Blasted this on my way to my first set of university level classes today. The bass on this makes it IMPOSSIBLE to not strut. This is THE BEST song to walk to, no lie.
Does anyone know all the songs in this set? As on different channels I have seen different recordings that all look as though they are from the same place
I ve heard and seen him at this time in germany and it blows my mind ! Zitat FZ(199.) : ich übe jetzt schon so lang, langsam wird es besser, oder so..
@greenmedicineman Dude shut up this song rocks you ass, ha ha , I'm talking to myself. Frank is the Man....never gets old...the 1 and only ...how much more can I say except if you don't know you probably never will....this shit is to complex for most common sheeple......gotta stop by every now and then to hear this most amazing improvisation possibly ever. Peace and happiness to all you barking pumpkins out there....!
Fantastic guitar playing indeed. Lesser guitarists will just reach straight for those high notes immediately - Frank loved to stomp around those low frets as if to say f**k you, I like it down here. Zappa's guitar playing was in my opinion at its absolute best in the early 70's. There are some incredible solos on Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation.
Rediculously amzing, yeah the description is pretty accurate alright. I might not know too much Zappa but goddamn stuff like this is awesome, might start trying to get into him, any albums anyone would recommend.
once we get older and stop making sense, stop making sense making sense. i got a girlfriend that's better than that and nothing is better than this, is it?
I went to high school in a pretty small town. In the 80s, all the "cool" kids were into Ratt and Bob Jovi. They had probably never heard a Zappa record. Anyways, there was a lower income, mentally disabled kid in school. Always wore dated hand-me-downs and was ridiculed. One day, he wore a Zappa T-shirt and all the "cool" morons laughed. The irony is that Zappa could rock harder than any of the cheeseballs those idiots listned to!!!
Thank you for posting this. I have been an FZ fan for 30+ years and always considered the guitar solos the frosting on the cake. I notice a lot of comments on his playing. I recommend his "Guitar" and "Shut up and play your guitar" albums to those who like the sweet stuff. The Muffin Man lives.
i know many will say zappa's best bands were in the 80's, but this is definitely a hard one to beat. Ruth on mallets, plus george duke is simply amazing on keys while adding a nice funky vibe to the band, and jean luc ponte is well...
Some need transcendental meditation to reach a state of peace of mind. Me, I just need any piece of good Zappa music, and I'm flying in mid-air. Zappa lives on forever !!
I've heard all this music for so many years, and now, with the you tube revolution, it's all there to see. Where were all these videos before ? How is it possible that nobody had the idea of publishing them ? did thet really think there wasn't an audience for the se videos ? Certainly beats me !
you're obviously another folly ridden fool who is too stupid to appreciate Frank and everything he has done for contemporary music....."ignorance has a certain charm, stupidity doesn't" FZ
Bull shit. In fact, Zappa is far from a TECHNICAL master of the guitar, but he is still a master nonetheless. He's no redundant shredder, like Malmsteen, but at the same time, I doubt many shredders could play something as rhythmically diverse and complex as five-five-FIVE, or groove as well as Get A Little.
for me it's that sharp-4th interval between the minor 3rd and the major sixth. big ugly leap. like in "If only she would'a" that first note is a stretch up to the 6th, while the bg is Im-IV. nasty.
this man has covered more musical textures in the air and pushed the limits of the given sonic space more than anyone ever has. I'll put money on that. it says alot about the mainstream music industry to see such a legacy so often overlooked.good thing is that this eliminates the kind of disposability that comes with radio garbage. not only will the music stand the test of time, but it was so ahead even then that it will show us possibilities as time passes, while idiots forget emo,rap or metal!
As much as Frank has always had vibrant and talented keyboard players I'll always have a special place in my heart for George Duke. George just dug the hell out of playing, up there all smiling and groovin' and shit. George's smile is like a baby's smile, you can't help but smile back.
There's something very wrong with the aspect ratio on this - looks like a 4x3 picture that's been pillarboxed into 16x9 and then squashed back to 4x3. Good to hear this early version of Montana though. All together now... "I'm plucking the ol' dental floss, that's growing on the prairie..." 8-)
That was a helluva band! A well oiled funky machine. My first introduction to Zappa was ONE SIZE FITS ALL, I remember being intriged by Inca Roads... thinking WTF? Pyjama People was my personal epiphany, the dude was a badass guitar player that wah wah stuff he does on that song just kills. You have to past the surface manifestations with Frank to appreciate his genius. To paraphrase Steely Dan, Frank was major dude. :-)
how could you listed to his solo and just not move !!! you can't hear it and stay still !!! every time I hear it my head goes loose and a smile covers my face !!! the you guitar lord almighty Zappa :) RIP
He dove in with both feet, and never let up. What a magical moment. At 4:50 is where my jaw hit the table top. I listened to Phish because Trey really WANTED to play like this and he got close, but when Zappa let it loose, he can't be touched.
Too bad he didn't have singers for the post-guitar solo "I'm pluckin' the ol' dental floss/That's growin' on the prairie/Pluckin' the floss/I've plucked all day and all night and all afternoon ... Even though he's a bit dinky to be slappin' a big saddle or blanket on anyway ..."
I think it's "he's a bit dinky to slap a big saddle or blanket on anyway", at least the other one doesn't fit to the melody - there is two syllables too many. ;)
Just found this video by chance. I realized I was there, age 18! Long time ago. Nice memories. I remember they did not play as loud as many other bands at that time. Good thing I thought.
Maybe we should mention the very rare line-up of Napoleon-Murphy Brock, Bruce and Tom Fowler, Ian and Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Ralph Humphrey and Chester Thompson! Very Rare.
it's not Chester Thompson. he's black...this guy isn't black...unless I'm mistaken, he is a drummer by the name of Ralph Humphrey. He played on the Over-Nite Sensation album and played with George Duke, the fowlers, and pretty much every other member of that lineup.
No sh1t ?? is there any excellent musician Frank didnt rope into working with him ? I love Jean Luc's stuff and Im sure he learned a lot from the master in these early days. Love ya Frank.... please come back!
FZ solos are masterful and free with less confines then the poppy garbage we are used to .kinda like where jazz &rock meet that fusion is his gtr legacy, and hey hes human no robot!
more exceptional entertainment...this is what free music looked like, preserved for all posterity. This

a great solo by Frank. If you watch the rest of the gig you will see some great Jean Luc Ponty as well,he was a fiddler, but not the wrong kind of fiddler at least i hope not. love F.Zs trousers,he had style hahahahahaha
He had some kind of strange phenomenon thing with audiences in Sweden, then again anywhere he'd play he would have had a profound effect on at least some of the audience members. This is great stuff.
Damn, I've seen alot of Zappa videos but that's one of the best performances they ever gave. Frank was certainly in good form that day. One of the best solo's I've heard him play. That was a very short lived line-up too.
I have to agree with you. This guitar solo is just excellent. Swedish television did a program on Zappa a couple of years ago, in connection with the 10th "anniversary" of Zappa´s death. It was a nice program, but I was furious that they cut this tune as the solo was just starting...
Blasted this on my way to my first set of university level classes today. The bass on this makes it IMPOSSIBLE to not strut. This is THE BEST song to walk to, no lie.

Damn, I've seen alot of Zappa videos but that's one of the best performances they ever gave. Frank was certainly in good form that day. One of the best solo's I've heard him play. That was a very short lived line-up too.

Must have been pretty cold there in Sweden with those rollnecks and suits, and Ruth with clothes on for a change!

I have to agree with you. This guitar solo is just excellent. Swedish television did a program on Zappa a couple of years ago, in connection with the 10th "anniversary" of Zappa´s death. It was a nice program, but I was furious that they cut this tune as the solo was just starting...
