  • @bytesback Good idea but I think I'll just stay here with you all, makes me so happy!

  • @3eahor3e Excellent, pull up a sofa and grab a drink.

  • Can't get enough of this!

  • @3eahor3e Would you like to just pitch a tent in this video ? save all the work getting here ;)

  • The first minute of this is pure musical beauty. It is an absolute pleasure to have it go through my ears and into my brain. This is probably the best band on earth...at their very best, with an amazing orchestra at their backs

  • Perfection!

  • This song is about alcoholism and mental illness as far as I can tell. It's a powerful song, one of the best from the Seldom Seen Kid album.

  • @danmarmaladeand09 I think it's more about someone who's got problem that they keep to themselves instead of sharing, meaning he "grows his own brambles"out of his way of dealing with the problem. "Chivalrous shambles" implies they think they're doing the right thing by keeping their problem to themselves, but their cure isn't working. They turn to "booze" and fall in with a bad crowd as a result. The narrator just wants his friend to leave that crowd and share the problem- "sing again".

  • Just can't stay away!

  • Here I am with tears running down my face.

  • I can't work out who got the best of THIS deal. Elbow are great in their own right. The BBC orchesta are great, again in their own right ...but TOGETHER they are sublime....It's about the only time this year I'm glad I paid my TV license and I'll keep paying as long as this is what we get for our "buck".......SUPERB!!!

  • Puta la wea linda :,,,,,,(

  • 0:00 - Oh man, one of my absolute favorite Elbow songs, live with a symphonic orchestra and choir. I wonder how touched I'm going to be by this.

3:45 - The river from my eyes, I can't stop it

5:49 - My eyes are blood shot and my hands are shaky. God damnit Elbow.

  • Simply my all time favourite band - they've always been brilliant, right from day one, great to see the world catching up. Lotsa love, MyBuryVest.

  • not allowed to say 'focus' on television before 9pm

  • Beautiful

  • Like the previous comment i to heard Elbow on the T.V and what a blessing they should be up there with the best of the best perhaps in time they will get to where they should be to where they belong, only if there is justice in the music world.

  • Elbow+Orchestra+Choir = magic.

  • any number of these recordings can make my chin wobble. special stuff.

  • what a band ! saw them 1st when they won the mercury music prize ,was blown away by them, and still am . Hope they never change ! love you elbow

  • If people want to hear the "fucker" bit, then they should be good and buy the CD/DVD combo ;-)

  • This is Amazing.

  • i think guy garvey looks like buzz lightyear

  • I would love a big bear hug from Guy Garvey!

  • at 0:13 Guy doesn't sing the word focus.......It does sound like he was about to but he didn't :/

  • @shawgirl57 Focus ??!! Do you mean fuckers ? They had to leave it out because this broadcast before 9PM, cant have the little kiddies getting upset.

  • @bytesback ok thanks, my bad!

  • ok i listened to this beautiful live version now can never listen to it again without the amazing orchestra

  • Radiohead is clearly different music. It's more complex and interesting, where as Elbow is just generally pleasant.

  • please let this be the future of music, world peace by 2012 and it starts with inspiration from elbow.

  • This is such an incredibly beautiful song. Probably my favourite Elbow track (and therefore, by default, one of my favourite tracks of all time).

  • This performance got me into Elbow one night when there was bugger all on the telly when I got in from the pub - "press the red button to see elbow live at Abbey Road" - why not? I watched the whole concert like 3 times in a row then bought the album the next day. Guy Garvey is one of the best lyricists I have ever encountered, up there with Nick Cave and Maynard James Keenan.

  • @sonicwingnut I had the same thing, I just pressed the red button by mistake !?!! Best Mistake I ever made

  • @sonicwingnut Same thing here; I saw this clip over a year ago and was just so taken aback by it, and it still has the effect on me today.

  • @sonicwingnut Why can't we receive BBC Entertainment in the Netherlands???? :(

  • pure perfection.... one of the most beautiful / sad songs i know

  • pure fekin braw!!

  • Apparantly my pastoral tutor in college was in the audience during this performance. If that's true, she's officially one of the coolest people I know.

I'm also going to be singing either this song or 'Lippy Kids' for my next assessment in 3 weeks time. Can't wait!

  • The whole Album is dedicated to Bryan Glancy who was a good friend of the band and very influential in the Manchester music scene. He died at a very young age.

  • did they have to block 'fuckers'?

  • @smitty618 Well this was originally broadcast on a BBC Radio 2 in midday so I guess terms of service made it so...

  • @ZookanProductions oh right didn't think of that...

...I do want to here the fuckers part though

  • @smitty618 He should've said 'muckers' in its place :P.

This is one of my absolute favourites off The Seldom Seen Kid. Lyrics strike such a chord.

  • I just started listening to Elbow a couple months ago (never really heard of them before then) and now I'm obsessed with them. I thought Asleep in the Back was the best cd i had heard in a long time but The Seldom Seen Kid may be rivaling it.

  • Absolutely amazing, such a timeless album.

  • lool my dad was the sound engineer for this :P

  • @Alannbitchh Well assuming that's a true statement, he did an absoulely fantastic job. It is a stunning piece of work by all concerned including the 'techies'.

  • @thehalfcut Thank youu :)

  • 3:45 pure awesome

  • shivering as far as i can tell... sorry a bit late

  • You know, I've had difficulties with depression and alcoholism myself, and this song really, really sounds like how I feel sometimes - like they took the deepest hurt in me and made it audible. Breaks my heart every time I hear it

  • Was this the song they made because of the death of his "friend"? Or was that another song...

  • @darkassasin66 It was " Friend Of Ours"

  • @bytesback

Have to disagree... this is definitely about Bryan Glancy.

  • @darkassasin66 this song´s about a a friend who have drunk to much at that time. that was that what Guy´s thought first about his song. He´s asking for an advice in this song for his frind. But then, at the pruducing of the song, he noticed that this song was about himself.

"I think when he's drinking he's drowning some riot."

    You mean

  • @darkassasin66 It was also Grounds For Divorce. The death influenced a lot of the songs.

  • @darkassasin66

When I saw them at the MEN Guy said that sometimes you have to tell your friends off when they are behaving

like a dick or something along those lines. Obviously about a friend who drank too much and hung around with the wrong sort of people. I don't think it was about a dead friend.

  • @darkassasin66 think it wasnt "Frind of Ours" but "Grounds for Divorce"

  • pure brilliance.

  • Sensational - I mean that! Reminds me of an amazing night a year ago in Llandudno, stood at Guy's feet in one of the best live sets I've ever seen. Atmosphere was electric.

  • Does anyone know if the lyrics are "A beautiful, quivering, shivering shambles" or "Beautiful, quivering, chivalrous shambles" i've seen both interpretations of lyric websites

Amazing song and whoever wrote the lyrics has clearly been affected by alcoholism at some point

  • According to the lyrics in the case leaflet thingummy its "Beautiful, quivering, chivalrous shambles"

  • @bytesback.....a beautiful,greying,shivering shambles.

  • edit; oh no it is a beautiful, quivering, chivelrous shambles....beautifully poetic. Guy could piss all over all the "classic poets."...darn these 42yr old ears....

  • @bytesback This is what i love with Elbow, they get the intelligent conversations going :D

  • @IntenseHeroes I'm 99.9% sure it's chivalrous.

  • yes, like looking at yourself from outside.. makes sense to me, also cause of the line "when will "my Friend" start singing again"

  • to me it's about a guy talking about himself, you know the way people will say my "friend" has a problem and such

  • @peaceric Yeah I was wondering if he was talking about himself in the third person as well, I think it would make it more poetic if he was talking about himself

  • I totally wasn't expecting those sopranos to come in, but when they did, my whole body shivered.

  • ...gives me goosebumps...simply wondrous, resplendent, perennial....(bbc shouldn't have bleeped out the 'bad' word however)...amazing band....

  • Saw them at the Hurricane festival 2008. But the festival idiots put them on Sunday Morning. It was a brilliant concert nevertheless but I always thought that seeing them at dusk or during a starry night would be perfect and anyway, how ignorant can you be to not make them a main act? They definitely made 2000-2009 a musical decade worthwhile.

  • @sickcellmate true comment mate best album from 2000-present

  • i like this band before station approach and still do

  • Billy,apparently it's personal.......

  • Listenin to this band for the 1st time and am in awe... incredible!!!!!!

  • JJJJJeeeeeeeessssssus. Bliss.

  • this is absolutely amazing. this band are on par with radiohead

  • @myphoneisretro agreed, so much. radiohead used to be number one for me, and i know they're two totally different bands, but there is something about elbow that is just massive. i've been a fan since asleep at the wheel--i saw them open for goldfrapp on her felt mountain tour here in the US and was like 'who the hell is this', and by the time the set ended was completely in love with them. for me, they surpass radiohead these days.

  • @myphoneisretro Completely agree. They just deserve as much exposure as Radiohead.

  • @JoshUnderscoreGlenn

Can you believe they were support for bloody Coldplay in 2005. There is no justice in the world !!!!!!

  • @myphoneisretro Indeed, a sharp observation.

  • @myphoneisretro They put Radiohead to shame, for me. RH are up their own arses, Elbow are not (yet)....

  • @myphoneisretro the ONLY band on par.

  • Funny thing is, most of the lyrics in Elbow songs can be said in a normal tone and pace while still making total sense, grammatically and otherwise.

  • great stuff. it reminds me of a Pink Floyd track

  • This song is absolutely beautiful... one of Elbow's best. Guy's an amazing singer and lyricist, and this band is just plain amazing.

I am in love with this song..

  • lol im still trying to figure out what the lyrics mean

  • @BillyTheTapeworm

It's actually quite easy. He's singing about his friend who's an alcoholic and seems to drink to hide something and it's breaking his heart to see him slip further away.

  • The first 51 seconds sounds like it should be the start of a Bond Theme. Anyway it is excellent, the song is excellent, the album a brilliant piece of work, lyrically and musically.....they must be immensely proud.

  • tears my heart out for reasons not up 4 discussion xxx

  • I am in true awe, what a beautiful performance... I have found my new musical obsession... Thanks for postin' this!!!!

  • starlings is magnificent. this is terribly tortuously haunting brilliant

  • anyone know where I can get this performance to buy on DVD or CD?

  • Yes, look in the info.

  • Elbow's most beautiful song and almost as good as the Kloot. You know the score Guy...

  • absolutely, incredibly beautiful

  • This is one of my favourite Elbow songs, and one of my favourite songs in general :D:D:D

  • You should google the main theme of this new album... Is awsome, you will love him a lot more, it's a band called Elbow, he's not a singer at his own. :) [I don't have pretty good english, sorry]

  • lyrics are genius

  • ahhh :) new favorite band/singer/whathaveyou. Magnificently magnificent.

  • Bravo... ; )

  • this guy is my new favorite lyricist

  • Yeah, he's wonderful.

  • You can actually hear the line - at least the echo of the line 'Fuckers'. He definitely says it.

  • It's there on the CD, but right at the start of the DVD they show the Radio 2 logo, perhaps it was transmitted live, before the watershed? that'd explain it.

  • does it not seem obvious that there are times that an artist uses the full and even vulgar extent of the English language and it should not be discussed because the artistic merits for the entire piece.

  • i think this is one of those chunes where the use of the word "fuckers" is just and very much part of the song and should remain uncensored, mad as that sounds.

  • very emotional !!!!!!!!beautiful

  • "I think when he's drinking he's drowning some riot"

    .....what incredible lyrics

  • A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.....so haunting....

  • It's a shame that the "Fuckers" line was censored. I mean, I'm not one who'll go on and on about how censorship takes away our right to "be human" or something like that, but I think that line is really quite emotive, almost crucial to the song.

  • I think he censored it himself.

  • I just got done watching the DVD of this, and it is incredible, but I noticed that it definitely is *not* censored, so it must've been done for broadcast.

  • My favourite Elbow song.

    *Heart flutters*

  • heart flutters? that off the first album? ive got the others and i canr remember that one?

  • Reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide soundtrack.

  • THX Elbow!

  • from Argentina....wow...sends shivers down my spine..

  • Marvellous song and performance. Shame that the applause is cut short.

  • Awesome. Hairs tingle up my back, legs and arms on certain notes everytime.

  • my god i love it. Words, music.. (mm)

  • Just listen to what he is saying.

  • just ...... amazin ! great song , strings, vocals and especially lyrics !

  • I wish I could keep Elbow locked in a tiny box that I could wear around my waist and take them out whenever I needed to be reminded what life is for. But I can't. So go ahead everyone, fall in love with them too...

  • Isn't that an MP3 player :)

  • Ha, you are correct! What I should have said was I want the living, breathing, ORGANIC Elbow. Recorded music does not do them justice. But I suppose my Ipod will have to suffice.

  • @bytesback haha LOL

  • his didn't show up in a search because of the low view count but thus is by far one of the best performances on youtube.

  • This song reminds me of my mate! Except when he drinks its like hes drowning several riots!

  • awesome song...although i didnt like the fuckin censorship that he used...but its still ok!

  • just the best song thats about it:)

  • I'm from Argentina, but I love these guys. They are AWESOME. Too bad I only heard about them two months ago.

  • Absolutely beautiful tune, so haunting and my favourite from Elbow.

bytesback, you have a few mistakes in your lyrics by the way. Its "booze" not "bruise" in the second verse and its "pour out the rain" instead of pull. otherwise, thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks for that

  • I'm impressed. Very intense, really makes me stop and take notice. This is really good....

  • My favourite track off the album. So powerful, full of emotion. Truly stands out in my opinion.

  • I totally agree with you.

  • It is about the seldom seen kid's addiction.

    R.I.P Glancy pants x

  • this song is about the lead singers alcohol addiction... he said he uses "a friend of mine" because thats what people do when they dont want you to think they are talking about themselves

  • Interesting - where did you get this from?

  • I grew up with Garv, and trust me, he's never had an alcohol addiction at any time in his life. Could have been another song about Bryan Glancy.

  • elbow, julle is befok. liefde, van suid afrika!

  • I find this song so moving. Not sure why. Such a shame they had to censor the word "fuckers" - aren't we all grown up enough to be able to hear that and not throw a fit? Oh well. Beautiful stuff all the same.

  • i agree it shouldn't have been censored, its an important line in the song which he sings with alot of meaning i think it kindof took from the feel of the song however the beautiful instrumental after makes up for it

amazing song and an amazing singing voice.

  • This pasticular song is amazing! like when it gets into it at the end, so good :P

  • Why. Do. They. Drop. Fuckers? It's what makes the song so poignant!

  • fuckers

  • na, the reason they didn't get as much media is because they kept getting dropped from their record labels for effectively doing what they wanted to do and playing/writing what they wanted to.

  • Wow. This version is fantastic.

How did I not know about this band until so recently? Seriously, HOW?

  • I'm a fairly Virgin elbow fan (??!!) myself, I accidentally pressed the red button one day and the rest is history.

  • haha exactly the same! heard that they'd won the mercury prize and i thought i'd give it a listen.. this was the song that was playing when it came on.. :O! love this band sooo so much.

  • They've actually been together for 18 years - I'm guessing they like to kee a low profile. But finally they're getting the attention they deserve!

  • I remember growing up in Bury and going to watch these guys play at the Met before they became Elbow...they had talent, it was obvious. And yes, although they've been dropped a couple of times, I think now is the time they will prosper, they're in prime position to do anything they want. And if the music's this good, then people will take notice. I love that people call them depressing, but I think this album is the most inspiring music I've listened to in ages.

  • This is by far my favourite song on the album, I prefer the album version though I think, the production on it is extremely good. The bit later on when the music starts properly again makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end every single time..

  • the lyrics to this song are just fantastic

  • Oh god, the lyrics. Oh god... so meaningful. Jesus...

  • Stop getting so excited, you'll do yourself an injury at your age !

  • I'm only fourteen...! xD

  • Ah, so you may be telling a slight fib on your profile then :)

  • Haha! I forgot all about that!! :D Whoops...

  • The Main Part, When The Orchestra Really Starts Qualifies For A Bond Tune. It'll Be Hard To Come Up With Another One Like That.

    Amazing.

  • Great!

But one thing bothers me: Why didnt he sing the 'fuckers', or was it edited out? Either way, its motherfucking ridiculous, that word-censoring, i mean, the amount of violence and sex that we see today, and all we censor is WORDS? fuck you motherfucking shit asshole this is quality culture dont fucking cut words out of it

  • Naked people covered with blood in art paintings, but if theres an ugly word in music, lets edit it out, THE FUCKING CHILDREN MIGHT GET TRAUMAS, FOR FUCK SAKE

  • In the UK you're not allowed to swear on TV until 9PM, this concert was available at any time of the day, so no swearing allowed.

At least he just left it out and didn't replace it with some thing else.

  • Yep, but I'm saying that kind of laws are idiotic in the first place. Is there a restriction in UK that you're not allowed to show highly sexual music videos until 9PM? I don't see how swearing can hurt children. And they learn the ugly words from somewhere anyways.

  • There is a law saying that nothing sexual etc until 9PM. However, as you say there are loads of very explicit music videos, so that doesn't help.

It's an outdated law that seriously needs looking at

  • yeah i agree, its a passionate bit of the song where he's singing 'brother of mine don't run with those fuckers' it's not like he's just throwing the word about, it makes the song more powerful

  • That's what i love about elbow

When he says fuckers its for the emotion of the song, not cause he had a couple of syllables to fill and felt like putting it in

  • I am new to Elbow and I am quickly becoming a fan! Love his voice and the deep lyrics. : )

  • i cant say how good this is
