This was definitely one of THE best laptops of its time. Mine still runs games relatively well, although without proper ventilation, it will get very hot. I would still be using it today if the screen hadn't short circuited, rendering the display useless, and if I bought a new battery. If I could get that for free, I wouldn't be using this Dell XPS 17. I do wish I bought the HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition laptop instead of the dell also.
i have this laptop and i have a problem with it - basically when playing dvds now, a notable vibration can be felt. i never noticed this before. i've tried changing dvds, even took the drive out (doesnt seem sturdy), am considering ordering a replacement part but its expensive, ordered anti-vibration feet but that didnt work, disabled/enabled the drive, everything. its really annoying now. anyone got any tips? reply to my comment, cheers
The ONLY bad thing about this laptop is its keypad design, MAKE SURE you don't use the keys constantly at hot temperatures (55-70) or else the keys will start to turn black, I have my left shift and letter A keys almost half black now and it sucks because I gotta change the whole keyboard to change them :(!. Another problem is that it gets dirty all the time, and dust is a pain to get rid of from all its edges, especially the keyboard edge. Overall 9/10, TAKE REAL CARE for its body and ENJOY!!

same here, I got it for Euro 1,100 from laptops direct. It was a bloody bargain back in October 08 because the English Pound was weak so I had an advantage paying with Euros hehe :P!

that why i had enough using old laptop with xp, i want to get new feel on vista and maybe windows 7 i can upgrade which is coming out next week. ye you just have to look after and take care with your laptop does get dirty easily, once you finish with laptop just get cover to cover it.
That's what I usually do, but when you are using it, your hands will leave some dirt and "oil" or sweat on the internal frame because its glossy. When I got it, I always used the sock that came with it to cover it, but once you are at university carrying it all around with you, its a pain to keep covering all the time, and that's when problems started also with my keys wearing off.
ye i will get windows 7 upgrade free first i need to wait 4 laptop wich as got serial keys i need to buy direct hp online, i just have to for shipping not software :P. you may have to buy upgrade cd for it if you u do first save all backups like data and pc drivers shift it to d drive and once u get the cd just re format it on c drive :P i hope windows 7 is better. tc
man, this laptop is great, im getting it soon but the only problem with this laptoo are the touch controls, cuz they are glitchy and that the wireless button keeps turninh on and off, hp should really fix that
im ordering mine n a couple of wks.. read thru sum reviews on the website after you go through the configuration part by yourself.. so you can see any tips that they have to offer and compare to your own wants and taste.. after reading them im going with the 320 GB hard drive instead of the 500. the 500 GB was an extra $50.. right.. but you can buy an external hard drive of 1 TB for like $100 now! so yea.. i might as well save my money.. most every1 switched either up to or down to the 320!! :D
It is pretty good i have one and i am using it right now but the problem with it is that it freezes up every now and then but overall its a pretty good pc.

On my PS3 when Im changing from my HD tv to my analog it gives me the option of either 16:9 or 4:3. I don't know what it could be, im guessing internally with the computer.
just change the resolution settings for more widescreen like settings it might not work because the monitor might stretch the changed resolution so it is still 4:3 it might work though give it a try
It's like a slighty bigger version of my laptop, only with HD. I looked at it, for the price a bit much, the specs are nice, but my HP DV5T has equivilent specs and only cost me $800. My visions kind of bad so I don't really care for HD.
From what I have seen the battery life with a 6 cell is only about an hour and a half... should I go with the 12? I just don't like how big the 12 cell is on the laptop.

I have this computer and it came with the remote like in this video. But it didn't come in the slot in the computer. Something else did.... Something that's the same shape of the remote but it doesn't look like it's used for anything. I tried to fit the remote in the slot.... BAD MISTAKE. It almost got stuck! What am I missing here?
the thing that comes in the remote slot is just a demo strip, you can throw it away it has no value. As for the remote, insert the remote all the way in till you hear a click, its usually locked in place by a push mechanism so dont worry, it wont be stuck

This laptop is Great! i dual-boot Vista and Windows 7 Beta (build 7000) both 64-bit super fast! And get 25-35 fps on Crysis very high settings with DX10!
I got the HDX16 and its amazing. the only thing that buggs me is the volume touch control, it sometimes get stuck or unaccurate. But on the whole I suggest this laptop to everyone. I played Assassin's Creed at high setting but with AA off and I see about 30fps. WoW at full graphics at 30-25 fps at Dalaran, COD4 everything full, AA x2 I see 60-30 fps. Sound Quality is amazing and The screen Detail is exellant. I might upgreat the GPU to a 9800gt in the future, but so far so good.

Na the HDX16 and HDX18 are the new babies of HP, DV7 has less resolution then the HDX16 and HDX18, the HDX 18 comes also with 500GB HDD, but the HDX16 comes only with 320Gb HDD since there is not enough space to place a 500Gb HDD. The sound is better on the HDX series and better battery life. The HDX hardware is compatable with Vista 64Bit where as DV7 supports 32bit. Both have DDR 3 GPU and the HDX come with a standard min 2.42Ghz processor, DV7 has a standard min of 2Ghz such as T5800.
the only thing dat i dont like about dis computer is dat it has the sd-ms card thing int the front, and the microphone/speaker button is to the side, on the 18.4 inch laptop

Something that's the same shape of the remote but it doesn't look like it's used for anything. I tried to fit the remote in the slot.... BAD MISTAKE. It almost got stuck! What am I missing here?

the thing that comes in the remote slot is just a demo strip, you can throw it away it has no value. As for the remote, insert the remote all the way in till you hear a click, its usually locked in place by a push mechanism so dont worry, it wont be stuck

I got the HDX16 and its amazing. the only thing that buggs me is the volume touch control, it sometimes get stuck or unaccurate. But on the whole I suggest this laptop to everyone. I played Assassin's Creed at high setting but with AA off and I see about 30fps. WoW at full graphics at 30-25 fps at Dalaran, COD4 everything full, AA x2 I see 60-30 fps. Sound Quality is amazing and The screen Detail is exellant. I might upgreat the GPU to a 9800gt in the future, but so far so good.

Na the HDX16 and HDX18 are the new babies of HP, DV7 has less resolution then the HDX16 and HDX18, the HDX 18 comes also with 500GB HDD, but the HDX16 comes only with 320Gb HDD since there is not enough space to place a 500Gb HDD. The sound is better on the HDX series and better battery life. The HDX hardware is compatable with Vista 64Bit where as DV7 supports 32bit. Both have DDR 3 GPU and the HDX come with a standard min 2.42Ghz processor, DV7 has a standard min of 2Ghz such as T5800.
