Excellent! Thumbs up for one of my favorite DM songs. Yes, Martin did write the music but I'm sure the arrangement and production were mostly Alan Wilder. He recieved little credit for crafting the DM "sound" and after his departure, their sound changed drastically. This change caused me to lose interest in DM but I never "connected" the dots to Alan Wilder until years later. More fool me!

i used to spend hours, listening by ear to recreate DM on a keyboard which was in the shape of a guitar... it had a portamento switch on the fret board.

I asked for a Roland W30 for xmas, but got a Commodore 64 instead.

The lead sound you're talking about is a guitar. Open G string with the fretted b-string alternating between 10 and 8. Run that through some crunchy distortion with either a good phaser or use a wah pedal to open it up. Get a sample of that and yer done.
