?

  • haha. i am not biased against any law. i am just telling you that the proper thing to do is to cooperate with the official state to meet your purposes rather than accusing them of corruption. otherwise you are breaking the law and you show no respect to the country where you live. and by the way why are you biased against the laws????? (entering properties without the will of the owner is illegal in this country. the same way is illegal to make accusations without evidence)

  • No, the proper thing is for the official state to actually enforce its laws. Until it does that, the state is corrupt for allowing illegal activities to continue.

  • ok, since you have no evidence and you accuse my state and its legal authorities without any restrainments it's is simply meaningless to continue our discussion. but i am telling you for the last time... the one who breaks the law it is you and not me.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I'm breaking what law? Getting desperate, are you? But for the record, I'm not saying that you're breaking any law (that I know of), I'm saying you're defending crime. And evidence? Seriously, there's no need to lie - the problem is getting worse again in the last 2-3 years. visit my website at migration-dot-wordpress-dot-com and see the "Poaching FAQ."

  • breaking the law of illegal entrance in foreign property and accusations against the legal authorities of a democratic country. I am telling you again. it seems you hear only what you want to hear. anyway i am not answering back until you have some SERIOUS EVIDENCE to back up what you saying. you are just saying "corrupted cyprtiot police.....bla bla bla....they ignore crime..... bla bla..... EVIDENCE. DO YOU HAVE ANY???????

  • Oh, you're accusing me of illegal and unlawful entry? Why are you making this stuff up? First off, only the police and game fund have that right, as I've said and you forgot you dimwit, and I have not violated that. Second, you don't have to go to private property to see limesticks. Just go to the public areas of Cape Greco or Paralimni in May or September as I have (for birdwatching). The limesticks are all over the place. In public.

  • And evidence? Are you stupid? What do you think this CABS video if not evidence? Are you blind?????

  • HAHAHAHAHA. You are funny afterall. YOU ARE STUPID. find a lawyer, give your "evidence" and take the case in court. but you should know smarty that videos are not allowed in cypriot courts as evidence. Do your best smartass..... You have NO CHANCE of proving your redicoulous case because YOU HAVE NO ACTUAL EVIDENCE. bye and good luck.......

  • Either you like or not............. this is CYPRUS. you are a foreigner here and you live UNDER THE CYPRIOT RULES.

P.S: we respect out nature too. we dont expect by an american to save us.

  • No, you don't respect nature, or you wouldn't defend limesticks and mist nets, would you? Also, living under Cypriot rules is rather pointless when Cypriots like you get angry at the thought of following their own rules and laws. If you don't follow your own laws, why should we?

  • I have no response. That's brainless drivel you just wrote.

  • no evidence + no proofs + no response = no case

    face it.........YOU HAVE NOTHING

  • LOOK at the video you moron.

  • hahahahahha. dont you get it you stubborn american????? i am telling you your video is no proof by the law of the country where the crime is commited.... YOU HAVE NOTHING. If you had you werent going to argue in internet, right? instead you were going to have a fight in court. NOTHING. notha. zero. YOU HAVE NOTHING. You are just a desperated "world protector" like the US goverment

  • And so your going to pretend that it's not happening?

  • i am not pretending anything. you are the one chasing a "lost" cause. we are not living in an angel world you know.. we are living in a democratic society where accusation should be proven before penalties are paid. If you have the power and the proofs to do that, I CHALLENGE you to do it. just stop you childish behaviour ex "corruptes country, no love for the little birds, mean people, criminal cyprus ect........ IT' S NONESENCES.

  • I don't know if it's a lost cause, but I do know this isn't an "angel world." This is an ugly world, with people like you getting upset at the idea that Cypriots might actually have to follow this law one day.

  • you dont get it, do you????? i am following the laws of my state and i expect people to do the same. if you can prove that some civilians break the law then you should follow the legal procedure against them. SIMPLE AS THAT. I follow the law and the legal procedures. DO YOU??????

  • If you expect people to do the same --- follow the law --- you wouldn't be arguing with me, would you? You'd be just as upset that trapping continues as I am.

  • anyway, i am not argueing anymore. there is no chance to communicate. i am speaking about evidence and you answer with philosopghy. GOOD LUCK

  • No you're speaking about technicalities of the law. I'm speaking of what's right in front of your face - the VIDEO. It's plenty of evidence for any person not in self-denial to realize that illegal trapping takes place and is easy to go and see.

Continue denying it all you want.

  • ok i cant believe i am still writing to you. I know that trapping takes place in cyprus since i live here my whole life. i never told you it's not taking place. but YOU are trying to prove that and penaltise those who do it. SO YOU HAVE TO GO BY THE BOOK AND FOLLOW THE LAW AS YOU EXPECT OTHERS TO DO. YOU SHOULD FOLLOW LEGAL PROCEDURES.

  • what is annoying is that you call "corrupted" the whole police force of cyprus. THIS SHOWS NO RESPECT to the country where you are living. and yu should know that Cyprus as any EU member state was under investigation prior the entrance in the union MEETING ALL CRITERIA INCLUDING NON CORRUPTION OF THE POLICE AND THE STATE. Thus it is atleast shamefull of you to accuse this country of corruption. i expect your apologies on that if you are not selfish to admit your error.

  • Let me get this straight - you admit that trapping happens, and you admit that the police do almost nothing about it. They knowingly ignore crime. Is that not the very definition of police corruption???

  • NO, you keep falling in the same trap. You are putting words in my mouth. i never told you that the police is doing nothing. I am telling you that you should cooperate with the police in order to solve the problem instead of throwing dirt in police name. But you should know that cyprus has limited funds and a lot of issues to deal with. ex. illegal turkish invasion, the financial crisis, drugs, serious criminality ect. so a priority is given in other issues.

  • The police does its job fairly well? I've never seen them out there - how are they doing their job well if they're never out? The only time they ever catch someone is when someone reports it (which I've done on several occaisions), and *if* the police then come quickly enough to witness it themselves, then *maybe* the criminal will get a fine. If that's "doing a fairly good job" to you, then you have low standards.

  • We're talking about trapping. Not hunting.

  • Again, you show that your reaction to this crime is that it should be allowed to continue. Shame on you, for defending crime.

  • I don't respect Cyprus? I respect the LAWS of Cyprus very well. You however have the utmost hatred for people who want you to follow the law. Where is YOUR respect for law and order in Cyprus????

  • And yes, shame on you for trying to defend the police for ignoring crime.

  • Speaking for police work concerning all issues, I'm not the one calling the police corrupt. RIK1 (CyBC) has been reporting on their corruption periodically since the "Al Capone" scandal. Even Cypriots are calling the police here corrupt.

  • You admit it takes place? Great. However you said that there was "no evidence." Why would any rational person believe that trapping takes place in Cyprus if there is "no evidence" as you said? Answer: Of course it happens, and of course there's plenty of evidence that it happens.

  • @pao13a no thats true about videos not being used in evidence - just look at the video of those three students being beaten up by 6 police officers for 45 minutes - they all got off!! you really wont accept anything bad about Cyprus will you?? like the saying : A cypriot knows what a Cypriot knows, and what a Cypriot knows is right!'

  • @cellsnbirds i agree with you about most of the things you have said. I am a cypriot and yes I believe that killing this birds and especially capturing them with this way should be stopped. But I also have to agree with @pao13a that entering other peoples's properties is illegal without having proper licence. Also describing cypriots as a barbaric race just because of the actions taken by the minority of the people is wrong. If that were so than every single race would be barbaric!!!!

  • @Abramis93 First, on the trespassing charge, the judge ruled that the CABS people were in fact *not* trespassing. Second, viciously attacking people is *not* civilized.

  • @cellsnbirds ok if you say so i believe you :) for the matter of trespassing. But if you say that we cypriots are barbaric and not civilized because a small amount of cypriots does this kind of things while the rest is just fine than what should we call germans? or americans? or all the eastern countries that have done things so bad that they have changed the world as we know it? As I have already said I am against bird trapping and many others too. So stop refering to us as an unsivilized race

  • @Abramis93 Actually I have serious grievances with the American government too (I am American). Some of the stuff the US does in other respects is just as unacceptable as some things (like this) that the Cypriots do. And as it seems that we agree that these things are unacceptable, I guess you just don't like the choice of words? Fine, I can replace "uncivilized" with "lawless," since the police are inept at enforcing these laws.

  • @cellsnbirds Well it seems that we fully agree now :)

  • Comment removed

  • @pao13a your country ? take a look at comments in your own press - and frankly no one give a hoot about laws in Cyprus especially Cypriots! bird trapping is ILLEGAL end of - EU LAW - you wanted to take EU money But just carry on your cruel lifestyle? well sorry thats not how it works

  • @pao13a Are you one of those sportsmen who throw their dogs out onto the motorway at the end of the hunting season if they havnt done the job properly? please dont deny it happens, its in the Cyprus Mail every year about this happening.

So if others do it it makes what happens in Cyprus OK?? no -Dont worrt about other countries, Malta got as big a fine as Cyprus did last time ..oh and by the way FRoxhunting is banned in UK and has been for three or more years - by public demand.

  • THIS IS TERRIBLE

  • Thank you cellsnbirds for answer. When I was just a child I've seen a flock(15-20 ex) in a bush and I don't know if its possible to be black and white flycatcher(I think is not possible because it was winter and it was snowing much in that period and I think it was a flock of snowbuntings, but that birds in my mind are similar with these flycatcher). The flycatcher are feeding only with insects or in the winter ieat seeds? Thank you! Best regards from Romania! C.

  • No problem. Snow Bunting would be very uncommon as far south as Romania - they're an Arctic species - but I think it's possible. Flycatchers do eat some seeds and leaf-buds, but yes the majority of their diet is insects. Glad I could help.

  • I read that snowbunting came in winter in south est of Romania(I stay in south, but near south east ) and its quite possible to see these birds in hard winters. Thank you for answers.

  • What bird(white and black) is at 1:29? It it snowbunting? Thanks!

  • No, it's a black and white flycatcher. Because of the state it's in, it's impossible to identify to the species from this video, but it is either a Collared Flycatcher, a Semi-collared Flycatcher, or a European Pied Flycatcher. The differences between these are very subtle. And the conservation status for Semi-Collared Flycatcher is very bad, in particular.

  • Take responsibility for your illegal actions and quit whining about why you think it's okay to be criminals, for crying out loud!!!!

  • why are they called limesticks ? what are they made of?

  • Lime-sticks are twigs, about 50-70cm long, which are covered in an extremely sticky glue made by boiling up the fruit of the Syrian plum-tree. These sticks are placed in bushes, or sometimes inserted into the ends of bamboo poles, to provide very inviting perches for birds.

  • not only that this has been going on for centurys do you honestly belive some of the officials helping you are not in on it .people will not stop cos of demand so why not try some kind of farming concept

dont get me wrong i am all for saving the planet i have seen you page and i agree with you totaly but one day you will rub some one the wrong way and it will not end well be carefull

  • Of course officials are in on it. Cyprus is corrupt, nothing new there.

  • The overfishing of the Med is a huge problem as well. No one is pretending it isn't.

Still, maybe one can only address one destructive crime against ecology at a time...

  • you say ''destructive'' which i think is wrong these lot are not using chemicals or bio hazzard materials and the more you rip up one mans nets it makes more go out setting traps because the price go's up...do you know now since this has started the north side traps more of this birds than the south and sells them not to mention they have clocked on in lebanon and are doing the same thing

  • Of course it's destructive... estimates are that 75% of the birds in a field full of limesticks are killed, to say nothing of mist-net usage. That's ecological destruction.

  • you estimate? are you sure ALL the birds caught are killed or are they set free again ?maybe in shock but no more than being attacked by a bird of prey ......its been going on for ''hundreds'' of years but in 100 years man has ripped the earth apart

  • I'm sure that maybe one poacher in a hundred sets a few free here and there, but otherwise, yes - I've seen a field full of limesticks with my own eyes, so yes I believe those estimates.

  • This is disgusting and barbaric.

  • Cyprus is my home now. The environment in which we live matters. Resources and nature should not be abused so recklessly, it is not infinitely renewable.

Why don't you eat cats if you are so hungry that you need little birds to eat? There are a few strays here, and easier to catch.
