@arjoj10 First of all, airliners don't use "mph." We use knots. Secondly, I didn't say it was impossible to fly under 300mph. I asked if you knew how hard it was to keep an airliner under "300mph." If you pull an airliner to idle throttle and shove the nose over, you will blast through 300mph (260kts) pretty quickly. Most transport aircraft fly the final approach at around 140kts and land at less than 130kts. The max airspeed on the airliner I fly, for landing, is 147kts or ~160mph. ;)

@1REDDAWN13 The 747 uses knots as well. Knots are the "standard" measurement for aircraft speed. All Vspeeds and limitations will be in knots. We fly at a "mach speed" at high altitude and use indicated speeds (in knots) at lower altitudes. Minimum speed is always an IAS. Max speed is either knots at low alt or mach at high altitudes. For instance in a climb, we'll see say 300kts until we reach a given mach number, say .80, then we use .80 for the rest of the climb and cruise.

@1REDDAWN13 Flaps are used to be able to slow down. The jet I fly, we use flaps at speeds less than 200kts. If you pull it to idle and push the nose over, you can go very fast, very quick. It is hard to keep a jet at idle, in a decent under 250kts.

The crash photos most of us see are of aircraft that crashed at relatively low speeds for jets, and thus leave bits and pieces around.

One thing is always common in all of them, seats, body parts, titanium engine parts, insulation from the fuselage, tail sections, wing sections. Aircraft DON'T just dissintigrate. I know, I've seen the wreckage of an f-14 that crashed doing the speed of sound and killed both pilots. It was there and so should have been flight 93.

I have, however, always doubted the "Let's Roll!" story on the basis that, I don't think it was neccesary to crash the plane, a group of determined adult males shold be able to gain control of an aircraft, its not like a car where you grab the wheel and crash into a tree to escape a carjacker, i don't see why they couldn't have maintained control of the aircraft, even if the pilots were dead. @arjoj10 First of all, airliners don't use "mph." We use knots. Secondly, I didn't say it was impossible to fly under 300mph. I asked if you knew how hard it was to keep an airliner under "300mph." If you pull an airliner to idle throttle and shove the nose over, you will blast through 300mph (260kts) pretty quickly. Most transport aircraft fly the final approach at around 140kts and land at less than 130kts. The max airspeed on the airliner I fly, for landing, is 147kts or ~160mph. ;)

@1REDDAWN13 The 747 uses knots as well. Knots are the "standard" measurement for aircraft speed. All Vspeeds and limitations will be in knots. We fly at a "mach speed" at high altitude and use indicated speeds (in knots) at lower altitudes. Minimum speed is always an IAS. Max speed is either knots at low alt or mach at high altitudes. For instance in a climb, we'll see say 300kts until we reach a given mach number, say .80, then we use .80 for the rest of the climb and cruise.

@1REDDAWN13 Flaps are used to be able to slow down. The jet I fly, we use flaps at speeds less than 200kts. If you pull it to idle and push the nose over, you can go very fast, very quick. It is hard to keep a jet at idle, in a decent under 250kts.
I don't believe it was shot down, the crash site looks very much like a high speed plane crash and is mostly accepted as that in the pilot community. High speed does weird things.

There were something like 15 of those who NOTHING was found. The LARGEST body parts they found of those they were able to ID were feet, still inside shoes. I'm an aircraft mechanic of over 20 years of experience. I have seen plane crash sites on the side of mountains, in swamps, fields, in forests, and in the ocean. One thing is always common in all of them, seats, body parts, titanium engine parts, insulation from the fuselage, tail sections, wing sections. Aircraft DON'T just dissintigrate. I know, I've seen the wreckage of an f-14 that crashed doing the speed of sound and killed both pilots. It was there and so should have been flight 93.
