Ill explain it better. You have Americans who file for disability,bankrupcy or otherwise. They are no longer registered as looking for jobs. They are not reporting in. Thus 950Million americans exisist 340 have jobs. The others do NOT have jobs. All others are either children or on disability,Bankrupt,or living on the streets. All attempts to get work have failed. In Canada we have a lot of un-accounted people because Sub-contractors do not contribute or apply for Government provided Employment Insurance, so we are left out of the statistics. I don't know if this is the same in the US but it counts for a lot more unemployed than is being reported.

That's true, I'm an American, we are not fooled by the Federal Government unemployment #'s, we are very close to 20% if you count the people who have stopped looking & those people who are working part time who want full time work. With GM in bankruptcy, we can expect an added 2.7 Million people soon to be unemployed.

Then to make things even worse, people who have found jobs but are only making under 10$ per hour. Employers don't want to pay or can't because they're trying to protect their own existence. Even if people are employed, if they don't make enough to consume, the system still fails. I always tell people don't listen to the news, just look around you. Talk to people. When you reach out to the community, you get the clear picture. It's getting worse.
