LOVE SUTTON FOSTER! Fabulous actress and singer. But, personally I like Lea Salonga's voice and the way she sings it better. Sutton Foster makes it out so mopey and whiney.
@DramaGirI I love Lea Salonga and Sutton, but I don't quite see how Sutton is making it mopey or whiney...I thought she sang it very well, much better than many I've seen.
When Marius is running around the stage at first... I thought that was hilarious, it's.. I don't know, kinda weird anyway. I don't think he should've done that.
After that I love how they play the scene though. How Marius tries to pay her and hugs her and Éponine all "offended" (lacking a better word)... I love it. <33
Sutton owns everything she does!! she is amazing in this role, i saw the revival in 2007 and i got the understudy Marissa McGowan and she rules too! i think there are clips of her on her, check her out!! she was way better than the real girl playing the role
Thank you soooooo much for posting this (and Sutton, if you're reading this, please don't hate us; we only watch because we love you and hope someone will revive this one day and cast you in the role again). I had the pleasure of seeing Sutton and Tim playing these roles in Cincinnati, long before Sutton Foster was . . . SUTTON FOSTER!!!!!!!! I always knew she'd become a star one day, and hope Tim will, too.
I think I it's just awkward and not quite right that a man would switch from first, ignoring someone, then kneeling at her feet, then paying her, and then conclude with hugging her. I can understand that a character changes tactics in order to achieve their objective, but this is too much and too disconnected. There's no flow between each beat. It's less of a desperate man and more of a schizophrenic. It's okay to be still on stage, no matter how much people always want to avoid it.

i think it makes sense in context of what is happening... i mean, he ignores her until he realizes that he can use her to help him. so then he offers to pay her. i dunno, it makes sense to me. sad for 'ponine, though
i agree, i like the staging of this number. i can understand how tim would seem schizophrenic, and i do think he should have calmed down a bit, but it makes sense to me. plus, when you think about it, most people who watch the show are not actors, they just come for a good time. so i guess that was tim's way of getting marius' point across for the, ahem, stage-disabled.
I love how he just sticks the coin in her face and they are great together! that hug was aweomse!! its soooo sad that when she was going to hug him back he pulls out!
Her voice is so comforting to listen to. I could listen to her all day.
