This is one of the most startlingly brilliant songs ever. The references are exquisite. Totally, totally superb. The inclusion of the Tallis in the middle of the song was a mistake. It would have been better without that. Never mind. 5 stars.
I added the Tallis bit in the middle myself (its not in the original song) so it's my fault! HMHB should should write more beautiful songs - they are obviously capable and they can still be funny (as shown here)
The first time I heard this I too thought it was a beautiful song. Admittedly, they are not the best singers or instrumentalists, but I think that somehow adds to the frail pulchritude of the song rather than detracting from it. You're right. They should do more beautiful songs.
Yes it is a bit awkward - interrupts the flow a bit. However given that 90% or more of Youtube visitors won't have a bogging notion who Thomas Tallis or John Dowland were it does at least inform.
