I love this argument. Somehow big business who employs most of the people in the world is always "screwing" someone. Yet somehow the government will solve all of our problems. Name one thing that the government has managed better than the private sector? Postal Service? No FedEx, UPS, et al are far superior. Airlines? Despite current issues, far more people have affordable access to the skies now than before. Social Security? Last I checked independent investors have done far better in saving.

It is ridiculous that oil companies] are making record profits and getting tax breaks. In virtually any other industry, companies must re-invest a portion of their profits into research and development in order to meet the future demands of the market. Oil companies need to reinvest in real sustainable energy solutions and be cut off from the government trough.

tainoaz, I agree that we shoud use less (decrease demand) but we also need to increase the supply. That will get the price down.

Remember, Japan also decreased usage by making a gallon of gas cost $7 to $9 dollars. I assure you if we had the same price as they do, we would decrease usage.

Here we go again, just blame Bush. You know that the Democratic congress got elected by saying they would bring troops home and they would decrease gas prices. How are we doing with that?

A quick economics lesson.

Gas prices should be $5.25 if it reflected the actual increase in the price of oil.

In order to get gas prices down, you need to increase supply or decrease demand.

We have increased the efficiency of our car engines by 40% since the 1980's. What have we done, purchased bigger cars and SUVs.

We have not built a nuclear power plant since the 70's. Decrease demand.

We have not built a refinery since the 70's.

We do not allow drilling on our coasts and large parts of Alaska.

Allow oil companies to drill in Alaska for 20 years. But tell them that they must put aside $5 per barrel for development of alternative energy.
