i stil think this film is underappreciated i was able to watch it again without any attachment to the actors as was my 1st viewing of the film n i respected it all the more,one may'v seen the italian film white nights which followed dostoevsky story more closely,the protagonist in that film is m0re alienated than the one in the hindi film, but both films were simply brilliant in their rendering of the story

@cthxx I totally agree with you. I was so surprised to find out that it was so badly received when I found it such a beautiful adaptation of the short story. Not to mention superb acting, eventhough they were newbies at that time. With the beautiful sets, songs... I do agree that this film is underappreciated.

@jazzer53 i think majority of indian audiences are rather narrow minded, they cudnt understand the ending n the problem is that there is much too much emphasis on the script or the dialogue in bollywood films such that the art and poetry of a film becomes lost, rather than appreciating this visual phenomena that slb n crew created, people were upset that it wasnt a happily ever after, they cant get that not every movie has to subscribe to the alls well that ends well formula!
