Was in the audience with my girlfriend when this was recorded 1968/69 ,still have the L.P.. in perfect condition.Brings back happy memories,I asked her to marry me on the way home, we have now been wed for 42 years.Thank you for posting this.
The Corries?!? Not a chance, sorry. It may be a Scottish song but no Scot (or anyone for that matter) will ever sing this song like Luke. Makes the hairs stand on the back of my neck.... every time.
I still prefer the COrries version of Peggy Gordon, to Luke Kelly's version and although Luke does his best he is no match for the Corries version of this song.
luke sounded the same live as from a recording studio where they can make singers sound better than they really are, but luke never needed help from that department.
Luke Kelly's wailing voice on Peggy Gordon gives me the shivers. I love this song, and I just keep on finding wonderful interpretatons like this one and newfiefiddler's.
That's it...i've heard enough...Luke Kelly is god of Irish Music.
I love how the best music can make a person cry, try listening to any version of con ti partiro and not feeling something! Same feeling different tune here.

The song they played before this one was
McAlpine's Fusiliers, sung by Ronnie. The album Live at the Royal Albert Hal is still available on e-Bay. Both on LP and CD. Have a look!
Kind regards from Holland.

Nah, it was a reel played by Barney, When he finished, and the crowds applause had died down a little he turned to Luke and said "follow that".

Wow! - does that not make your hair stand on end? Sung the way the song is meant to be sung - so much passion and feeling in that voice of Luke's.
Love it!
