I had to leave rugby for a whole year after a horrible injury. my leg twisted in the wrong direction. but I'm back playing for my uni. rugby is more tough. really u have to play to know.... try competing in the ruck for possession..u get punched, fricken stomped on with iron studs. I doubt any of you have played both lol. I played both football and rugby and football is by FAR a more painful game. Pads protect against major injuries, but worsen small injuries like broken fingers, bruising, ect. Tackling in rugby feels...soft, for lack of a better word. Hitting a body with no pads on is relatively painless, and you never hurt your fingers because of pads. They also hit much softer, its more of a wrap at the waist then a huge collision
I've played both sports and rugby is considerbly harder. As a lineman in the NFL you don't have to be in shape (fitness wise) and the bigger the better. In rugby it is rare to see anyone over 260lbs. It is interesting to note that a sport where you have to be healthy for fitness should be considered a better sport then one where you are encouraged to be unbelievably huge.
We see hits like that multiple times in every game. Thats nothing. And you stupid brits don't realize the strategy and mental skill it takes to play football. The reason why we stop the play is because we need to call the next play and strategize. Don't bag on football until you really understand what its about. Us having pads enables us to be able to hit harder, faster, and more powerful simply because we dont have to worry as much about our body taking the beating. If you have played american football before you would understand that the hits we make and the blocks we have to take on would literally kill us without pads. In the past 3 weeks of my highschool football season 4 kids have had major concussions. They got these with the helmets on I can't imagine what would happen without the helmets.

There is a reason why there are so many injuries and concussions in the NFL, and why player safety has become a massive issue recently despite the padding - and your a fool if you think it's because the players are soft/wimps etc.

@DJSolidify In American Football you tackle from a low base, driving your shoulder on a plane running through or just underneath the bottom of the rib cage up out of the shoulder blade - to stop the ball carriers momentum dead and drive him backwards. Try that on a rugby field without padding and see what happens. You'd be thrown off for dangerous play and the guys getting blasted in the ribs wouldn't last long either.

Now, that's the biggest contract there but, it clearly shows ruggers make plenty of money. More importantly, they can play longer then NFLers (Not For Long) and therefore, make more money in the long run. And, there are far less concussions and neck injuries in rugby.

the tackler in rugby is the one delivering the hits(unless the ball carrier lays one on the tackler), but in AF, the tackler is often blind sided. The tackler has to make the play while the ball carrier team mates are trying to kill him.
It cost a lot more to insure a Football player than a Rugby player, because the risk is far greater of severe injury in football than in Rugby. But that's not the point. Football has 1,000 layers of tatics, it's all set plays. Blocking, blind side hits and gang tackles are all rougher than the contact seen in Rugby. Football is an elite game. Most backs have to be able to run 100m in sub 10.5 and they weigh about 100kgs - and they're just the little guys on the field. They look smaller because of the lack of pads compared to a NFL player.

Pads protect against major injuries, but worsen small injuries like broken fingers, bruising, ect. Tackling in rugby feels...soft, for lack of a better word. Hitting a body with no pads on is relatively painless, and you never hurt your fingers because of pads. They also hit much softer, its more of a wrap at the waist then a huge collision

I've played both sports and rugby is considerbly harder. As a lineman in the NFL you don't have to be in shape (fitness wise) and the bigger the better. In rugby it is rare to see anyone over 260lbs. It is interesting to note that a sport where you have to be healthy for fitness should be considered a better sport then one where you are encouraged to be unbelievably huge.

Us having pads enables us to be able to hit harder, faster, and more powerful simply because we dont have to worry as much about our body taking the beating. If you have played american football before you would understand that the hits we make and the blocks we have to take on would literally kill us without pads. In the past 3 weeks of my highschool football season 4 kids have had major concussions. They got these with the helmets on I can't imagine what would happen without the helmets.

Try that on a rugby field without padding and see what happens. You'd be thrown off for dangerous play and the guys getting blasted in the ribs wouldn't last long either.

Now, that's the biggest contract there but, it clearly shows ruggers make plenty of money. Football has 1,000 layers of tatics, it's all set plays. Blocking, blind side hits and gang tackles are all rougher than the contact seen in Rugby. Football is an elite game. my view on the whole rugby v football agruement is that while science has proven the G forces and force in a football tackle is on average higher, that does not mean that they hurt more. the pads abosrb those G forces whereas my shoulder bone and torso take my tacklers force. A good portion of your body is still exposed, and by no means does padding mean you dont feel hits. You feel them, they're coushioned, but they are much harder than rugby hits. They're completely different sports. get that through your thick head

@promisquis1 They're completely different sports, and my bad i definately interpreted it. Im not saying rugby aint tough, just NFL is pretty damn tough as well. Go into the trenches of a football game and tell me that isnt grueling. They arent comparable, besides physicality. Football is a huge tactical game. Look up Reggie Bush hit. That doesnt happen in rugby. Zurrixia is right. Have you played american football at atleast high school level?

@DoNzIIBLiTzZ I agree, however American Football is more a cultural outing than a sport. I try to watch American football but being Australian its so difficult as it just stops and starts every 15-20 seconds. A good example of why its more cultural thing than a sport is look at the Super Bowl, more ads and a massive half time show rather than the actual game itself. Then the rugby/ football world cup its all about the game and the MANY countries that play it.

@FurlogTheGiant rugby has most definitely progressed since it's humble beginnings, just like american football: better equipment, pitch modifications, larger stadiums, rule changes etc.
i love american football, i understand the rules and try and watch it, but i do get bored quite quickly. i prefer rugby to play and watch because for me it just flows better.

You'll see then what rugby hits can really do. Besides the hits may not be as big as in football because in football they have all that padding to wear.

NFL players are bigger, faster, and stronger, average NFL player is 6-4 and about 245lbs and can run a 4.4 40yd NFL players are the definition of a true athlete combining size, strength, and speed. rugby only may have better endurance... only may because of the wide receivers in the NFL probably could keep up. And about the olympics, USA had more medals, but Japan had more gold. Football isnt even a sport, very little skill involved (Compared To Other Sports)

It's not actually that British even though it originated. The top 3 teams in the world are New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. England and stuff aren't even near the top 5. NFL could be a cool sport, just lose the make up, tone down the pads and play for more then 30 seconds at a time. Maybe then the rest of the world would give a shit about it.

Most backs have to be able to run 100m in sub 10.5 and they weigh about 100kgs - and they're just the little guys on the field. They look smaller because of the lack of pads compared to a NFL player.

American footballers don't use their heads as weapons. As a matter of fact it is illegal to lead with your helmet. Before the pads were introduced there was a lot more deaths in American football. Saying that I'm not slagging Rugby, I love the sport and have played both. Excellent video.
