This is how I think Mozart's music should be interpreted! I'm deeply impressed. The Hungarian language may aswell be authentic since Mozart was of Austrian-Hungarian birth.
I had a luck to her in live as Sarastro from "The magic flute József Gregor and Mihály Székely, too. Both performance were a WONDER OF SINGING, and all the two times I was in trouble with my tears. Thank, You, HUNGARIAN BASSISTS!
József Gregor really was not a typicall bass. He had unbeleivable high register too - just see, how many times he sang Falstaff.
But his low register was powerful and wide - he sang Pomade which requires a Db...
If u wanna see him singing with a darker voice, check his other recordings. In this case he did not WANT to sing as dark as when he sang Osmin or Ol man river.
Wonderful... That arie was the one that made me turn towards classical music at the age of six. The whole opera is a magic, but with Gregor, it's even better! Or now, I have to say that it was, unfortunately...
But maybe the character has to have a dark voice doesn't he?
He is powerful in the first part but when it's low, he is not powerful. For me saratro has to be a bass not a light baritone. But I like the hungarian version
Well, you don't know him, but if you listen to his performance in Mozart's 'Escape from the Serai' or rather 'Elopement from the Serai', you will change your mind :-). He is a true bass and I heared him sing live 'Largo' from Handel's Xerxes. It was amazing and I will never forget.

Superbe voix de basse chantante, pas très profonde mais très bien conduite. Son Sarastro est très crédible plein d'humanité,
émouvant+++

I think a pitch of 44 Hz can be regarded as bass...

my favorte part of the entire opera.
i read somewhere (cant remember) a quote about this part of the opera.
basically it said the only song GOD would ever sing would be this one piece.
:)
its fantastic...

I had to agree with someone who called you an idiot.If this is a "light baritone" for you,then you don't know nothing about operatic voices.

Wonderful. I did really like this great bass. He sang with his powerful voice without making dark the voice as many do...
