I have no shame in admitting that this nasty piece of work frightened me more as a child than Darth Vader did. I was so fucking terriffied that I could hardly bear to even look at him whenever he started smiling. The music didn't help. Even now, all grown up I feel unsettled by him and his demonic hordes.
@DerrickYih Let me tell you something: If Disney was going to have a hero, there would be no villain. So if you have a Disney Hero, you need a Disney Villain.
@DerrickYih: Why, for heaven's sake, why not? There's no harm in seing naked breasts :P. Not even children would care XD. I mean, there's hardly ANY blood even in Disney films nowadays. Yes, I understand it's for children, that's what Disney Studios focus on, but come on, I mean, there was blood in the Hungeback of Notredame(in the beginning, on the church starirs), Sleeping Beauty(Maleficen gets a sword in her chest), Beauty and the Beast(the Beast's wound when Gastone stabbed him with a knife)
@DerrickYih: , the Lion King and the Little Mermaid :). Though it was very little blood involved, there was indeed blood, and you don't see very much of that in the Disney films of today, probably bc of parents(-.-'). I like that Up had atleast some reasonable amounts of it at the start of the film when the old man bashed the younger man in the head XD. And naked breasts, well, it's not required to see that much of those in Disney films really, but it's nice to see that they had atleast one with
@DerrickYih: such elements ^^(ofc this film didn't really focus on the element ''naked breasts'', which is obvious, since it's focus bends over to dark and demonic atmosphere, which is really nice, since I love demons and darkness and all that ;D). God bless Walt Disney for this :D. Btw, cheers m8 and God bless you =).
@Sephiroth1556 Wait, Disney actually felt in necessary to put nipples on the harpies and have them fly RIGHT up to the camera to show them off, yet, this was intended for children.
It was bad in the 1940's, plus I'm pretty sure that the dancing infered worse things, and did you see the Harpie at 5:09, it picked up another guy and tossed him into a pit
@bh5496 yeah i agree it really is relying more and more on pixar isn't it? I mean look at this, Disney used to be Badass! Now it's relying on it's live action bullshit tween comedies and it's only Badass thing it has now is it's villains which came from the time Disney used to have balls (the 90's villains count to....most of them, and the Princess and the frog Villain counts too).
@edgar81065: I like that villain in the Princess and the Frog XD. I like that movie as well ^^. I like him mostly bc he dabbled with demons and vodoo ;D(I love demons, fire, lightning and shadow magic ^^) XD. And a whole lot more X). The demons he dabbled with were cool, especialy the biggest one of all the demons. I am pleased with the death scene since it's so dark and makes the movie much darker and more appealing to me. Way to go Disney. Now, just give us some more blood,
@edgar81065: like in the old days, and you'll be as badass as you were b4. Disney are STILL badass ofc, but not as much as they were in the old days though : /. They're just badass in a different way ^^.
@bh5496: I can't agree with the ''retard side'' thing, although I guess you're just saying that since you're mad about how Disney has ''transformed'' themselves into what they are today :). It's ok. But, I do agree that Disney was indeed much darker in the 90's than they are today. Disney should go back to their roots and put horror and fear into the crowds again, by making the films darker, scarier and more frightening ^^. It would please me ;).
@MrNauran: I'd say it's Jafar, but yeah, Chernabog is probably among the most powerful Disney Villains, as well as the darkest of them according to me. Jafar is allpowerful, I don't know if Chernabog is, but Maleficent is probably the most powerful, since it's been debated about it so much. :P Still, Jafar is my absolute favorite Disney villain ^^. Chernabog, the Horned King, Maleficent and Clayton are among my favorites also(among many others) :D.
@MrNauran: Funny enough, the Horned King became one of my favorites only yesterday(rofl XD) bc I didn't find out about the Black Cauldron until yesterday. Amazing that Disney made that film o_O'. Too bad that Disney consider it their biggest failure which is a shame :(. Although I haven't seen the whole movie, I did see every(I think) scene of the Horned King, which was enough for me to add him to my favorite Disney Villains list ^^. God bless Disney for all their cartoons. Such a gr8 chilhood.
@manwhalebird Excellent list my good sir (picking Chernabog and The Horned King as your first two). However, I don't know why Shere Khan is not on there instead of Frollo.
@PyramidHeadX Because I always saw Frodo to be extremely evil because he seemed like the most complex among others. Shere Khan (KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANN) was pretty evil and very smooth, but just didn't compare as much to the others is all. Everyone has their own set of choices.
@PyramidHeadX: My favorite Disney Villain is Jafar, then probably comes Chernabog, then shortly comes the Horned King, Maleficent, Hades, Frollo, Clayton, Professor Ratigan, Dr. Facilier, Hopper(I love Grasshoppers and that combined with a villanous character=awesomeness XD), Scar, Kaa, Shere Khan, Captain Hook, Cruella De Vil, Prince John and Sir Hiss and ofc Pete(or Black Pete as he's also refered to ;D). There's probably a couple of other minor Disney villains I like but I won't mention them.
@PyramidHeadX: Oh yeah, I forgot Shenzi, Ed and Banzai, the evil Emperor Zurg from Toy Story and Shan Yu from Mulan. I especialy like Ed bc he's funny as hell(as well as an idiot and a complete nutcase rofl) XD, and Shan Yu, bc he's quite charistmatic, has a cool, charistmatic dark voice and commands the whole Hun Army o_O'. He's also very strong and a highly skilled warrior(I like warriors XD) ;).
this scene of the cemetary people alawys gave me the creeps and probably lots of nightmares as a child. Also, if you can remember in bettlejuice, the phantom zone of ghosts....creepy!!!!
enter battle screen with Chernabog. 0:01 to 2:44 gathering power for next attack... 2:45... SOUL CONSUMING INFERNO ATTACK!!! down to 1 HP, blinded, confused, berserk, poison, slow-death, slow-petrify, mute, defense by half
@Stryder687 yeah ill get right on it. just let me spend a month leveling up my characters, finding the best gear and relics... only to last 5 mins and see the game over screen after he owns me
His appearance in Kingdom Hearts would've been so much more awesome, had he first summoned all the ghosts, demons, and monsters he did in Fantasia to do his bidding, before fighting himself.
The Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia terrified me as a kid, especially where the Chernabog drops the smaller monsters into the big flaming pit.
@Creaturelover18 Did you know that the Disney artists actually tried to get Lugosi to be the live-action model for Chernabog? They took some film footage, but scrapped it, and used someone else.
Out of all the disney villains there is even including Frollo. Chernabog is truely the most evil of all of any Disney villain. Sure it looks like he is just dancing or something, but he's the devil and that's what makes him evil. He's Number 1 on my top ten most evil disney villains.
idk about you but this DARK AND POWERFUL lord who shrouds the land with his evil should at least have some opposition disney needs a blonde long haired peasant boy to fight him. and they should make it darker than the hunchback of notre dome
@Creaturelover18 Even so. It's a mountain sized demon. Unless it's your typical JRPG village, somebody is eventually going to look up one day and figure it out. Though to be fair, even if they saw it, not like they could do crap about it.
@Piroborian With it's wings covering it, it probably blends in too well with the mountain. But it sticks out like a sore thumb with it's wings spread out.
@rbcatlover17806 Ok. I can give ya that. But it looks like this is a nightly occurance with how everything just knows what to do. Eventually, somebody from that town has to look up and notice, the law of averages ain't just a name. And good god, what if somebody tried to climb the mountain?
@Piroborian They're all 'dead' asleep when this happens. That's the point. It's saying what sort of things come out and what happens when we are all asleep.
Maybe he does it every night and the towns people are like "Pfft, he's at it again. That summon thing was impressive the first 2000 times you did it. I'm going back to bed." -__-
@Piroborian I gotta ask, how the hell does this pass as Disney!?!? Doesnt bother anyone that this was done for children, lol??? Fuck Walt must've been a trippa back then.
Chernabog is one of the scariest Disney villains out there. I like the fact that you put the entire "Night on Bald Mountain" segment on here. This would look so AWESOME in Hi-Def, when the DVD comes out in December. Maybe I'll get a Blu-Ray player for this. :)
@WillScarlet16 Antagonist does not equal villain. You can be a villain and not fight anyone, but you have to fight someone to be an antagonist. It's quite obvious that he's evil, so yes, he is a villain, but since he has no opposition, he is not an antagonist, but a villain protagonist instead.
It's real sad that alot of the classics like this were not popular back at the time of the release. The 1931 Dracula with Bela Lugosi for example was considered at the time to be TOO horrifying for audiences in the eyes of critics yet now it's a must see for the genre. Maybe it was the same for this (in fact Lugosi was the original character model for Chernobog's animation) or the fact it told it's story through music. But now we all love them.
The skeletal man on his horse at 2:13 is actually the same animation used for The Black Cauldron. It's almost as if Chernabog is reserrecting the Horned King from the dead!
Darn, I wish people knew more about Slavic Mythology. I'm russian and we have a GREAT mythology about gods, I would dare say as big as the greek, though not as popularized.
I love Chernobog, he is so eviil and unpredictable. I wish Disney made a movie based on Slavic mythology, would be SO awsome!! :)))
I like reading about folklore from all regions of the world, including Slavic/Balkan tales. ^_^ I never knew the name of "Chernobog" until yesterday, but I learned that it was Slavic for "black god" which is very cool (I also learned that the events in Fantasia is related to a pagan holiday celebrated in Scandanavia/Slavic countries). I will definately be reading more into Slavic mythology. : )
I've never seen Chernabog before (only in Kingdom Hearts), but if I had seen him when I was little, I probably would have nightmares for a month tops! But, who wouldnt? he is scary! (not by much anymore)
I used to watch Fantasia with My Grandma all the time and Chernabog scared the crap out of me. So most of the time we just ended it with the Dancing Hippos part and skipped the Chernabog part.
Indeed. I just can't see anyone topping him in terms of evil and power, not even Maleficent...
Also, just throwing this out there, but I feel like, when it comes to the sequel, Fantasia 2000, the Firebird would be the equivalent of Chernabog in that movie. They're both part of the last sequence of their movie, and they're both the antagonists of their respective sequences.
@92af I'd say the Firebird is tied with Chernabog in power. Yes, Chernabog is an evil god of darkness, but the Firebird is an unstoppable, uncontrollable force of nature whose only instinct is to destroy everything indiscriminately.
that guy is still freaking me out! my mum said wen i was 4 "if you go out wen it's dark Chernabog will take you!" and i'm still scared for darknes and Chernabog xD i can't belive it xD
Chernabog is the proof that there is a villain able to compare himself with Disneys best villain ever which is Maleficent!
1.Maleficent
2.Chernabog
3.Judge Claude Frollo
4.Jafar
5.The evil Queen

And there is good fighting him, what about the rising sun and the monks.
nagaking07 1 year ago
@nagaking07 The irony is, since he's the one the story revolves around, he's technically the hero
WillScarlet16 1 year ago
@WillScarlet16 I wouldn't say the hero, just the protagonist, and the protagonist doesn't have to be a hero.
nagaking07 1 year ago
@WillScarlet16 Antagonist does not equal villain. You can be a villain and not fight anyone, but you have to fight someone to be an antagonist. It's quite obvious that he's evil, so yes, he is a villain, but since he has no opposition, he is not an antagonist, but a villain protagonist instead.

summoning demons, awakening souls of the dead, and cringing at the tolling of holy bells doesn't do it for you?

I kind of like Chernabog when he's just a silhouette.

Which movie is this from?
Matakshaman 1 year ago
It's real sad that alot of the classics like this were not popular back at the time of the release. The 1931 Dracula with Bela Lugosi for example was considered at the time to be TOO horrifying for audiences in the eyes of critics yet now it's a must see for the genre. Maybe it was the same for this (in fact Lugosi was the original character model for Chernobog's animation) or the fact it told it's story through music. But now we all love them.

One of the few really dark things Disney has done. Love it!

in some of the scene you can see what would be the silhouette for the horned king from the first vision showed by the pig.

Why is there no talking and sound FX in the movie "Fantasia"?

The skeletal man on his horse at 2:13 is actually the same animation used for The Black Cauldron. It's almost as if Chernabog is reserrecting the Horned King from the dead!

Darn, I wish people knew more about Slavic Mythology. I'm russian and we have a GREAT mythology about gods, I would dare say as big as the greek, though not as popularized.
I love Chernobog, he is so eviil and unpredictable. I wish Disney made a movie based on Slavic mythology, would be SO awsome!! :)))
5/5
DemonKitten2009 2 years ago 4
I like reading about folklore from all regions of the world, including Slavic/Balkan tales. ^_^ I never knew the name of "Chernobog" until yesterday, but I learned that it was Slavic for "black god" which is very cool (I also learned that the events in Fantasia is related to a pagan holiday celebrated in Scandanavia/Slavic countries). I will definately be reading more into Slavic mythology. : )

yea I know I always felt greek myths were highly over rated theres a lot of awesome myths out there nobody even knows about!

Meaning I don't even recall watching Night on Bald Mountain... :(

Sorry that I am going to Warcraft everybody, but Chernabog reminds me of Illidan Stormrage from warcraft 3, or the Shadow from Inkheart.

The demons at 5:10 through 5:20 have breasts.
executor56 2 years ago 3
in my opinion Chernabog is the strongest and most powerful of ALL disney villains
92af 2 years ago 4

Chernabog135 2 years ago
@92af The Horned King is better than Chernabog.
Metabadd 1 year ago
@92af I'd say the Firebird is tied with Chernabog in power. Yes, Chernabog is an evil god of darkness, but the Firebird is an unstoppable, uncontrollable force of nature whose only instinct is to destroy everything indiscriminately.
