  • this is for free you dont need to pay any money for it i swear and it is the best engine ive ever used apart from 3ds max

  • also at 4:27 the stained glass material has a lighting function ...how is this done? hints n tips would be paramount right now :)

  • at 2:57 how is the mesh emitting its own light source, ive been searching for a few days now on a way to achieve that effect, and ideas?

  • @RennFarnell meshes do not set off light this is created with a simple lighting map it is just glowing but not makeing a large light around to make a light glow you need to add a game light you can do this by holding down l then clicking on the mesh then enter game mode and youl see the light is setting off a large glow around you can find light static meshes

    in the continent browser

  • @kingchris649 ive worked in the unreal engine for 2 years now i know how to place a light my question was aimed more towards the glow surrounding the mesh, as a static mesh light cannot be shaped to follow the contours of a mesh, to my knowledge, which is how i thought this was done, clicking L and placing a standard light will not give the same effect as seen at 2:57 in the video

  • yawns..

  • Excellent framerates huh? IF and ONLY IF you have a nvidia geforce 6-8000 or a card of similar quality.

  • RAD

  • @bipedaphobic I put in the description a link to a better quality video a while ago. Also this video was uploaded in 2007 and at that time there was no other way to see this demo. This tapped version was the best quality. :)

  • This is really good!

  • This is Unreal!

  • @jarnobot No, THIS IS SPARTA!

  • this is Unreal Engine 2...

  • For commercial use, this game engine is $99 (US Dollars) and then a 25% royalty after you make $50,000 with it.

  • What is the cost for a commercial licence?

  • @Kousaburo Like... $3000 I think?

  • @FanOfKOTOKO You think wrong. The liscensing cost for UE2 was $1.7 million. I hear UE3 is a lot more but for some reason it's not public knowledge.

  • @Kousaburo I mean per person per year...

Seems like it's $99 for the royalty license and 25% royalty, with different costs depending on what you'll be using it for according to the site.

  • does it actually use phong shading or just normal mapping? Because phong shading interpolates normals across rasterized polygons while normal mapping is simply a color value on a screen coordinate giving you the normals...

  • cough cough

  • incredible BRAVO 4 EPIC GAMES ;)

  • this is the best free game maker

  • This is how crysis should have been made, such high tech graphics with such good techniques that it requires less hardware

  • Its free, but only for private use- every one who wants to earn money with it has to pay to Epic...

  • Wheres the LINUX version!?!?

  • @osmodivs LOL LINUX

  • Excellent.

  • Have a cough drop

  • This engine is so flexible! There are SOOOO many games using the Unreal Engine 3.

  • HAHAHAHAHAH nice coughing!!!! :)

  • Prety good stuff

  • Dragonfly (a Korean Company) bought the licences to UE3 and will they are working on games using this now, It's going to be... Fucking sweet. Fucking physics are fucking sweet and the game they are making (Special Forces 2) When you play it, you will really shit bricks.

  • @RedvsBlueGoD Dragonfly didn't buy the fucking licenses. Cliff Blenzinski owns them, the creator of the the Unreal game!!!

  • @spookymcfuzzy Game developers buy licenses to the engine which allows them to use the engine, otherwise, Epic could sue the game company that uses the engine without a license.

  • That was amazing. Fuck the haters. UE is awesome!

  • good old burmak

  • which engine does gears of war 2 use?

  • can anyone help? whenever i try opening the udk installment folder, it says "The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll."

  • i think cryengine 2 is UBER inefficient compared to unreal engine 3

  • Cryengine is nice but it seems too basic thats just my opinion

  • great engine....but for me cryengine is better....less optimized, but graphics are better in cryengine

  • @4tun3dBACK I think you mean cryengine 2, and i think that the unreal 3 engine has better textures, but the cryengine 2 has better vegitation and atmospheric effects, and volumetric clouds which are very sexy :)

  • I'm sure developers will be using this engine for quite a while before the next big thing is made. And especially considering that with new graphics cards, you can play good looking games with this engine and not have terrible frame rates!

  • is that garrus talking?

  • from when u cane get that demo ?

  • How rude.

  • @jpomail

Dude, this is for pros and over enthusiasts, some light programing in games is nothing...

  • How difficult is it to build games in this, I have used game maker and done some very light programing.

  • It's best to have a team. The process of high poly modeling, depending on how detailed it is, take quite a long time to model. For fun and stuff, it wouldn't take much knowledge, but if you want to get serious with it, It is quite time consuming. Difficulty ends once you know what you are doing. Get yourself a few really good modelers and texture artists and you can have yourself a game quite quickly. Your programmer might need to script in features you want, but most of it is there already.

  • @choasdragon908

true but GOW team only had about ten people

  • are serious ten people ha

  • idiot

  • @tom3167 i said about ten people and there almost was so dude suck a dick

  • @jpomail

all i have to say is now you can download it free and when using it LOL! watch out its kinda tough but its great to use

  • @jpomail It's just as hard as any game engine. To make anything other hten an unreal tourney mod youll need to know it all. (Including UnrealScript)

  • I have yet to see any mod designers or level editors to look as good as this, they must be running it on a very high end machine.

  • They use tricks to make u think it needs a high end machine, for example they first create a high resolution mesh then they copy the detail from that mesh to the low game model by using normal maps, they use specular maps and ambient occlusion for a more realistic look and of course the color map.

  • @TheIcemanModdeler

well unreal engine characters run about usually atleast 12,000 or 8,000 atleast and you do need a machine that is good it even takes some cpu to read small amounts of texture for instance a weak computer running 2048X2048 texture may experience some lag and also all the models count up not only that but unreal engine uses some pretty emersive

type shadowing filter that also need some pretty good comp power and dont forget all texture channels add up to that of a few kb to mb

  • have you not seen cryengine? unreal looks amazing but cryengine makes unreal go cry to it's mommy.

  • @BigdogWitBigdog

yeah but it doesnt looks as fun to mess around with but i must admit it is kind of stupid how people negative you when your right or you try to help ive seen cry engine i know the graphics are awsome and stuff but killzone 2 looks better even though cry engine is awsome is the new cry engine out? cryengine 2?

  • Ah yes, I was thinking the same thing one year ago. But did you actually use cryengine2? I did and it is glitchy as hell. Waiting for cryengine 3 now.

  • @sereda008 the cryengine 2 isn't buggy. crysis and SOME other cryengine games are a little glitchy but developers usually fix that before too long.

  • GET A BETTER PC IF YOU CAN'T RUN IT.

  • @sereda008

D: i cant afford it sniff

  • Downloading now.

    This beats Panda3D so much.

  • Now THIS Is An Engine!

  • And something i would love to see in another game: /watch?v=ds-9YrwYb6w&feature=related

    /watch?v=_2Spe4_-030&feature=related

    /watch?v=Nc5H13YbO68&feature=related

  • What the creature with the wings a deleted character in Gears of War?

  • If you think this engine is not good you need to see geras of war, unral tournament 3, army of two, Medal of Honor: Airborne , Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 and Batman Arkhm Asylum, thats not all many games today use this engine.

for you dont like this engine you need to hate this games

  • udk DOT COM

  • where to download ?

  • anyone knows how to set up the unreal engine i just dont understand the C++ code thing

  • pah, who's gonna use it commercially :P

  • dead engine huh??...lol...because gears of war 2 isnt up to this day a huge hit?? And then there's bio shock 2 coming out soon..this is a very good engine, not to mention free.

  • unreal engine 3 is free!? like, the engine to play around with? so I can download it and load user-made levels in it? and make my own? like the physics- or physX- levels you see? or just basic stuff?

  • its free but its not allowed to publish games :/

  • the UDK is now free. you can sell your game commercially, they just take like 30% of the earnings after your first 5000. which is not bad considering that the engine costs over a million bucks

  • the last time I heard it was 25%, don't quote me on that, but for some reason 25% seems to stick in my mind.

  • @ilvin12 it's not free to develop commerical games on...I believe it's about 3 million dollars to buy it for a one game license.

  • @Whistt It depends. If you want Unreal Engine 3 with the source code so that you can modify the base code. Then yes, it's expensive.

But to release a commercial game, you just need to pay 99$ + royalties.

  • @ilvin12 bioshock 2 doesnt use unreal engine 3 but a heavely modified unreal engine 2.5

  • @ilvin12 its not free?

  • @Zkrudriverz It is. Unless you want to release it commercially. Then you have to pay 99$. Big deal for a game engine. =P

  • Unreal 3 Engine is FREE whooooooohoo

  • dead technology .

    man you are realy noob

  • I may be a noob but at least I can tell when an engine is old and overused, unlike you asshole.

  • @johnnylightning258 lets see your computer run that shit

  • It does...too well.

    Cryengine 2 ftw.

  • In the unreal engine can you CUSTOMIZE the shadows, lighting, motion blur, SSAO, depth of field and more???? to suit your needs???

  • don't know about SSAO, but yes, you can customize everything in the UDK and unreal editor from View->World Properties

  • Visit Crymod website. They have taken crysis and made it there own: Play crysis on your wiimote, over the shoulder camera (looks like uncharted)

    My favorites custom weapons: /watch?v=LO-cajFsoDo

    /watch?v=JRUN5oMACUo&feature=related

    and: /watch?v=jaMBzoTKnWI

    /watch?v=8s9AL4PaQS8&feature=related

  • I beg to differ.

  • ..and required NO programming, what so ever...

  • My gosh. Source Engine is dead now, isn't it?

  • noooo nahn close baby hl2 ep 3 is released either l8 dis yr erly nxt i beleiv eit has new engine

  • Apperently Valve is still working on a new game that runs on the Source engine.

  • LOL, source engine i had to laugh.

  • Boring, now thats a dead engine Source engine is so dated Valve really needs to create another great game engine because although I Love HL2 to death Im sick and tired of playing its clones.

  • I agree its dated, although its still capable of a few things. I also think its overly complicated since you have to program everything in C for Source.

  • Concurred

  • well source has great physics and the best ai

  • Died quite a while ago. You should check your death ads. Your mom might be dead.

  • Polygons are old news

  • hahaha, that is just the best comment, you gotta be some kind of genious haha, did you know that the prosessor is older? i guess old ideas to you are useless

  • FUCK UP FAGGOTRY.

  • Good engine though there only one game using it right.. Gears of war 2.

Me, I would like to se Sony using the Killzone 2 engine with some games, maybe an uppgraded version will be in Resistance 3?

And when will Crysis 2 show?

Or more importantly a cry engine 3 game?

IFar cry 2 has pretty bad lighting, there is no blurred shadows and everything covered looses details, and all shodows no matter what time, where it is or whatever makes it they always has the same tone. lol.

  • Engine in Resistance is cool, but some things are way to poorly detailed, like some things in UT3, and like in ut3 some vegetations turns face at you all the time....freaky. :S

The new Ratchet and Clank game however, looks Über.

  • Idiot, many games use it. Including Mirror's Edge.

  • cry engine 3 and crysis 2 are both on the way allready

  • yes new games coming out still use this awesome engine. including big titles that im sure you will buy.

  • wow 200 million polygons?

  • try my turbofrog engine.

    just kidding great video.

  • 2 million polygons

  • so.. where can you buy it?

  • google UDK, its free..

  • I know

  • 4:27 locust disco

  • UNREAL!

  • nice to see how the creepers use to look.

  • thats what i call an ENGINE :))

  • FANTASTIC!!!!

  • Give me the link for thisssssssssss

  • The brumaks and grunts for example look close to the saem in Gears 1 and Gears 2. However, I don't think that the 360 can handle a lot of the other features that UNreal Engine 3 can offer like the light distortion affects. In Any case...this was a great engine to grace the current wave of consoles. Can't wait to see what Unreal Engine 4 will have to offer. Maybe E3 this year or next year...

  • OH.. MY... GOD.... 200 Fucking Million Polygons O.O

  • its 2 million for the high resolution mesh

  • Will this engine, if I wish to buy it allow me to make any type of game I want?

  • Yes, but it is very expensive. So if you don't have a big company or money man behind you to support it, you probably can't afford it.... unless you're rich yourself.

  • Lol, pirate (H), anyways, can't find a good compile of it. Lame :'( 250k is too much obvs lol

  • Until UE4 comes out, i don't think 3 will be available like 2 is right now. And the people who have UE3 have paid for it, and are usually big gaming companies. I highly doubt there's a copy floating around. I haven't seen one at all.

  • Yeah, there like ONE but its like stripped with no textures, and you need UT3 for all the stuff, and blah its impossible lol, its UE2 any good?>

  • can u link ue2?

  • I thought Ue3 was used for r6v2 (awful texture job though characters looked good though)

  • Ya it was used, but there have been significant improvements in its design. UE4 is still in development, so anything using UE3 is being "upgraded at will" while still holding to the base standards of the engine. I did some research, and read on the wiki that Gears of War 2 is using a modified version of UE3 (UE3.25/5) as they call it.

  • Yea thats what i read they use like more updated versions

  • Darn, millions of polygons.

  • Im happy im taking a class with the software in the summer! I know it will be hard though.

  • freaking AWESOME!!

  • gears of war 1 was a test for ut3 and gears of war 2 was the same engine as ut3 with it's finish form so gear was just a side thing from epic which got famous

  • also i know this comes with the game, i don't have the game..

  • can anyone provide this software?

no torrents only torrents for ut3 and gears.

    and i'm not doing that.

  • nvm they wear armor but im still pretty sure those arent them

  • lmao a locust drones just like hangin out there, thats so weird

  • did they make gears of war out of this and call it gears of war

  • Pretty bad FPS in the first bit!

  • Cuz it was runing on a Geforce 6800 wich was the the latest and greatest Graphics Card during the time this demo was shown

    :)

  • is this engine commercial or open source?

  • What do you think?

  • but how can you get unreal engine 3!

  • Lol at the old design for the wretches!

I bet that dragon creature will be in Gears 2.

  • but sadly its not, weird to reply to a comment thats that old. but yeah i dont think the dragon thing would really fit in anyways

  • That looks so damn cool how the light comes out of the manhole like that. This is really the next step in gaming as far as graphics go. The biggest breakthrough is probably the ambient occlusion, and the subsurface scattering on the wings(which would be good for stuff like leaves, grass, and cloth). They seem to have applied global illumination as you can on the floating blob of water(notice the light that refracts onto the pedestal). Cool shit.

  • WOW... Serious stuff

  • haha, the light looks funny on the locust. XD but if i waz down there n i saw that thing i wlda bn scared outa my pants n it wlda bn on n poppin... n i wlda done all the poppin! lmao

  • they are a fuk'n genius!!!!

  • they should have put the dragon like thing in gears of war

  • They dont look like wretches 2 me

  • That's too bad, because they are.

    They just aren't waring armor.

  • wretches dont wear armor....... at least i dont think. i like the brumak the best in there tho

  • Wretches wear armor in the final game, just not here.

  • i dont think there are any wretches here, plus ive never seen a wretche wearing armor

  • They're coming out of the manhole at the end. You have seen them wearing armor, for that's the only kind of wretch in the final game.

  • i still dont think those things look like wretches, i mean its really hard to say since their faces are always covered

  • It's the posture, anatomy, and body build I'm looking at...

There's a close up pick of a wretch on the main site, you can compare there.

  • ok then ill check it out i guess

  • the last creatures that came out from the sewers looked.....creepy

  • yeah but the brumak coulda kicked theyre asses

  • was that gears of war 2?

  • nope, it's not a game although they showed some gow characters...just a demo, most of it looked pretty similar to bioshock which also uses the unreal engine

  • it's nothing spectacular, nothing that hasn't been seen before...

  • This demo was uploaded a year ago.

    A lot has happent since.

Both UT3 and Crysis weren't even out when this video was made, but between the two engines i prefer Unreal3 which is, in my opinion, more mature and inovative. :)

  • UT rulezzzzzzzz

  • UT3 does not look as good as thias presentation

  • true, but gears of War does.

  • Thats right. I wish, game developers wouldnt do that and lower the graphics the closer they get to bring a game to the market. Sadly, but they are forced to. Take Crysis f/e. they didnt adjust the graphic to the most used graphic cards on the market and the result was a low number of sold crysis copies.

BTW. DOOM3 looked also better in the 1st presentaions :o)

  • Low number of sold copies because back then not everybody had a 8800 Ultra. Even now many dont have that power in their computer.

  • To Melcland: What's wrong with keeping all the features, but making them optional for those with less powerful hardware.

And yeah, I'd have slapped a sticky grenade on the coughing guy & told him it was a cough-drop! ;D

  • are they optional? cause i saw screens from people with high end computers and compared with screens from gameplay from that came out like a year b4 u3 was released. The textures were much nicer back then

  • Its a shame they have to lower the graphics near the release of a game but at least it means more people can run it on there hardware
